Guiding, Feasting, Fasting. Biblical Strategies of Leadership
Festivals and fasting both create a social space in which questions of leadership and followership are negotiated. Based on the concept of leadership relations by Markus Pohlmann, this paper examines how festivals are used to establish, reinforce, or change leadership and explores how fasting can also be understood as both a locus and an instrument of leadership relations. In biblical texts, both activities depict the leadership relations in an elliptical manner: the leader and the led group likewise fulfill constitutive functions for effective leadership
Xanthippe’s Sisters. Philippians 4:2–3 and Leadership in the Philippian Church
The interpretation of Philippians 4:2–3 was long determined by the premise of a dispute between Euodia and Syntyche, which was to be settled by the yokefellow. By abandoning the androcentric implications of this presumption, which can be illustrated by a comparison with Xanthippeʼs reception, the leadership function of the two women becomes clearer. In view of the Judaizing forces that could soon reach Philippi, Euodia and Syntyche were prophylactically called upon to retain unity among themselves in order to promote the unity of the community
Indigenous Peoples’ Legislative Representation Through the Philippine Party-List System
This qualitative study examines whether the Philippine party-list system effectively enables indigenous peoples’ legislative representation by reviewing documents from the Philippine Commission on Elections, the Philippine Congress, the Philippine Supreme Court, and the profiles of elected indigenous peoples’ party-list groups. Using Hannah Pitkin’s dimensions of representation, this study finds that, as a form of formal mechanism, the party-list system provides limited representation opportunities for indigenous peoples’ party-list groups. Additionally, although the elected sectoral representatives are members of indigenous communities, their socio-economic status differs from that of most of the indigenous peoples. Finally, the presence of indigenous peoples’ sectoral representatives in the legislature did not result in adequate substantive representation of indigenous communities, as most indigenous-related proposals have not passed into legislation. This study concludes that the mainstream electoral mechanism fails to effectively enhance the legislative representation of indigenous peoples
Comment: Struggles for Rights and Participation in Eastern European Periods of Transition
Participation in decision-making is the common theme of the three articles to be discussed; decision-making in areas that concern the political sphere while also challenging the traditional private-public divide, with a particular focus on religion and gender. What is equality based on? Who is included in decision-making processes, and who is excluded? Which power relations determine these processes, and how are they related to freedom? These are the questions the three articles try to address for collective groups in Eastern European regions unsettled by political transitions at various points during the long twentieth century.Participation in decision-making is the common theme of the three articles to be discussed; decision-making in areas that concern the political sphere while also challenging the traditional private-public divide, with a particular focus on religion and gender. Between Movement and Academia.: The Leipzig Women’s Library MONAliesA and the Transformation of Women’s and Gender Studies in East Germany in the 1990s
My contribution focuses on the interplay between political and epistemic practices of the autonomous women’s movement. I am particularly interested in links between movement and academia. From the perspective of the history of knowledge, I present practices by which the lesbian/women’s archives and libraries produced and circulated knowledge into other spheres of society – in this case academia – using the example of the cooperation between the East German women’s library MONAliesA and the association alma – Frauen in der Wissenschaft (alma – Women in Science) in Leipzig in the early to mid-1990s. Taking a closer look at these practices makes it possible to trace the circulation of knowledge and shed further light on the interconnections between the autonomous women’s movement and academic field of women’s and gender studies. I argue that MONAliesA acted as a hinge between the movement and academia, which resulted in a reciprocal relationship. The analysis aims to highlight the often overlooked political practices of the women’s movement and enrich research on the women’s movement and women’s studies in the GDR and in East Germany after 1989/90 through empirical observations. My contribution focuses on the interplay between political and epistemic practices of the autonomous women’s movement. “Spectacle of Broken Cities and Broken Lives”: Media Innovations in U.S. Journalistic Reporting of the Spanish Civil War
This paper examines how the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was portrayed in the United States through innovative media forms. By conducting a qualitative content analysis of news outlets of Time Inc, the study investigates how photography, radio, and newsreels covered the conflict. These outlets pioneered interpretative reporting and exploited the affordances of emerging media technologies. The analysis shows that coverage centered on the experiences of common people and especially on the devastation caused by aerial bombardment. While some reporting aimed to evoke compassion and solidarity, other narratives dehumanized victims or framed civilian suffering as an inevitable consequence of modern war. The coverage used new media to suggest immediacy and authenticity by empathizing eyewitnessing. In combination with explicit depictions of violence, this produced emotional engagement. The war was thus constructed as a consumable spectacle
Digital Memory Practices and Platform Narratives: How TikTok Remembers the Srebrenica Genocide
This thesis investigates how historical narratives of the Srebrenica genocide are portrayed and remembered on TikTok. As the worst massacre in Europe since the Holocaust, and with its 30th anniversary in 2025, Srebrenica remains a crucial site of memory. Using Kuckartz’s qualitative content analysis, 20 TikTok videos and captions were studied. The sample was built through a serial analysis: 80 videos were first gathered by keyword searches, then reduced to 20 by selecting one per defined thematic container. Four key themes emerged: dominant narratives, counter narratives, platformisation of digital memory, and memory gaps. Common motives include the roles of women, the graveyard and Srebrenica flower, and slogans such as “Never forget Srebrenica”. Survivor testimonials and emotional and aesthetical portrayals amplify victim narratives, while genocide denial in the sample is marginal. The findings highlight how digital spaces shape and negotiate collective memory of Srebrenica
