Cultural reciprocity in special education: Building bridges to cross-cultural understanding with parent
Cultural reciprocity is an approach that goes beyond the concept of cultural competence. The first step for service providers in a multicultural environment is to acknowledge that they cannot be competent in the cultures of all the families they serve. By recognizing the cultural assumptions and biases that underlie their own practice, service providers can then be open to learning about the beliefs of family members, and can engage in an exchange of cultural views. With mutual respect established, providers can collaborate with families in establishing and pursuing realistic goals for the children they serve
Okul öncesi dönem çocuklarının okula uyum sürecine ilişkin anaokulu öğretmenlerinin ve annelerinin görüşleri
It was aimed that evaluating the views of teachers who work in preschools and the mothers of the children that attend to these institutions on school adaptation process in this study. The sample of the research consists of 39 teachers who work in four official preschools in the city of Bursa and the mothers of 142 children that attend these preschools. Two questionnaires were applied to the teachers and the mothers within the scope of the research about the school adaptation process. As a result of the research it is found that both parents left their children to school together and they waited for their children especially in the first week. Teachers stated that the families’ firstborn children, children at the age of three, male and the ones who come from low socio-economic status had more problems in the school adaptation process. Also teachers stated that their most preferred activities were games, group plays and drama studies.
Maybe, maybe not: Probabilistic reasoning in preschool period
Probabilistic reasoning needs careful consideration for the development of the child’s ability to interrogate and predict the likelihood based on the findings from the evaluation of various situations or events. Children, hence, will begin to experience metacognitive skills such as considering different causes and effects, decision-making and interpreting. This study aims to explore the probabilistic reasoning skills of preschool children according to the influential variables of gender and age. Typically developing 123 children who are enrolled in the city-centre preschools in Ankara constitute the study group. In the study, five questions were asked in the probability section of the Evaluation Instrument for the Early Mathematical Reasoning Skills developed by Ergül (2014) were posed to identify the probabilistic reasoning skills of the children. Each child was treated individually to gather detailed findings. Children’s explanations to the probability questions were evaluated in detail through the use of rubrics. Findings reveal that girls and boys do not differ significantly in their probabilistic reasoning skills; but, in line with the recent literature, these skills improve as they grow up
Çocuktan beklentiler
Transition from agricultural society to industry society, from industrial society to science society has taken place. In all these societies, expectations from children also vary. In the agricultural community, human labor is based on arm power. For this reason, expectation from children is to increase work power. Having more children is the basis for the expectations in this community to see that the boy is valuable because he has increased his work power. In the industrial society, the power of the arm changed its place with the machine power. The knowledgeable person is not a family grown-up but a foreman. Childhood was distinguished during this period. It has been investigated that the child has a separate development. In the information society, communication and information has never been as fast as it is in this period. The widespread use of the Internet, and the use of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are in this period. In this society, families are panicked to prepare a future in their own heads for their children. Because the parents thought of their children, they decided about the child's life instead of the child making these decisions. This has had a negative impact on children's sense of autonomy and their ability to take responsibility. To change this, parents should train their children in auto control and develop children's impulse control skills. The children should be able to understand their emotions and make decisions by reasoning and reasoning.
Significance of early diagnosis and early intervention in early childhood hearing loss
Hearing loss is an important problem interfering with the propagation of acoustic signal starting from the external ear to the primary auditory center of the brain. The congenital hearing loss is an important and common disorder that can lead to many consecutive negative conditions when it is not diagnosed and treated within the first few months of life. Early Hearing Diagnosis and Intervention programs becoming more increasingly popular in recent years aim to avoid the negative effects of hearing loss. The main goal of these programs is to maximize the linguistic proficiency and literacy development of children with hearing loss. Children who are not given the appropriate opportunities for learning language fall behind their peers with normal hearing in communication, reading, cognitive and socio-emotional development. Delays occurring in these fields manifest as a lower educational status and vocational employment problem in adulthood. Therefore, diagnosing and treating hearing loss as early as possible is extremely important
Akademisyen olmak: Genç akademisyenlere öneriler
People who contribute to the any field through scientific researches in higher education institutions are called academicians. The first step towards becoming an academic is to start a master’s programme in a field of interest. Then, enrolling in a Ph.D. programme is necessary. Harmony between the supervisor and the candidate academic should be ensured. If problems emerge, new solutions should be created. After the successful completion of the Ph.D. programme, the candidate is eligible to become an academic. The academic must be able to follow international academic literature, therefore, proficiency in a foreign language is extremely important. A qualified academic develops social networks with students and colleagues, and participates to academic congresses, both national and international. Furthermore, since making contributions to the field is necessary, quality of the articles is more important than their quantity.Yüksek Öğrenim kurumlarında bilimsel araştırmalar ile alana katkıda bulunan kişilere akademisyen denir.
