Egypt. Symbolism and Social Value of Mummy Nets in the Late Period. Research Work Undertaken from October to December 2024
This report outlines the research work undertaken by the recipient of the DAI Research Scholarship (also known as the »Luxor Scholarship«) at the German House in Qurna (Egypt) between October and December 2024. The author investigated the social value and symbolism of specific funerary objects known as »mummy nets«, which Egyptologists believe made their first appearance at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC in Upper Egypt. The outcome of this inquiry is three-fold. First, mummy nets were employed in different media, though in identical contexts, since the Second Intermediate Period. Second, mummy nets in the Late Period were not assigned indiscriminately to the vast majority of those who were mummified and buried in decorated coffins, but were assigned to selected individuals. Third, further investigation of the identity of those who were buried with mummy nets could shed light on the symbolism and purpose of these otherwise mysterious objects. Jahrtausends v. Chr. in Oberägypten auftauchten.
Two Jesuit Missions in the Llanos de Mojos, Bolivia: Their Short-lived Listory Reconstructed from Written Sources and Lidar Images
Our knowledge of the missions established by the Jesuits in the Llanos de Mojos in the late 17th and early 18th centuries has so far been based exclusively on written sources of the time. This article presents lidar plans of two of these missions. The amazing detail of the plans provides us hardly imagined insights into the structure of these missions. For both missions, a brief outline of their history is given first, as without this background it is impossible to determine which “version” of the respective mission the Lidar maps show. Here we can anticipate that one of the lidar maps shows the second foundation of the Mission Santísima Trinidad, which existed between 1711 and 1769, and the other very probably depicts the Mission San Martín, founded in the Iténez area around 1708, which was only moved to another location shortly before the Jesuits were expelled from the Americas in 1767.Mit der Missionierung durch die Jesuiten im späten 17. und frühen 18.
Originaltitel: The faience finds of the Idaean Cave
The faience finds of the Idaean Cave compose a homogenous and interesting group amongst the votives that have been discovered in the sanctuary. Most of them are imported, mainly from Phoenicia and the wider Levantine region, and a lesser quantity from Egypt. A third, smaller group of finds consists of artifacts of Greek inspiration and execution. From a symbolic point of view, the figurines depicting Egyptian deities contribute to the better understanding of the complex nature of the cult which took place in the sanctuary, as well as to its eastern-Egyptian influence. As regards their dating, the objects unearthed in the Idaean Cave are similar to the rest of the orientalia. Some date back to the Dark Ages, however, most of them date from the Geometric – Orientalizing Period until the late 7th century B.C. In terms of technology, the discovery of faience/glass waste is noteworthy, as it also makes possible the existence of a workhouse near the sanctuary.Πρωτότυπος τίτλος: The faience finds of the Idaean Cave
Hadrian and Cecrops
Original title: Hadrian und Kekrops
The epaulets of several cuirassed busts of Hadrian and some of his successors bear the relief of a snake-legged being that has been the subject of widely diverging interpretations. Representations from the High Classical period show that this figure must be Cecrops, the first king of Athens, who was considered the first to unify Attica and the founder of Attic cults and culture. Hadrian, who reestablished Athens as the center of the Greek world with new laws, cults, and games, was apparently compared to Cecrops. This flattering comparison was then extended to those among his successors who visited Athens and were supposedly more closely connected to the city. As previously conjectured, these busts are definitely the products of Attic workshops. A contemporary representation of Cecrops on a monumental scale has been identified in the so-called Stoa of the Giants in the second phase of the odeon on the Athenian agora. Cecrops and his counterpart Triton are the vassals of the Athenian poliadic gods Athena and Poseidon
Die Spolien im mittelbyzantinischen Stadtbild Athens
A group of small churches built during the Middle Byzantine age (12th – 13th century) in the city of Athens show several spolia, i.e. reused bases, columns, capitals and frames. These, generally in marble, come from monuments of the ancient city and are placed inside the churches to embellish the most sacred parts of them. In the following paper the spolia will be analysed with particular attention to the new context focusing on the history of the building in which they are located, the chronology of their reuse, trying to understand the reasons for this practice.Πρωτότυπος τίτλος: The spolia in the Middle Byzantine cityscape of Athens
Originaltitel: The spolia in the Middle Byzantine cityscape of Athens
Eine Gruppe kleiner in mittelbyzantinischer Zeit (12. – 13.

The osteothekai of the Kerameikos
Original title: Die Osteotheken im Kerameikos
A survey of osteothekai, that is, stone funerary vessels, from the Kerameikos cemetery has long been a desideratum, which the following catalogue now attempts to satisfy. Since no comparable surveys for the Greek world have been undertaken, this article represents only the first step toward understanding the circumstances in which this unusual type of funerary vessel was used. While a small number of ossuaries from the Kerameikos date to the 5th century B.C., a majority of the datable specimens among the fifty pieces were created during the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic Periods. Under the Roman Empire, we can observe a further accumulation, notable for the repeatedly documented re-use of stone vessels, including a series of mortars, and distinguished generally by a greater degree of heterogeneity. The pieces from the 4th century B.C., in contrast, form a more homogenous group. Their resemblance to contemporary Parian osteothekai potentially indicates an exchange of ideas
Ein Späthelladisch-III-A1-Befund aus Kontopigado, Alimos, und Prozesse der Mykenisierung in Athen
Important new evidence for the pottery phase LH III A1, rarely represented in stratified settlement deposits in Attica and southern Greece, has come from the excavations in Kontopigado, Alimos; it is discussed here in detail. The pottery, part of a dump discarded in a shallow pit, is characterized by a variety of wares and contrasts strongly with pottery traditions on the site in the subsequent Mycenaean occupation phases. The most striking feature is the almost complete absence of Mycenaean pattern painted pottery, a ware that by LH III A1 was already common in many regions. The changes observed in the pottery consumed in the immediately following phase are discussed with regard to the general processes of Mycenaeanization. Moreover, several regional features, characteristic of the LH III A2 and LH III B pottery at Athens, were continued from LH III A1 either unchanged or were integrated into the new styles.Πρωτότυπος τίτλος: A Late Helladic III A1 deposit from Kontopigado, Alimos and processes of Mycenaeanization at Athens
Originaltitel: A Late Helladic III A1 deposit from Kontopigado, Alimos and processes of Mycenaeanization at Athens
New Excavations on the Western Slope of the Upper City. Results of the 2022 and 2023 Seasons
In 2022, new excavations have begun on the western slope in the Upper City of Boğazköy-Ḫattuša, a largely unexplored part of the Hittite capital. Extensive geophysical prospections are the starting-point for the excavations, which will assess the Hittite architectural remains and their chronology, particularly in relation to the two nearby city gates. The work carried out so far has revealed the typical layout of a Hittite temple with an adjoining workshop, as well as the remains of another monumental building. In addition, parallel excavations on the nearby city wall have provided important clues to unresolved dating issues
Córdoba, Spain. Madīnat al-Zahrāʼ. Building Research on the Upper Hall and its Adjacent Buildings. The Work of the Years 2020 to 2023
A few kilometres from Córdoba, Abd al-Rahman III, the first caliph of Córdoba, founded his new residential city of Madīnat al-Zahrāʼ around 940/941 CE, where the palace, with its representative buildings, courtyards and gardens, provided the architectural setting for receptions of foreign embassies, religious festivals and celebrations of the caliphate‘s victories. Since 2020, a DFG project has been underway to study the Upper Hall, one of the two reception halls and its adjoining buildings. The results presented here show how construction technology and site logistics were geared towards the efficiency and speed of the large construction site, and the observed phases of remodelling and augmenting the Upper Hall point to a change in the Caliphate‘s self-staging
