Multilingualism within Scholarly Communication in SSH. A literature review
It is undeniable that scholarly publication is boosted nowadays by the use of the English language, but this does not (and cannot) mean that the other languages have to be obliterated as scientific and cultural agents, equally valid and indispensable. Therefore, multilingualism is an expression of bibliodiversity that has to be protected and cherished, particularly in the area of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), a field in which culturally and societally relevant studies are made in local languages, when approaching areas such as cultural heritage, education, migration, public administration. The main goal of this paper is to present a literature review in order to identify the main aspects influencing language selection and the use of multilingualism within scholarly communication, allowing for putting forward recommendations for future initiatives aiming at enhancing multilingualism, particularly in connection with the opportunities deriving from Open Science. It is undeniable that scholarly publication is boosted nowadays by the use of the English language, but this does not (and cannot) mean that the other languages have to be obliterated as scientific and cultural agents, equally valid and indispensable. Albano Sorbelli in Florence. Bibliology and Historical method at the Istituto di Studi Superiori
Starting from the dissertation submitted in 1899 by Albano Sorbelli to the Istituto di Studi Superiori in Florence (later transformed in the University of Florence, 1924), the text examines his historic and bibliological training, the relationship between History and Bibliology and the role of the Philology and Philosophy Section of the Institute, founded in 1859 under the direction of Gino Capponi. The historical courses held by Pasquale Villari and Achille Coen, also Director of the Library, toghether with the archival and bibliographic classes and exercices held at the Paleography and Diplomatics School directed by Cesare Paoli, gave him the opportunity to better understand and strenghten the link between History and Bibliography, defining and starting his professional career. A final short overview of the manuscript confirms the skill of Albano Sorbelli in managing historical sources and classifying them, and foretells his attitude to historical bibliography and Library Science.
This synthetic overview starts with a recent book: Conversations with Leading Academic and Research Library Directors: International Perspectives on Library Management, eds. Patrick Lo et al. (Cambridge, MA; Kidlington, UK: Chandos Publishing, 2019). The book collects thirty interviews with leaders of libraries belonging to institutions of high prestige in the international field. Important informative and narrative elements emerge from the conversations. Specifically, they concern the profiles of respondents, the challenges faced, the changes taking place (change management, digital innovation, new services, new ways of relating to researchers and students). In its second part, the article compares the results of this research project to other similar studies of the same period. The final part presents a few words about the future perspectives of academic libraries in the world.

Is cataloguing the “poor relation”? Some reflections
The article, taking its cue from the title of a book by Rossella Dini Il parente povero della catalogazione (The poor relative of cataloguing), is intended to be a reflection on the positioning of the cataloguing activity in relation to the other activities of the library, and a reflection on what cataloguing is, or we would like it to be. A quick reconnaissance of the definitions of cataloguing and the changes in cataloguing tout court is followed by a wider-ranging analysis of the question of the role and positioning of catalographic activity in contemporary librarianship
The early history of the Book and Archival Heritage Institute Library of the Tuscany Region, Italy (SBL): (1972-1984)
The essay presents the history of the library of the Service for Book and Archival Heritage of the Region of Tuscany (SBL) from 1972, the year of its foundation, to 1984, the year of Luigi Crocetti’s retirement. The contribution moves on the double track of historical research and the personal memories of some protagonists. The library is characterized by being a unique case in Italy: a reference point for Tuscan and Italian librarians

Foundations of the information science. History and contemporary theories
It presents the result of theoretical research on the history of information science from its theories and concepts. From the systematization of the collected data, a framework has been built in which information science is divided into three major moments: the founding period, in which information science was born as a result of five distinct phenomena (the 1960s); the period of expansion of the problems, with the constitution of six sub-areas (1970s to 1990s); and contemporary perspectives, presented here from the identification of twelve distinct approaches developed in the last twenty years. Next, the six dimensions of the information concept are presented in which the most significant conceptual advances have been made over these decades. Its findings show that the diversity of theories is an enriching factor for the field, but also produces the need for systematization and mapping works. It presents the result of theoretical research on the history of information science from its theories and concepts. The Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program and its sister program the Preassigned Control Number (PCN) Program have provided prepublication metadata to publishers since 1971. For the first three decades, CIP publishers submitted paper applications, and CIP staff manually keyed the information into the Library of Congress’s local cataloging system. Between 1999 and 2003, the Library developed an in-house online CIP and PCN system with separate backend modules, the EPCN Traffic Manager and the ECIP Traffic Manager. In 2017 the Library let a contract to completely overhaul the aging online system and replace it with a custom application on a ServiceNow platform. The intensive design and development phase, followed by the controlled chaos surrounding implementation, resulted in a stable, functional, and state-of-the-art application named PrePub Book Link (PPBL). PPBL brought both the CIP and PCN programs into the future with an overall improved user experience, increased security, advanced account management, dynamic Web forms, enhanced ONIX integration and workflows, and features such as the MARC Editor and the customizable CIP data block generator. As the CIP Program prepares for the next 50 years, continued development of PPBL will enable the CIP and PCN programs to thrive
The responsibility for the documentary sources management and preservation. Digital fragility and ethic commitment
The contribution examines topics related to the management, keeping and use of digital documentary resources with specific attention to their ethical dimension. This aspect is analyzed at a general level and specifically with reference to the need for professionals to carefully re-define the organizational models, the platforms planning and activities related to the fruition of digital assets. The author analyses the dynamic complexity of the contemporary digital heritage and the consequences required to professionals in term of high level of knowledge and competences and full respect of guiding principles and scientific methods in each domain. The digital environment implies also flexibility, integration capacity, a permanent exercise of responsibility, a continuous updating of specialized knowledge and an interdisciplinary approach. The success in the qualified mediation between conflicting interests and principles, at the basis of the digital curation and preservation complexities, is strictly connected to the mediators’ recognition of the civil value of their function.
