    BIBFRAME Development

The Library of Congress has been exploring “linked data” for over 10 years. The genesis of this development goes back to the W3C projects in the late 1990s on SGML, then XML, HTML, and finally a linked data oriented format RDF. In 2007 the Library of Congress organized a community inquiry into the “future of bibliographic control,” that became a catalyst for exploration and change. A wide ranging report was written and some major recommendations were made. Some have been acted upon, others are still on the table such as a rethinking of subject vocabularies. But two technical recommendations were ideally suited for exploration using the emerging linked data framework of the W3C: the use of technology to get broader use of library curated vocabularies and the replacement of the MARC format with a data interchange framework that makes library data more readily available on the web. The Library was investigating the linked data framework for standards and models for exposing its vocabularies such as the LCSH. Accordingly, LCSH was made publicly available as linked data in 2009 followed by name authorities, countries, languages, and many other controlled lists used in bibliographic standards such as MARC, MODS, and PREMIS. This project became the Library of Congress Linked Data Service. Its aim is to establish stable identifiers in URI form for entities and concepts that are useful for description of cultural heritage material. Then in 2011 the Library of Congress announced the start of the Bibliographic Framework Initiative (subsequently labelled “BIBFRAME”) to respond to the second major technical recommendation of the future of bibliographic control report: to replace MARC for interchange and to make library resources more visible on the web. The Library of Congress, with the library community, is tackling the challenges described above and this paper looks at main aspects of that development. The Library of Congress has been exploring “linked data” for over 10 years. Full text link
This article defines the main features of the Italian Resistance, and their representation in the conceptual scheme of DDC, and aims to give them a more precise classification as there is an ever-growing literary warrant. It also examines personal accounts relating to the Italian Resistance: diaries, letters, papers and memories. Since the post-war period, these unique and important documents have become the object of historical research and extensive publication.

The article examines the evolution of pop-up children books in the period from the late eighteenth century and the end of the twentieth century and, in particular, the artistic personality of some publishers/paper engineer (Dean and Son, Lothar Meggendorfer, Ernest Nister, St. Louise Giraud, Vojtech Kubăsta ). The contribution also illustrates operation of some devices. It remains deliberately excluded from the survey the digital pop-up book, which has different characteristics and problems compared to the printed book

The author revisits the development of RDA from its inception in 2005 through to its initial release in 2010. The development effort is set in the context of an evolving digital environment that was transforming both the production and dissemination of information resources and the technologies used to create, store, and access data describing those resources. The author examines the interplay between strategic commitments to align RDA with new conceptual models, emerging database structures, and metadata developments in allied communities, on the one hand, and compatibility with AACR2 legacy databases on the other. Aspects of the development effort examined include the structuring of RDA as a resource description language, organizing the new standard as a working tool, and refining guidelines and instructions for recording RDA data.

Towards the integration of archives, libraries and museums

Within the MAB Toscana a working group has been created to reflect on the possibilities of making the descriptive standards adopted in museums, archives and libraries interoperable and to test ways of cooperation and sharing of information, thus favoring usability. To this end, some significant experiences, both at national and international level, were examined. Furthermore, the possibilities and the problems arising from the introduction of models such as FRBR and RDA (as tools intended for the description of different types of documents) were investigated. This analysis is preliminary to a desirable test phase to be held in Italy, in order to verify any critical issue and develop joint projects between institutions that hold documentary collections of various kinds This cooperation is currently in an embryonic state, but a considerable potential can be already foreseen for the quality improvement of their services and the enhancement of their cultural heritageNell’ambito del MAB Toscana è nato un gruppo di lavoro per riflettere sulle possibilità di integrazione tra standard descrittivi adottati in musei, archivi e biblioteche e per sperimentare modalità di cooperazione e condivisione di informazioni favorendone la fruibilità.

Argues that the RDA was an unnecessary waste of time and money. The few improvements it makes in catalogue records could have been accomplished far more cheaply, promptly, and easily by modifying AACR2. Argues that RDA's abandonment of the ISBD is a retrograde and damaging step.L'autore sostiene che le nuove linee guida RDA sono un inutile spreco di tempo e denaro.
