This article presents the new file classification schema national for Italian schools, produced by the Italian Directorate General of Archives of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, within the project Titulus Scuola. This classification schema represents the starting point for a standard documental system, aimed at the digital administration.
The extent of cultural heritage in digital format requires the creation of tools designed to improve access to and to enhance the added value deriving from the intersection of data originated in heterogeneous environments. Within an aggregational portal, cross-domain navigation is a particularly critical issue given the wide spectrum of criteria to which data and digital objects conform. Furthermore, data models supporting interoperability, such as Dublin Core, have a flat structure and a reduced granularity, thus contributing to the loss of information as well as to the decontextualization of the objects.Adopting the same format and descriptive rules for all classes of materials, a practical solution implemented by many English speaking countries in the last decade of the 20th century, is no longer an option. Much more feasible appears nowadays the creation of more complex data models, as in the case of Europeana Data Model, or the implementation of clustering strategies, such as in VIAF. In perspective, the Linked Open Data option appears quite promising. Based on the experience of BeWeb, the portal created and coordinated by the National Office for the Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage (UNBCE) of the Italian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CEI) to provide access to its many databases, authority data can be successfully used to bring together information provided by different sources. Data clustering appears to be a viable strategy for the purpose of preserving the quality of the original description and providing the user with a more accurate context information.L’esistenza di patrimoni culturali in formato digitale richiede l’allestimento di strumenti volti ad estendere le modalità di accesso e potenziare il valore aggiunto derivante dall’incrocio tra dati provenienti dai diversi ambiti.
The criteria to guide the selection in the varied publishing and commercial landscape of e-books concern many aspects, from platform contents to functionalities, from business models to digital right management. It is not easy to establish the best model among those offered, and information needs change from a library to another. The article examines the elements to take into account before the acquisition and during the monitoring activities, such as title price, use cost, collections’ updates. In particular, the paper analyses the parameters that led to the acquisition of some e-book packages of large academic publishers and access data over 12 months
BNI open and collaborative: how and why
A consequence of the economic crisis that affected Italy in the last years is a significant decrease of economic resources for libraries, especially for those depending from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage. In this framework, the National Library of Florence and the National bibliographic agency, belonging to it, suffered a significant reshaping of their output, the Italian National Bibliography (BNI), due to the reduction of people in its editorial staff. The search for solutions to cope with this difficult situation lead to two main decisions, both based on the meaning of public service and on the cooperation principle. The first had the result of the free and online publication of the Italian National Bibliography, starting from May 2016, so that aligning the BNI to other National European Bibliographies. The latter lead to a collaboration project that on one side confirmed the role of the National Library of Florence as bibliographic, technical and editorial coordinator, and on the other opens the National Bibliography to a certain number of libraries with specific traits (legal deposition coverage and subject specialisation), so that contributing to a collaborative Italian National Bibliography
Investigating Book Prices in Early Modern Europe: Questions and Sources
This paper presents a summary of the conceptual framework within which a study of book prices should take place and the research issues, as well as the methodological problems, which need to be addressed.Although the nature of books as semi-industrial goods puts them in a different class of product as seen from the point of view of a pre-industrial economy, the broad categories of supply and demand have been used to identify a series of factors giving rise to specific research questions which need input from various aspects of economic historical analysis. The history of the book is placed in relation to some classic topics of economic history, in an attempt to place the book trade and the prices of books in the context of a broader historiographical debate.Among available sources for early modern book prices, the inventory of the book shop of Bernardo Giunti (Department of Special Collections, UCLA, Collection 170/622) is evidence of the thriving book market in Venice of the period. The almost 12,000 entries included in the list of books for sale reflect the purposes and aims of the firm. The structure of this document is somewhat complex as it was in continual use for more than twenty years. Over this period time, it appears to have become not merely a catalogue or finding-list of books for the use of the firm’s clerks, but also an important tool for the management of the shop and its stock. Almost every title is priced, making this inventory one of the most extensive and significant sources for the study of book prices in early modern Europe. This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant Agreement n° 694476).This paper presents a summary of the conceptual framework within which a study of book prices should take place and the research issues, as well as the methodological problems, which need to be addressed.Although the nature of books as semi-industrial goods puts them in a different class of product as seen from the point of view of a pre-industrial economy, the broad categories of supply and demand have been used to identify a series of factors giving rise to specific research questions which need input from various aspects of economic historical analysis. Elements and Relationships within a records classification scheme
The construction of records classification schemes is an undeveloped topic to which the archival discipline has dedicated little effort. This is not easily understandable, as records classification schemes are the main tool traditionally used to organize and manage records. This article analyzes the elements that are taken into consideration when building a classification scheme, as well as how these elements can interrelate. Hierarchical versus non-hierarchical relationships are also examined, and future research directions are identified
Classificazione in archivio e in biblioteca: fra tradizione e rinnovamento concettuale
We live in a highly volatile technological environment, in which the generation of new data and information access tools has increased the level of specialization of the users’ information needs. In this changeable scenario, standards and the role of librarians must also evolve along with the services provided to users. The lack of specialization in standards is leading librarians to improvise local solutions when cataloguing specialized resources, thus failing to benefit global interoperability among libraries, and with other institutions and initiatives. As different cataloguing standards, as well as many conceptual models, point out the necessity to deal with the specific users’ needs, the main goal of this paper is to advocate for meeting those needs through the development of metadata standards. In particular, our methodology consists in showing and explaining the needs of a particular type of users (astronomers and astrophysicists) and proposing the inclusion in the standards of elements important for the description of historical astronomical resources. Through an example, we show not only the feasibility of application of these elements, but also how the enhancement of the level of specialization of the standards, and therefore of the records made under their rules, can definitely contribute to a global solution for a much improved scientific information retrieval. We live in a highly volatile technological environment, in which the generation of new data and information access tools has increased the level of specialization of the users’ information needs. The Associazione Italiana per la Documentazione Avanzata (AIDA) archive, temporarily stored at the University of Calabria for reorganization purposes, contains scientific and technical-administrative documents from which it is possible to draw information to re-construct the Association's activities and the role that it has played in the evolution of Documentation in Italy. AIDA was founded in 1983 by Paolo Bisogno and a team of researchers at the ISRDS-CNR with the aim of developing a documentary culture of information. The Association's mission was to spread knowledge about Documentation and the documentalist. It promoted the organization of events, training and certification activities. Moreover, it supported the scientific community through the establishment of working and study groups and contributed to the dissemination of information through the journal «AIDAinformazioni». AIDA was present in the national and international information science scene through collaboration with other professional associations
If the road towards a progressive dematerialization of the administrative document is marked, the legislator is not always proceeding in a coherent, clear or complete way. The line of reasoning needs to be focused on the administration of documental heritage, training and preservation rather than on technological issues, involving actively local administration and taking on responsibilities on decisions, also on the relationship between costs and benefits. The way is hard due to the lack of debate and practical directions, where the preservation should not be considered as a commanding confirmation, but as an occasion to face complex and critical issues.
