Libraries, Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence: J. C. R. Licklider and the Libraries of the Future
Full text linkIn 1965, J. C. R. Licklider published a book regarding the “Libraries of the future”. This book was soon almost forgotten when a different paradigm of computing, partially created by Licklider himself, became dominant. However, a re-reading of the book, in hindsight, not only gives a glimpse of a seminal moment in the history human interaction with computers but allows a chance to see in a different light many issues still relevant to the field.In 1965, J. La classificazione nell'organizzazione dei sistemi documentari digitali: criticità e nuove prospettive
Full text linkThe article presents a reflection on the Archival Classification with specific reference to the role that this function plays in Digital Documentary Systems. Those aspects have been dealt with in depth both on the methodological and theoretical level and directly on the ground since mid-Nineties of the last century; however, many relevant issues are still unanswered, despite the development of specific software and standards. This paper analyses the recent Italian and International literature, and highlights the delays of the current disciplinary research and of the practical experiences of the last years, that in many cases show an impasse or even a recession phase.L’articolo presenta una riflessione sul tema della classificazione d’archivio con specifico riferimento al ruolo che tale funzione è chiamata a svolgere nei sistemi documentari digitali. Si tratta di aspetti che la disciplina archivistica ha affrontato in modo approfondito sia sul piano teorico e metodologico che in ambito operativo a partire dalla metà degli anni Novanta del secolo scorso. Tuttavia molte questioni cruciali non hanno ancora trovato risposta nonostante lo sviluppo di applicativi e di standard di settore. Il contributo analizza la letteratura recente sia italiana che internazionale e mette in evidenza i ritardi accumulati in questo campo sia dalla ricerca disciplinare sia dalle esperienze concrete realizzate in questi ultimi anni che in alcuni sembrano addirittura conoscere una fase critica di stallo se non di arretrament

Full text linkThe essay shows the historical evolution of the profile of the Dewey Decimal Classification’s auxiliary tables. Essential to express the specificity and completeness of classified concepts, the auxiliary tables expanded and specialized over time to allow an increasingly stronger degree of specificity and consistency in the construction of the classification numbers. Since the first edition of 1876 to WebDewey, the auxiliary tables have been the parts of the Dewey Decimal Classification which developed more and had a more detailed review, as they include peculiar information of the individual countries, such as the geographical areas, ethnic and national groups and historical periods.Il saggio descrive l'evoluzione storica delle tavole ausiliarie della Classificazione Decimale Dewey. Indispensabile per esprimere la specificità e la completezza dei soggetti classificati, le tavole ausiliarie sono state espanse e si sono specializzate nel tempo per consentire un sempre maggiore livello di dettaglio e di coerenza nella costruzione dei numeri della classificazione. Dalla prima edizione del 1876 alla WebDewey, le tavole ausiliarie sono state quella parte della CDD ad essersi maggiormente sviluppata e ad aver ricevuto il maggior numero di revisioni nel dettaglio, dal momento che esse contengono informazioni rilevanti per ciascuno stato, come le indicazioni delle aree georgrafiche, di gruppi etnici e nazionali, e di periodi storici
The Evaluation of the quality of research (VQR): the librarian experience at the University of Florence
Full text linkL'articolo nasce allo scopo di mostrare una panoramica delle problematiche di interesse bibliotecario incorse durante gli esercizi di Valutazione della Qualità della Ricerca (VQR), in particolare la VQR 2011-2014, cui hanno partecipato gli Atenei italiani.L'analisi parte dalla partecipazione diretta dell'autore alle attività di consulenza e assistenza messe in atto nel proprio Ateneo, sia in occasione delle due campagne VQR, sia in occasione delle due tornate di Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN).L'articolo si rivolge a quei bibliotecari che, pur non avendo partecipato direttamente alle campagne VQR, siano interessati alle tematiche relative alla valutazione della ricerca accademica e alle loro ripercussioni nel contesto bibliotecario.In particolare, vengono affrontati le questioni relative alla gestione della doppia data di pubblicazione, all'aggancio con i codici identificativi e le conseguenze bibliometriche, e al diritto d'autore.This article aims at presenting an overview of the most interesting issues (from the librarians' point of view) happened during the last exercise of the Evaluation of the quality of research (VQR 2011-2014), to which all Italian universities took part.The analysis starts from the direct experience of the author as part of the consultation and assistance service at the University of Florence, both during the evaluation of the quality of research exercise and in the National scientific qualification (ASN).The paper would be helpful to those librarians who, although not involved by their own institutions, are interested in the themes of academic research evaluation and in their consequences for librarians themselves. In particular, issues like double publication data, international IDs and bibliometric results, and copyright are described

Full text linkThe paper presents some considerations about the organisation of catalogues and the functionalities of cataloguing tools with respect to the role of a public library. The first section focuses on the definition of the public library and its characteristics in a relationship with the catalogue. The second section deals with some problems of cataloguing organisation, specifically with the peculiarity of a public library catalogue as a bibliographic tool, the issue of cataloguing data types in relation to the users and the catalogue language, and catalogue use and its integration with the physical collection management.L’articolo intende presentare una riflessione sull’organizzazione dei cataloghi e la funzionalità degli strumenti catalografici rispetto alle funzioni di una biblioteca pubblica. La prima parte si focalizza sulla definizione di biblioteca pubblica e sulle sue specificità rispetto al catalogo. La seconda parte dell’articolo riguarda invece alcune problematiche di organizzazione catalografica, nello specifico la specificità del catalogo di una biblioteca pubblica come strumento di mediazione, la questione della tipologia dei dati catalografici rispetto al pubblico di riferimento e la lingua del catalogo, il suo uso e l’integrazione con la gestione fisica delle raccolte
EAD3 standard to codify archival data: some news and many confirmations
Full text linkAlla luce delle accresciute possibilità di offrire una descrizione archivistica più ricca e articolata e dell’ esperienza maturata negli anni, nell’estate 2015 la Society of American Archivists ha adottato come standard una nuova versione dell’Encoded Archival Description: EAD3. Il contributo, dopo aver ricostruito il processo decisionale e le modalità di revisione che hanno interessato la versione EAD 2002, analizza la nuova versione dello standard nei suoi aspetti maggiormente innovativi. Completa il contributo un’appendice relativa all’impiego di EAD3 all’inventario dell’archivio dell' Ex Ospedale psichiatrico Santa Maria della Pietà di Roma (1979-1999).In consideration of the increased possibilities to provide a richer and a more well-structured archival description and the experience matured in years, in Summer 2015 the Society of American Archivists has adopted the new version of Encoded Archival Description as a standard: EAD3. After retracing the decision process and the review related to the EAD 2002 version, the article examines the new version of the standard in its main original aspects. An appendix on the use of EAD3 in the inventory of Ex Ospedale psichiatrico Santa Maria della Pietà di Roma (1979-1999) archive, completes the essay
La classificazione archivistica: nuovi scenari d’uso tra web semantico e traditio degli esemplari digitali
Full text linkStarting from the acknowledgement of the basic purpose assigned by tradition to classification within documents management, the article faces the issues related to new needs and usage, related to the digital scenarios, that would allow classification to consolidate its tradition of effectiveness in a new digital environment. The key point of the article is represented by the in-depth analysis of the possible synergies between classification-related activities and the International Standard for Describing Functions (ISDF), developed by ICA in 2007. The article highlights how an approach to classification elaborated from the ISDF perspective allows classification itself to enrich from purposes and semantic web related usage, and with the traditio of digital documents. L’articolo, a partire dal riconoscimento della finalità essenziale che la tradizione ha assegnato alla classificazione nell’ambito della gestione documentale, si interroga se essa non sia chiamata a rispondere a nuove esigenze ed usi, strettamente legati allo scenario digitale e che le permettano di consolidare la sua tradizionale efficacia anche nel nuovo contesto tecnologico. Il punto chiave della trattazione è rappresentato dall’approfondimento delle sinergie possibili tra l’attività classificatoria e l’International Standard for Describing Functions (ISDF), norma elaborata dall’ICA nel 2007. L’articolo evidenzia infatti come un approccio alla classificazione, a partire dalla prospettiva rappresentata dall’ISDF, permetta alla stessa attività classificatoria di arricchirsi di finalità ed usi connessi con il web semantico e con la traditio dei documenti in forma d’esemplari digitali
Contemporary librarianship and special collections issues: a case study in manuscript collections of Timbuktu and other Malian cities
Full text linkThe article addresses the issues and challenges of special collections management through the case study of Timbuktu manuscript collections. The dual issues of preservation and access are presented in the light of current librarianship trends, highlighting the potential weaknesses of special collections libraries when faced with new missions. Given that inclusion and civil growth are part of Lyon’s declaration on libraries, we should check to which extent we are able to comply with these requirements also with respect to special collections. The Malian projects provide a good point of view because of the number of activities that are currently being performed: the main activities and the way the work is organised are described, addressing at the same time the issue of access and scholar needs. La classificazione ibrida: il caso della documentazione del procedimento di acquisto gestita dentro e fuori dal Sistema Informativo Contratti Pubblici dell'Alto Adige
Full text linkWith reference to the acquisition procedures, the related documentation is created and managed mostly on the platform of the subcontracting institution, partly on the Alto Adige Public Sector Contracts information system. With a partial integration between this system and the platform made available by the Agenzia per i procedimenti e la vigilanza in materia di contratti pubblici di lavori, servizi e forniture, classification and filing information can be assigned to the documents coming from both platform, while the reunification of documents related to the same process is transferred to the preservation system as unique archive of the administration.Nel caso dei procedimenti di acquisto di cui sono titolari le Stazioni Appaltanti dell'Alto Adige che si avvalgono della piattaforma messa a disposizione dall'Agenzia per i procedimenti e la vigilanza in materia di contratti pubblici di lavori, servizi e forniture, la documentazione relativa è formata e gestita in parte sul sistema di gestione documentale della stazione appaltante, in parte (per la gara) sul Sistema Informativo Contratti Pubblici dell'Alto Adige. Con una parziale integrazione dei due sistemi, le informazioni di classificazione e fascicolazione sono attribuite anche ai documenti gestiti in piattaforma, mentre il ricongiungimento dei documenti relativi al medesimo procedimento è demandato al sistema di conservazione come archivio unico dell'amministrazione
Text mining and network science to analyze the complexity of reading. Principles, methods, application experiences
Full text linkIl contributo propone una serie di considerazioni che riguardano la pratica della lettura, la sua fisionomia, le trasformazioni che la stanno investendo, il profilo sfumato della ecologia informativa di cui essa fa parte, e nello stesso tempo dà conto degli esiti di principi e metodologie di ricerca già avviate, e condotte con strumenti situati nel campo del text mining e della network science. La struttura del contributo può essere ricondotta alla presentazione e discussione di questi argomenti principali: a) inquadramento generale del contesto; b) analisi della lettura come sistema complesso; c) presentazione di alcuni concetti centrali della network science e loro applicazione all’analisi di dai estratti dalla piattaforma di social reading aNobii; d) introduzione al text mining, con i risultati dell’analisi di parole di recensioni ricavate anch’esse da aNobii; e) osservazioni conclusive e prospettiche.This paper proposes some reflections concerning the practice of reading, its conceptual structure and its transformations, the blurred profile of the information ecology in which it is inserted. At the same time illustrates some outcomes of a research project conducted with tools of text mining and network science on the social reading platform aNobii . The paper presents these main topics: a) general overview of reading's context; b) short discussion reading as a complex system; c) presentation of some central concepts of network science and of its applications; d) introduction to text mining with some results of analysis of aNobii's reviews; e) conclusions and prospectives.
