NARRATIVE HYBRIDITY, CULTURAL AUTHENTICATION, AND MARKET STRATEGIES IN HORROR CINEMA

    Get PDF
This study examines the hybrid narrative forms, cultural authentication strategies, and market adaptation mechanisms shaping Southeast Asian supernatural horror cinema. Focusing on films from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, it analyzes how filmmakers blend indigenous spiritual systems—animism, Buddhism, Islam, and Catholicism—with global horror conventions. Using textual analysis, expert interviews, and industry mapping, the research reveals how ritual practices, sacred symbols, and historical settings function not only as markers of authenticity but also as epistemological anchors. A key finding is the emergence of "platform-oriented hybridity," where narratives are restructured to meet the demands of global streaming algorithms while preserving cultural specificity. These films thus serve as cultural texts negotiating identity, belief, and trauma within postcolonial contexts. The study contributes to discourses on global media, transnational genre flows, and the political economy of streaming by highlighting Southeast Asian horror cinema’s dual role as a site of cultural expression and industrial innovation. Recommendations stress deeper ethnographic engagement and equitable digital representation

    Get PDF
Children are valuable assets to a nation and crucial for the future progress of society and the country. However, the reality of child labour persists as a global challenge, notably in many developing nations like Malaysia. Despite the enforcement of laws, international organisations such as the ILO and CRC continue to urge further action to address the issue of child labour in Malaysia including related to age, child’s right to education, and child labour in Sabah. This paper intends to conduct a thorough legal analysis of child labour, focusing on international and Malaysian laws. It begins by examining global standards set by key conventions and treaties. The study then transitions to an analysis of Malaysian legislation to evaluate alignment with international standards and effectiveness in addressing child labour issues. This study employs qualitative method. This study found that the government continues to actively combat child labour through amendments to legislation, such as the Children and Young Person (Employment) Act 1966, and by implementing the National Child Policy to ensure alignment with global standards. Nevertheless, conflict in the minimum age of children in local legislation infringes on the safety of children and young persons in employment. Recommendations are put forward to strengthen legal protections against child labour in Malaysia, calling for policy reforms, enhanced enforcement measures, better educational opportunities, and increased collaboration among stakeholders

    Get PDF
The complex impacts of agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural uses can cause food insecurity in homeless farmer households. The specific objectives of the study are (a) to find the reasons underlying the resilience of superior local food of homeless farmer households experiencing weakening functional benefits in rural areas prone to agricultural land conversion; (b) to find the answer to the slow accessibility of homeless farmer households to strengthening the resilience of superior local food in rural areas prone to agricultural land conversion. The research design combines qualitative and quantitative research approaches with a more dominant qualitative approach. For the qualitative approach, a phenomenological research method with semi-grounded research is used. The subjects of the study included rural farming communities in the Gamping Sub District (Sleman Regency) and Kasihan Sub District (Bantul Regency). Data analysis techniques are the Interactive Model of Analysis and Reflexive Model.   building human resources. However, food resilience is still weak in various elements of society, especially rural homeless farmer households that are vulnerable to agricultural land conversion. Food resilience is difficult to strengthen by respondent households due to empirical conditions that are directly caused by decreased income, purchasing power, employment opportunities as farm labourers, and the economic value of family members. Slow accessibility in strengthening superior local food resilience occurs in every respondent household. This slowness is evidenced by differences in empirical conditions in the elements of availability, sufficiency, security, diversity and justice in the distribution of food to family members

    Get PDF
Amid the escalating demands of 21st century education, the development of science process skills has become a critical priority that must be fostered from an early age through pedagogical activities emphasizing inquiry, experimentation, and reflective practice. This study seeks to address this imperative by designing and empirically validating a science instructional model for Indonesian elementary students that embeds the Integration of Engineering Design Process (EDP) Learning Model Based STEM Approach. The model was developed following the Dick and Carey instructional design paradigm and progressed through four major phases, including the specification of learning objectives, the design of an EDP integrated STEM instructional model, and the implementation of both formative and summative assessments. Expert judgment indicated a very high level of alignment and suitability across content, construct, and implementation dimensions, supporting the theoretical soundness of the proposed model. Classroom trials involving teachers and students demonstrated that the integration EDP based STEM learning model is feasible to implement and closely aligned with the demands of elementary science education. Effectiveness testing using the Independent Samples t test yielded a significance value of < 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference in science process skill scores between the experimental and control classes. These findings substantiate that the the Integration of Engineering Design Process (EDP) Learning Model Based STEM Approach possesses strong theoretical validity, commendable practicality, and substantial effectiveness in enhancing elementary students’ science process skills. By engaging students in EDP oriented STEM activities, the model provides authentic problem solving experiences that cultivate their abilities to observe, formulate hypotheses, design investigations, analyze data, and derive evidence based conclusions in real world contexts.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIRECTORS’ AND OFFICERS’ LIABILITY INSURANCE AND ESG PERFORMANCE OF FTSE4 GOOD BURSA MALAYSIA COMPANIES

    Get PDF
This study will analyze the correlation between Directors and Officers Liability insurance (D&O insurance) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance among the listed companies under FTSE4 Good Bursa Malaysia Index. It is aimed at evaluating how D&O insurance promotes sustainability of corporate practices through improving governance systems or, on the contrary, results in moral hazard and opportunistic actions. Through the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, the study relies on the annual report and ESG ratings on the financial year 2021 to assess how D&O insurance affects the ESG performance. The results show a high positive correlation, which means that the D&O insurance can help to reinforce corporate governance through responsible decision-making and sustainable business strategies. Nevertheless, the research also contains the possibility of risks, since the D&O insurance may create complacency in corporate executives, which may jeopardize the long-term ESG goals. The insight can be added to the existing body of knowledge regarding corporate governance and sustainability since it offers empirical data on the dual impact of D&O insurance in the Malaysian corporate environment. The originality of the study is in the fact that the novel monitoring and opportunistic hypotheses of the insurance are addressed in the framework of ESG, which proves to be highly beneficial in the context of businesses, investors, and policymakers. Knowing the subtle connection between D&O insurance and ESG performance, stakeholders will be able to come up with more constructive governance models that would maximize sustainable benefits and reduce the occurrence of unintended consequences

In this study, the effect of artificial intelligence literacy levels of physical education and sports teacher candidates on their future anxiety was evaluated by examining them in the context of different variables. The survey method was preferred in collecting data. The survey used in the study consists of three parts: The first part includes questions prepared by the researcher and includes demographic information about the gender, age and grade level of the participants. The second part uses the ‘Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale’ developed to measure the artificial intelligence literacy of teacher candidates. In the third part, the ‘Future Anxiety Scale’ prepared by Geylani and Çiriş-Yıldız (2020) to measure the future anxiety levels of university students was applied. G-Power analysis was performed to determine the sample size to participate in the study and the minimum number of participants was determined. No statistically significant difference was found in the analyzes made according to the gender, age and grade level variables of physical education and sports teacher candidates within the scope of the study. When the relationship between artificial intelligence literacy and future anxiety was analyzed, a positive but very weak correlation was observed. In addition, it was concluded that artificial intelligence literacy has a positive and significant effect on the future anxiety of physical education and sports teacher candidates

MODELING THE LIKELIHOOD OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH TRADE OPENNESS: A BAYESIAN LOGISTIC REGRESSION APPROACH

    Get PDF
This study investigates how trade openness affects the probability of achieving sustainable development across countries. Using panel data from 73 countries during 2002–2020, we employ a Bayesian logistic regression to model the likelihood that a country attains a relatively high level of sustainable development, measured by a composite index aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. The results indicate that trade openness has a positive and robust effect on the probability of achieving sustainable development. Importantly, the findings also reveal nonlinear effects, suggesting that both excessive trade expansion and abnormally low trade openness may weaken this positive impact. This highlights that the trade–sustainable development relationship is heterogeneous and context dependent. By adopting a Bayesian logistic framework, the study explicitly captures parameter uncertainty and cross country heterogeneity, offering a more refined assessment of sustainability outcomes. The findings provide policy relevant insights by emphasizing the need for balanced trade strategies and supportive institutional conditions to ensure that trade contributes effectively to long term sustainable development
