    No full text
The Medical Technology Department at University of Antofagasta (Chile) has incorporated the open-access virtual website e-Parasitology© (e-Parasitology© website) to strengthen the virtual teaching of medical/clinical parasitology in two healthcare programmes during the coronavirus pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) in 2020/21. Second year BSc Nursing and third year BSc Medical Technology students highly valued this intervention, as they reported learning about the specific pathology, prevention, and treatment of important worldwide parasitic diseases. Eighty percent of students from both cohorts also indicated acquisition of the competences to diagnose the infections due to these human parasites. Moreover, the results collected would suggest that e-Parasitology©, specifically its virtual microscope and library of digitized specimens, could be an appropriate (self-)learning tool to acquire time-consuming laboratory skills to identify common enteric parasites affecting Chile. Results collected also showed that the virtual website enhanced the interest of Chilean students on the study of medical and clinical parasitology, which also suggested a strengthening of the syllabus of parasitology in their respective pro-grammes to acquire a more comprehensive knowledge of this medical discipline, especially from Medical Technology students. As such, e-Parasitology© would be an appropriate virtual tool to strengthen the teaching status of parasitology to tackle important parasitic diseases

The use of enzymes in biotechnological applications is increasingly widespread, which involves both the storage of these enzymes and the preservation of their biological activity. Catalase catalyzes oxidation reactions to protect cells from reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the oxidation of dyes, among other functions. This enzyme is unstable in solution, which leads to aggregation and, consequently, loss of activity—resulting in significant economic losses. For these reasons, this study aims to investigate the use of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) magnetic nanoparticles coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) to adsorb and stabilize catalase. Different strategies were evaluated, including layer-by-layer(LbL) coating with polyelectrolytes such as alginate, PAA, and PEI. However, none of them succeeded in forming a stable protective layer, and the enzyme was released from the nanoparticle, leaving it unprotected. Although full encapsulation of the enzyme was not achieved, its adsorption onto the nanoparticle surface or direct interaction with PEI helped preserve its activity compared to free catalase in solution. This methodology demonstrates strong potential for developing strategies aimed at the long-term storage of labile biomolecules, highlighting the value of these structures for applications focused on the preservation of active proteins

    Get PDF
Recent advancements in materials science have led to the creation of innovative gel formulations like eutectogels, which exploit the distinctive characteristics of deep eutectic solvents (DES) to enhance the functionality and versatility of traditional gel systems. By incorporating fluorescent nanoparticles, eutectogels gain luminescent properties, significantly increasing their performance. In this study, we have developed and characterized a novel nanocomposite eutectogel by integrating conjugated polymer-based nanoparticles (CPNs) with varying emission bands, derived from either polyfluorene or poly(phenylenevinylene). Before synthesizing the fluorescent eutectogels, it was confirmed that the nanoparticles maintained the same fluorescent properties in both DES and aqueous solution. The results show that the incorporation of CPNs inside the eutectogels provides fluorescent materials with good properties in terms of integrity, thermal stability, homogeneity and reproducibility allowing their preservation during weeks. The fluorescent nanocomposite eutectogels were tested as sensing platforms by immobilizing enzymes. In particular, the capability of these materials to act as fluorescent biosensors for detecting hydrolase activity was successfully demonstrated, with alkaline phosphatase entrapped in the nanocomposite eutectogel serving as the model enzyme. This finding is one of the first demonstrations of the functioning of an enzyme in an eutectogel

    Get PDF
Introduction. Smoking is a long-standing problem that harms people and communities. Various agencies have been trying to design proactive initiatives, but they still struggle to find solutions to prevent illnesses and deaths caused by smoking. Despite numerous attempts to quit, many individuals still struggle to withdraw from this addiction. Hence, this study was conducted to explore the reasons why quitting smoking is challenging for early adult men.Methods. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, twenty research participants expressed their reasons through in-depth interviews. Results. This study reveals that early adult men continue to smoke despite knowing its health risks due to smoking's perceived role in completing their day, aiding digestion after meals, and providing a deceptive sense of relaxation. Additionally, the difficulties in withdrawing from smoking are attributed to fears of developing smoking-related diseases, the body's adaptation to nicotine's addictive effects, peer influence, intense cravings, and challenges in regulating psychological and emotional responses during withdrawal. These findings highlight the interplay of psychological, social, and habitual factors that sustain smoking habits among early adult men. Conclusions. The study concludes that a combination of ingrained daily routines, social influences, and intense physical and psychological dependencies hinders smoking cessation. Effective smoking cessation interventions must address these challenges, incorporating strategies for emotional regulation, peer support, and tailored therapies to mitigate cravings and withdrawal symptoms. By understanding and targeting the specific reasons for continued smoking and difficulties in cessation, more effective public health strategies can be developed to reduce smoking rates and improve health outcomes in this demographic.

    No full text
A group of viruses within the Begomovirus genus is responsible for tomato yellow leaf curl virus disease (TYLCVD). The genus Begomovirus belongs to the family Geminiviridae, which is divided into 14 genera. TYLCV is a virus that since its emergence in 1939 continues to severely affect tomato crops worldwide, partly due to its ease of recombination and emergence of new mutations. The virus is transmitted by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), and since measures to control B. tabaci populations are not fully effective and there is always a risk of infection, the best defence mechanism is genetic resistance. Two sets of breeding lines with different homozygous combinations of the Ty-1 and ty-5 genes (Ty-1 lines, ty-5 lines, Ty-1/ty-5 lines and susceptible lines) were studied. A priori, this is the first study of TYLCV inoculation under controlled conditions in lines carrying the Ty-1 and ty-5 genes. The aim of the study was to evaluate the behaviour of tomato breeding lines carrying these two genes and test their level of tolerance to TYLCV. All plants showed a homogeneous response depending on the genotype studied. The results of the breeding lines studied with all homozygous combinations of the Ty-1 and ty-5 genes were consistent with those of the controls. Susceptible genotypes (ss/SS) showed severe symptoms and high viral accumulation, and resistant genotypes (Ty-1/ty-5, ty-5 and Ty-1) showed very mild symptoms and low viral accumulation. The phenotypic responses to TYLCV can be classified into two groups: the susceptible genotypes (ss/SS) for the two genes and the resistant genotypes (Ty-1, ty-5 and Ty-1/ty-5), presenting Ty-1, ty-5 or both. In this study, we have demonstrated that both Ty-1 and ty-5, whether used together or individually, provide a similarly high level of resistanc
