Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo transversal retrospectivo. NSCLC includes subtypes such as adenocarcinoma (ADC, 50-60%) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC, 20-30%). Advances in molecular diagnostics (NGS) and targeted therapies (EGFR, ALK, PD-L1) have improved prognosis. ESMO/SEOM guidelines prioritise actionable biomarkers (EGFR, KRAS G12C, BRAF V600E) to optimise treatments. Objective: to determine the prevalence of molecular alterations and their histopathological correlation in patients with advanced stage NSCLC at HGUA. Materials and methods: retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study of 352 patients with NSCLC diagnosed in 2023. NSCLC was excluded (6.6%). Variables analysed: age, sex, histological subtype, predictive biomarkers (PD-L1 by IHC; EGFR, KRAS, ALK, tec., by NGS/PCR) and prognostic biomarkers. Data collected by REDCap and analysed by SPSS (χ² test, Fisher). Results: 377 lung cancer patients were diagnosed in 2023: 352 NSCLC and 25 SCLC. NSCLC patients had a median age of 67 years and were predominantly male (66%). The most frequent histological types were non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (61.4%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (27.8%). Biomarker studies were available in 125 patients (35.5%), identifying mainly EGFR (15.2%) and KRAS G12C (9.6%) mutations, with 92.5% of alterations concentrated in adenocarcinomas. EGFR mutations were significantly more frequent in patients younger than 67 years (p<0.05) and predominantly in adenocarcinomas (89.5%). PD-L1 expression, evaluated in 219 patients, showed positivity in 40% of cases (30% low, 10% high expression), with significant differences between histological subtypes (50% in ESCC vs 33.5% in adenocarcinomas, p<0.05). Of note was the high frequency of concomitant alterations, present in 68.4% of cases with mutated EGFR (mainly TP53) and in 88.9% of cases with mutated KRAS G12C (TP53, STK11 and PD-L1). Conclusions: a prevalence of 15.2% EGFR mutations, 42% positive PD-L1 expression and 9.6% KRAS G12C mutations was observed. Histopathologically, EGFR and KRAS G12C alterations were identified in adenocarcinomas, while elevated PD-L1 expression occurred predominantly in squamous carcinomas. A high frequency of concomitant genetic alterations was evident, present in 68.4% of EGFR-positive cases and 88.9% of KRAS G12C-positive cases. In tumours with EGFR mutations, the most frequent co-alteration was TP53, while in KRAS G12C cases, simultaneous alterations in TP53, STK11 and PD-L1 were observed

The introduction of virus resistance genes into traditional tomato varieties offers a strategy to preserve genetic diversity and enhance commercial viability. However, the homozygous presence of these genes has been associated with negative effects on yield and fruit quality. This two-year study evaluated the impact of introducing the Tm-2a, Sw-5 and Ty-1 genes, which are associated with resistance to ToMV, TSWV and TYLCV, respectively, on the agronomic yield, fruit characteristics and metabolic profile of Muchamiel-type cultivars. Four hybrids were obtained by crossing two breeding lines carrying the resistance genes in homozygosis (UMH1139 and UMH1200) with two traditional susceptible varieties (MC1 and MC2). Hybrids matched or exceeded the agronomic performance of their parents. Fruit morphology of the hybrids was similar to traditional parents. The presence of Ty-1 correlated with reduced organic acid concentration, though hybrids exhibited higher levels than the homozygous line, UMH1200. No negative effects on soluble sugars or secondary metabolites were observed. Genotypes carrying resistance genes, breeding lines and hybrids exhibited higher flavonoid contents, suggesting a potential role in virus response. Hybrids maintained or improved the bioactive profile of traditional varieties. These findings support the development of Muchamiel-type hybrids that combine the presence of virus resistance genes in heterozygosity with the desirable traits of traditional tomatoes

Enhancing Calcium Transport with Polyols in Table Grapes: A Sustainable Tool for Agriculture

    No full text
Table grapes suffer significant losses from issues such as fungal infections, cracking, and berry shattering, which affect them both in the vineyard during ripening and throughout postharvest storage. Current control methods, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) treatments, are increasingly constrained by potential fruit damage and regulatory limitations, prompting a search for sustainable alternatives. This review proposes sorbitol as an innovative preharvest solution to enhance table grape quality through improved calcium (Ca2+) transport. Ca is a vital macronutrient for cell wall integrity and fruit resistance; however its inherent low mobility in the phloem restricts its effective delivery to developing fruits, particularly after veraison. Sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar-alcohol, acts as a "vector" by forming stable, soluble complexes with Ca, thereby facilitating its crucial translocation to fruit tissues. Preharvest foliar applications of these calcium-sorbitol complexes have demonstrated numerous benefits-, improving fruit firmness, reducing the incidence of cracking and shattering, mitigating fungal decay, and boosting antioxidant activity. These effects collectively enhance overall fruit quality and extend storability. Future investigations will aim to further clarify the molecular mechanisms involved and explore sorbitol’s potential to complex with other poorly mobile nutrients and plant elicitors, opening new avenues for sustainable crop management

This Final Degree Project focuses on analyzing how television advertising in the cosmetics sector has evolved from the 1980s to the present day. Through the study of brands such as Nivea, Dove, Garnier, and L'Oréal, the aim has been to understand not only the evolution of the ads but also the values they convey and how these influence society's perception of beauty. The methodology combined content analysis of representative commercials from different decades, interviews with communication experts such as Andrea Manzanares and Conchi Leal, and a survey answered by 102 participants. This approach provided a broader and more grounded understanding of how audiences interpret these messages. The results show that cosmetic advertising has shifted from reinforcing rigid and unattainable beauty standards to embracing more inclusive and diverse narratives. Although some ads still rely on stereotypes, there has been notable progress toward campaigns that highlight different body types, ages, and lifestyles, and that promote messages of natural beauty, self-esteem, and sustainability. Brands like Dove particularly stand out for establishing an emotional and authentic connection with their audiences. In conclusion, this project has been an opportunity to reflect on the power of advertising not only as a commercial tool but also as a driver of social change. When done consciously and responsibly, cosmetic advertising can help build a more realistic and human image of beauty, one that reflects the diversity present in today’s society

    Get PDF
Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (HPTp) is a disease of mineral metabolism characterised by excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) production. In 2008, a form of presentation characterised by the presence of elevated PTH levels and normocalcemia maintained over time, termed normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (HPTpNC), was defined. Many aspects of its pathophysiology remain debated, and many unknowns persist about its evolution, clinical impact and best therapeutic strategies, underlining the need for further studies to optimise its management. Objectives: the main objective is to analyse whether there are differences in patient characteristics and surgical treatment and outcomes in HPTpNC compared to hypercalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (HPTpHC). Secondary objectives are to analyse the characteristics of patients who undergo surgery for HPTp in our setting, as well as to analyse aspects related to surgical treatment. Material and methods: A retrospective, observational and analytical clinical study was carried out in which the study population was the group of patients diagnosed with HPTp undergoing parathyroidectomy in the General and Digestive Surgery Service of the University Hospital of San Juan de Alicante (HUSJA), analysing a group diagnosed with HPTpNC and another group with HPTpHC. Finally, 52 patients operated on in the General and Digestive Surgery Service of the HUSJA from 2016 to the present were included and 76 variables were evaluated. Results: total 52 patients with HPTp were included, identifying 46 with a hypercalcemic phenotype and 6 with a normocalcemic phenotype. More than half of the patients were asymptomatic at diagnosis (61.5%); among the symptomatic patients there were statistically significant differences in terms of clinical osteoarticular presentation (17.4% in the HPTpHC group versus 66.7% in the HPTpNC group, p=0.021). There were no differences in all other laboratory variables, location, functional status or chronic medical treatments. There were differences in the dimensions of the removed parathyroid, significantly smaller in the HPTpNC group (1.4 cm versus 0.9 cm, p=0.009); significantly lower postoperative albumin-corrected calcium levels in the HPTpNC group (median 9.29 versus 8.94 mg/dL, p=0.034) and significantly higher postoperative vitamin D levels in the HPTpNC group (median 32 versus 54 ng/mL, p=0.039). Surgery was successful in 51 patients, in the remaining one (belonging to the hypercalcemic group) the pathological gland could not be located. There were few post-surgical complications, all in the HPTpHC group: 2 transient hypocalcaemias (4.3%), 3 transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries (6.5%) and 1 local complication (seroma; 2.2%). A statistically significant difference was found comparing the presence of thyroid, bone or renal disease and the incidence of complications at 1-year follow-up (p=0.034). Conclusions: there were significant differences in terms of greater presentation of osteoarticular symptoms and smaller dimensions of the removed parathyroid gland in the normocalcemic group; and lower postoperative albumin-corrected calcium levels and higher postoperative vitamin D levels in the normocalcemic group

    Get PDF

The benefits of daily sports practice on cardiovascular health are undeniable. However, sudden cardiac death (SCD) associated with sports is a tragic phenomenon that generates significant impact when it occurs in elite athletes. The incidence of this event remains controversial and largely unknown, partly due to the lack of consensus on establishing a unified research methodology. Regarding SCD prevention strategies, there is considerable debate surrounding the inclusion of ECG in athlete screening. On the one hand, European guidelines advocate for ECG inclusion, arguing that it provides greater sensitivity. On the other hand, American guidelines oppose its use due to a higher rate of false positives. Nevertheless, both approaches agree on the importance of identifying individuals at higher risk for SCD by recognizing associated risk factors (age, ethnicity, sex, and exercise intensity) and tailoring prevention strategies accordingly. As for the causes of SCD, a significant difference has been observed between older (>35 years) and younger (<35 years) athletes. Specifically, coronary atherosclerotic disease is the leading etiological cause in older athletes, while in younger ones, underlying genetic abnormalities causing functional or structural disorders (such as cardiomyopathies and channelopathies) are the primary contributors

    Get PDF

Optimal DC Fast-Charging Strategies for Battery Electric Vehicles During Long-Distance Trips

    Get PDF
The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (BEVs) has increased the need to understand how fast-charging strategies influence long-distance travel times under real-world conditions. While most manufacturers specify maximum charging power and standardized driving ranges, these figures often fail to reflect actual highway operation, particularly in adverse weather. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the fast-charging behaviour, net battery capacity and highway energy consumption of 62 EVs from different market segments. Charging power curves were obtained experimentally at high-power DC stations, with data recorded through both the charging infrastructure and the vehicles’ battery management systems. Tests were conducted, under optimal conditions, between 10% and 90% state of charge (SoC), with additional sessions performed under both cold and preconditioned battery conditions to show thermal effects on the batteries’ fast-charging capabilities. Real-world highway consumption values were applied to simulate 1000 km journeys at 120 km/h under cold (−10 °C, cabin heating) and mild (23 °C, no AC) weather scenarios. An optimization model was developed to minimize total trip time by adjusting the number and duration of charging stops, including a 5 min detour for each charging session. Results show that the optimal charging cutoff point consistently emerges around 59% SoC, with a typical deviation of 10, regardless of ambient temperature. Charging beyond 70% SoC is generally inefficient unless dictated by charging station availability. The optimal strategy involves increasing the number of shorter stops—typically every 2–3 h of driving—thereby reducing total trip
