Get PDFThough intercultural competence (ICC), community service learning (CSL), languages for specific purposes (LSP), and heritage learners (HLs) have respectively received increasing attention by language scholars within the previous twenty years, much remains to be done in the way of research concerning the relationship between them. The term HLs is used by academics in the United States in reference to students with previous knowledge of the target language and culture as a result of their cultural heritage and upbringing. This article considers the relevance of CSL to HL intercultural competence through a discussion of a 2015 community service learning project and study titled Creating Communities, Engaged Scholarship (CruCES). The project involved students and faculty from the University of Memphis, local non-profit organizations, and community members from the linguistically and ethnically diverse neighborhood of West Binghampton in Memphis, Tennessee (USA). CruCES sought to build capacity and foster community through the development of sustainable micro-economy projects centered on the arts. During the project, students also participated in a study on ISD. This paper considers the implications of the study’s findings for HLs specifically. In total, eight of the fifteen participating students self-identified as HLs. The CruCES project outcomes and study data for participating HLs are most telling with regards to their unique subjective positioning and language learning. Specifically, the study found that participating HLs demonstrated a higher degree of cultural sensitivity at the outset of the project and experienced an increase in self confidence and self-esteem related to the purposeful application of their language skills. A transformational experience for many of the HLs, the CruCES study findings hold significant implications for the development and integration of CSL in LSP courses and HL education
Bridging the gap within text-data analytics: a computer environment for data analysis in linguistic research
Get PDFSince computer technology became widespread available at universities during the last quarter of the twentieth century, language researchers have been successfully employing software to analyse usage patterns in corpora. However, although there has been a proliferation of software for different disciplines within text-data analytics, e.g. corpus linguistics, statistics, natural language processing and text mining, this article demonstrates that any computer environment intended to support advanced linguistic research more effectively should be grounded on a user-centred approach to holistically integrate cross-disciplinary methods and techniques in a linguist-friendly manner. To this end, I examine not only the tasks that are derived from linguists\u27 needs and goals but also the technologies that appropriately deal with the properties of linguistic data. Get PDFThe paper addresses the role of the cognitive model profile, one of the fundamental constructs in LCCM Theory (a.k.a. access semantics), in meaning construction and knowledge representation with respect to the concept of Europe. The study is based on a corpus of news articles retrieved from the Guardian from May 2004 through December 2009 (approximately 930,000 words) and focuses on the lexical item Europe (over 4000 corpus occurrences). The study takes its theoretical underpinnings from LCCM Theory, a theory of lexical representation and semantic composition, which delineates the roles the linguistic and the conceptual systems play in meaning construction (e.g., Evans 2009, 2013).The paper documents the immense semantic potential of the lexical item Europe as manifest in the Guardian’s discourse under analysis. In terms of knowledge representation, to account for the coherent body of multimodal knowledge which the lexical item Europe affords access to, its cognitive model profiles relevant to its two lexical concepts are constructed. As far as the role of the cognitive model profile in meaning construction is concerned, the study demonstrates how the context, specifically the co-text, determines the activation of a respective portion of the cognitive model profile of the lexical item Europe.

La recolección de narraciones orales y su estudio en correlación con factores sociales: el valor de la entrevista sociolingüística
Get PDFThis article examines the sociolinguistic interview as a technique for collecting personal experience narratives for sociolinguistic analysis. My aim is to try to answer the main critiques that this data collection technique has received and to present concrete cases that corroborate its importance. The data provided allows to prove that the findings concerning these narratives do not depend on the scenario in which they are generated. This is why Labov and Waletzky’s (1967) and Labov’s (1972) narrative structure is generally used for the construction of any personal experience narrative.

Se intenta responder a las principales críticas que ha recibido esta técnica de recolección de datos y se ofrecen casos concretos que corroboran su importancia. Los datos presentados permiten comprobar que los hallazgos sobre narraciones no dependen del escenario en el que estas se generen. En consecuencia, la propuesta de estructura narrativa de Labov y Waletzky (1967) y de Labov (1972) es la que se utiliza, en general, en la construcción de cualquier narración de experiencia personal.

No full textEste trabajo contextualiza las distintas estrategias de la multinacional Zara-Inditex en los ámbitos del modelo de negocio, la innovación, la internacionalización y la gestión del conocimiento e identifica un total de 42 factores clave de éxito que han llevado Inditex a convertirse en la primera empresa del mundo en el sector de la moda. Se ha realizado un análisis cualitativo basado fundamentalmente en información secundaria, incluyendo un análisis-comparativo de diversos casos escritos por otros autores sobre la empresa Zara-Inditex. Finalmente se valora, en base al estudio realizado, la importancia de cada uno de los factores previamente identificados.This paper contextualizes the different strategies of the multinational enterprise Zara-Inditex in several fields: business model, innovation, internationalization and knowledge management. It identifies a total of 42 key success factors that have led Inditex to become the first fashion company in the world. A qualitative analysis based mainly on secondary information has been carried out, including a comparative analysis of several cases written by other authors about the company Zara-Inditex. Finally, the importance of each of the previously identified factors is assessed based on the research

No full textEn el presente trabajo se analiza la influencia del entorno sociocultural, familiar y universitario en la intención de emprender en una región periférica europea, con un sistema de innovación muy poco desarrollado, como es el caso de las Islas Canarias. Para ello, se adopta la perspectiva de la teoría de la acción planificada y se lleva a cabo un trabajo empírico con una muestra de estudiantes universitarios participantes en el proyecto Guesss. Entre los resultados obtenidos, destaca la importancia del contexto universitario en la intención emprendedora a través de sus antecedentes, en especial de las actitudes.This paper analyzes the influence of family, sociocultural and university environments on entrepreneurial intention in a European peripheral region, with a less developed innovation system: the Canary Islands. To do this, the perspective of Theory of Planned Behavior is adopted and an empirical study is developed using a sample of Spanish university students in the context of Guesss project. The main results obtained indicate the importance of a university context in entrepreneurial intention through its antecedents, especially attitudes
