Language learning, as we know it today, has experienced a Copernican turn that - among other reasons - finds its roots in an unprecedented technological revolution, the creation of real communicative contexts, students’ motivation and need to learn new languages, and the ubiquity of learning. These factors make the combination of linguistic and digital competences a key construct of the learningprocess, which enables learners to access new access tools, platforms and online environments. The research project entitled “LinguApp: Asegurando el acceso al aprendizaje universal e inclusivo de segundas lenguas”, funded by Fundación Pública Andaluza Centro de Estudios Andaluces (Andalusian Regional Government), planned the development and validation of two instruments devoted to the assessment of websites for language learning. The first instrument evaluates the technical characteristics of the websites. The second instrument assesses more specifically which language skills are developed and how this process takes place by focusing on the contents andactivities that the given website offers. This paper presents the statistical results of the design and validation process, and concludes that this type of tools can decisively contribute to the development of research in this area, where technology has substantially modified theprocess of learning and teaching second languages.
Non-pronominal uses of it: a case study in women’s fashion magazines
The use of English as a global language has largely affected other languages, both in general and specialized areas, particularly at the lexical level due to themassive borrowing of English words. Anglicisms are most visible in the language of fashion, where they are highly appreciated and associated to prestige and “coolness”, apart from linguistically representing the rapid advances and modernization of fashion that sometimes make languages unable to cope with the speed with which extralinguistic realities change. The present study, based on a sample of over four million words from leading fashion magazines published in Spanish, focuses on the use of itin its non-pronominal uses, that is, it aims at identifying and describing the adjectival uses of itwhich may be either directly taken from English in short phrases or compounds like it girl, or adapted to Spanish linguistic contexts as in “calzadoit”,“más it”,“lait prenda”. Furthermore, the study also reveals new uses of it, or rather pseudo-English uses that appear in Spanish fashion magazines and which are the result of different linguistic phenomena. In particular, nominal uses like “la ‘it’ del mes”, “todas las it”or “nuestrasits favoritas” have been detected
Modal verbs in the abstract genre in the field of tourism
This paper looks into the use of modal verbs in a corpus of abstracts excerpted from scientific papers in the field of tourism. These texts have been written by specialists in tourism studies. Our study will show the way in which modality is used to show the authors’ intention as to the contents of their texts. The pragmatic implications of modal uses will be highlighted bearing in mind the purposes of the abstractgenre within the academic paper. The methodology of study is corpus linguistics, and the framework of analysis includes the works of Palmer (1979; Palmer, 1986)and Collins (2009), among others. This paper is part of a larger research on modal verbs in touristic scientific papers
Ensuring uniformity of content and assessment in on-site ESP university courses through ICT
The paper presents an experience of use of ICT intended to overcome some of the problems currently plaguing ESP teaching at third level in Spain, namely student overcrowding, rising grade appealing, inadequacy and/or datedness of methodologies and syllabi, multi-campus lecturing, and disproportionate course management and assessment workload. The experience was developed in English for Commerce I, an on-site ESP required course in the curriculum of the BA in Commerce and Marketing currently taught at the University of Oviedo, during the first term of the year 2016/2017. The main aims were (1) to update the contents and methods of the course so that they allowed for significant, collaborative and autonomous learning of commercial English; (2) to significantly reduce the time the lecturers devoted to preparing, grading and reviewing tests, as well as handling student complaints, and (3) to greatly improve staff coordination so that uniformity of content and assessment could be guaranteed. The results show that aims (1) and (3) were fully met. As regards aim (2), even though ICT did reduce the time spent reviewing tests and handling complaints, the authors feel that the preparation of computer-assisted, on-site exams took longer than expected. Whereas the literature on the use of ICT in education mainly focuses on student motivation and engagement, the experience also bears out that ICT can be effectively used to combat student unhappiness by ensuring uniformity of content and assessment across sections in multi-section courses.
Cómo afrontar la adaptación cultural de las Multinacionales Chinas en España / How to face cultural adaptation of the Chinese multinational companies in Spain
The cultural adaptation of Emerging Market Multinational Enterprises (EMNEs) to Europe is of particular relevance owing to the considerable cultural distance between emerging and developed economies and the isomorphic conflicts that can arise at the subsidiary level. Here, we examine this problem by reporting two case studies of Chinese subsidiaries operating in Spain. Our findings suggest that the adoption and adaptation of Chinese cultural values and practices to the local environment allow the subsidiary to align itself with the parent organization’s culture at the same time as it embeds itself in the host environment, thus resolving any isomorphic conflicts.
Economías de aglomeración e innovación e innovación de empresas multinacionales localizadas en España / Agglomeration economies and innovation of MNES located in Spain
Given the current competitive demands of each time more global environment, the choice of a specific location by multinational companies not only responds to the search for new markets but also of external knowledge which encourages innovation and local adaptation. This explains the fact that some of these companies choose as location, places characterized by a higher level of business concentration despite the high risk of being imitated. Ultimately, however, the access to and the use of external knowledge depends on the ability of each company to participate in the networks where knowledge is created and shared; depending also on the capacity of the firm to apply it in innovation of products, processes, organizational and/or commercial practices. Results show the differences between foreign and local companies
