Current ways of informal globalized communication involve digital genres facilitating increasingly dialogical, immediate interactions. One representative example is found in blogs, where users’ interaction is enabled through the genre of the comment to a previous post. In a corpus of 15 entries from 5 travel blogs, 318 comments have been analysed to study international participation in the blogosphere by different English users, native and non-native speakers. First, the quantity and length of their contributions are studied to consider the possible impact of their linguacultural background in ELF digital communication. Second, a discursive data-driven analysis of travel blog comments is provided, highlighting its most salient features, in order to better comprehend this specific digital discourse and to favour international successful participation in such a web-mediated environment.

Assessment in Spanish heritage language programs

Spanish heritage language learners (HLLs) are heterogeneous in nature. Thus, how can we assess these students? Most of the literature on this has been on placement exams (Polinsky & Kagan, 2017, among others), but the focus of this article is on assessment in Spanish heritage courses. Placement test results should be indicators of what should be included in the curriculum. One of the main challenges is the lack of the following components: specific proficiency indicators for HLLs, consensus in defining key concepts, understanding dialect variation, assessment for measuring linguistic skills, and finally research on HLLs’ assessment (Malone, Kreeft Peyton, & Kim, 2014). Thus, assessment is the biggest challenge in HL education due to the dominant monolingual ideologies, so formative assessment practices are recommended to confront them by allowing HLLs to negotiate their linguistic identities via multilingual perspectives (King, Liu, & Schwedhelm, 2018). What are specific tools or activities to negotiate these? Personal narratives of US Latinos were collected by Carreira and Beeman (2014) for the sake of reflections of HLLs as language brokers. González-Davies (2004, 2018) also mentions the importance of peer-to-peer strategies for translation competence. These projects can also become group projects, like the manifestos implemented by Moreno and MacGregor-Mendoza (2019) in a course in which language, culture, and community are the goals. All these activities are examples of the kinds of assessment that may be effective in the heritage classroom and may guide their instructors. The goal of this article is to suggest activities to connect HLLs with their communities at the same time that their learning gains are assessed in terms of language proficiency.Spanish heritage language learners (HLLs) are heterogeneous in nature. In this article we report on the impact of the bijuridic and bilingual context on the teaching - learning of legal French (FOS). Thus, phenomena such as diglossia, bilingualism and bijuridism have an impact on the configuration of a legal system. For this purpose, we take as an example Morocco as a country of the French-speaking Maghreb whose legal system is characterised by a legal duality (Islamic law and French law) and a linguistic duality (Arabic and French).   The analysis of the representative corpus reveals that the conceptual asymmetries between two legal systems expressed in the French language can only be taught and learned by applying a contextual and intercultural approach.

This didactic proposal exemplifies the use of creative writing as a way to approach gender studies, through the creation of a fantasy hero. The activity offers the possibility of working both the apparent and underlaying conflicts, where gender roles can offer different answers and redefine narratological structures. The students work on their own literary creation to define their literary expectations and the predominant conflicts that appear in fantasy and fiction stories in their social and ideological context. The contrast of their own textual creations with the analyses of textual and audiovisual examples from fantasy and science fiction by female authors and including female characters offers the possibility of generating a contrastive and constructive space, which also links to educational competences and facilitates a comparatist approach to literary criticism.

The objective of this article is to examine the profile of entrepreneurs who failed in previous businesses, but despite their initial failure, decide to start or maintain another business; in the context of a Latin American country (Chile). Results show that for Chilean entrepreneurs, there is a different profile between those who fail and abandon and those who decide to start a new business after failing. These differences show that post-failure entrepreneurs behave like angel investors, have better skills and are more experienced. Additionally, they are more likely to share ownership of their new business.

    Get PDF
This work analyzes how the family climate affects the establishment of non-financial or socio-emotional goals in family businesses, and suggests that this influence is mediated by the degree of family identification with the company. More specifically, we propose that positive family dynamics generate identification of the family with its company. In turn, identification leads the company to adopt non-financial goals. These hypotheses are confirmed by the data obtained from 374 members of senior management teams in 173 Spanish unlisted family companies.

    Get PDF
Legal language is conceived as a sub-variety of the common language characterized by very specific features and is shown to be the immutable reflection of the behaviors that underlie each culture and differentiate it from others. In this regard, this article brings together the particularities of Italian and Spanish legal language in order to provide a brief decalogue of the most representative aspects to be taken into account in its translation through numerous examples drawn from current legislation. Initially, the lexical-semantic level will be dealt with, where the presence of foreign words and phraseology will take the main role; the morphosyntactic level, on the other hand, will pay special attention to the nominalization and the verbal tenses used in both languages; and finally, the orthographic and style level will focus mainly on the use of acronyms and abbreviations and on the obscurantism of legal language.
