PARAMETRIC STUDY OF VIBRATION OF THIN PLATES WITH VARYING ASPECT RATIO
Parametric analysis of plate vibrations studies using varying aspect ratio plates was conducted. The effect of aspect ratio on the difference between plate element idealization and beam element idealization was explored.Aspect ratios varying from 0.5 to 5 with end-conditions clamped-clamped, clamped-free and pin-pin have beenconsidered for the present study. Natural frequencies and mode shapes were estimated using beam element idealization. A computer program VMECAS (velaso metallic and elastic coupling analysis of structures) was used. Whereas, a finite element analysis program, SAP90 (structural analysis program 90) was used for the estimation of natural frequencies and mode shapes based on plate element idealization. The material selected for the parametric study was Aluminum. Finally both experimental and theoretical results were compared to establish the error levels
TRACTOR-SIZE SELECTION MODEL FOR MULTI-CROP FARMS OF PAKISTAN
Selection of proper size tractor is imperative to decrease the cost of productions, and to increase the net profit of the growers. Various techniques have been developed, but these are not applicable in Pakistan's condition.Moreover, in Pakistan small range of tractor (33-56 kW) is available and farmers are supposed to select optimum size tractor among this range. A computer-aided model was developed to select proper size of tractor for multi-crop farms of Pakistan based on time constraints approach. It also enables the farmers to predict free time of tractor available for custom hiring
BENEFICIATION STUDIES OF MALAKAND LOW GRADE GRAPHITE ORE FOR INDUSTRIAL USE
Graphite due to its wide variety of industrial applications has been used since old ages. In Malakand area graphite occurs in association with impurities such as quartz, calcite, mica, apatite, pyrite etc. In order to obtain high grade marketable graphite removal of these impurities is necessary, The present study has been undertaken to upgrade the Malakand low grade and make it suitable for industrial use. Flotation technique was applied for beneficiation studies using locally available reagents. Detailed flotation tests were carried out to investigate the effects of flotation parameters on grade and recovery of graphite, these included particle size, type of collector, conditioning time, impeller speed, pulp density and flotation time. Carbon content of 14% in the graphite feed has been enhanced to 80% in the final concentrate product
FORMULATION OF NUMERICAL TECHNIQUE TO DEVELOP t-z CURVE USING LOAD SETTLEMENT DATA FROM PILE LOAD TEST
Until recently very few successful attempts, have been made to analyze the behavior of piles and pile systems. This is partly associated with the historical development of piling in that a strong tradition of empiricism has become part of the folklore of piling. When one attempt to take into account aspects such as the effect of pile installation major difficulties apparently arise, but the fact that a complete solution cannot be derived does not preclude the use of analytical approaches based on simple models of soil behavior.In this paper a simple numerical technique based on load transfer approach is developed to capture the response of the soil to displacement, as experimental technique of instrumenting the pile along the length of pile would have been very costly. This technique uses the available load settlement data from pile load test not instrumented along pile during load testing and back figures the response of soil along pile length.Once the load settlement response of soil along pile length is known, the curves can be used for the same site to study the effect of different length and/or diameter of the pile on the load settlement curve of pile. In addition, the load settlement curve for other sites can be generated if the soil profile does not vary remarkably from that soil profile from which the load settlement response of soil is developed. This technique is then applied to load settlement data of three pile load tests conducted in various localities of NWFP
EFFICIENCY OF ALTERNATING LINE SOR IN ARTERIAL MODEL OF BRAMLEY AND SLOAN
This paper present efficiency of Alternating Line Successive Over Relaxation method in generation nonorthogonal grids for arterial model of Bramley and Sloan. This iterative method is referred to as ALSOR. Results are tabulated and compared by considering three different grid sizes. For convergence 10^-4 is taken as error tolerance and alternating line SOR parameter.w = 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.95, 1.99 for Grid size 1,w = 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.95, 1.99 for Grid size 11 andw = 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.95 for Grid size 111 are adjusted.Efficiency of the iterative method is also discussed at the end
WATER HARVESTING FOR DOMESTIC AND LIVESTOCK USE IN ARID ENVIRONMENT OF DERA ISMAIL KHAN
A study was conducted under the auspices of Rod-Kohi development project at target area of village JANDAR, Mauza Giloti (Yarik) D. I. Khan to develop cost effective techniques for enhancement of runoff from the catchment area and for providing clear drinking water for household and livestock purposes. Compaction of the land of test site was carried out to reduce infiltration rate. Sand filters at the test site were installed and water was stored in an old renovated underground tank.
The physical and chemical analysis of water indicated an improvement in its quality. The improvement in rated water from class four to class one, based on appearance, taste and ordor. The pH reduced from 8.5 to 7.43 after compacting the catchment area and filtration. The compaction of catchment area also helped in increase the runoff and ultimately it enhanced the availability of water. The study also revealed that sand filter is a cost-effective technique and can be constructed by farmers by using the locally available materials
ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS OF WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT OF PAKISTAN STEEL
Waste water collected from municipalities and industries must ultimately be returned to receiving waters or to the land. The complex question of which contaminants in waste water must be removed to protect the environment and to what extent must be answered specifically for each case. The answer to this question requires analysis of local conditions and needs, together with the application of scientific knowledge, engineering judgment based on past experience and consideration of national environment quality standards (N.E.Q.S). The object of this study is to analyst the performance parameters of the treatment plant. Keeping in view the above factors, five parameters were selected which includes physical, chemical and biological characteristics. Sampling and analysis were done carefully in concerned laboratories over the period of one month in July 1998. The results have indicated that the parameters of concern like BOD»COD and Suspended solids have significant reduction patterns at the side of treated water effluent. On the basis of collected data, laboratory analysis of all the sources and comparing these values with N.E.Q.S value, some conclusions were arrived at
EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF DENSITY, MODULUS OF RUPTURE AND FLEXURAL BEHAVIOUR OF LOCAL TIMBER
This paper presents the experimental study conducted to determine density, modulus of rupture and flexural behaviour of eight types of local timber: Dayal, Mango, Cheel, Talhi, Neem, Chilghozo, Paltar and Babool. in all 56 specimen were tested; thirty two cubes for the determination of density while twenty four beams were tested to study the flexural behaviour and modulus of rupture. All the beams tested were simply supported and were loaded with single point load centrally applied. The behaviour was studied in terms of Load-Displacement history, Strain measurements at various stages of the loading and ultimate load. The results show that almost all the varieties of local timber exhibit linear behaviour. The density and modulus of rupture values are well comparable with the alien woods
CHARACTERISTICS OF AQUIFER NEAR NAUSHERO-FEROZ
Tube-well hydraulic data pertaining to Naushero Feroz area is analysed. Simple, but approximate formula for the estimation of Well Function has been developed and Jacob's drawdown formula has been slightly modified. Storage coefficient and Transmissibility have been estimated with standard methods viz Theis, Jacob and Chow Authors' methods of assessment for these parameters yield almost the same results for practical purposes
A PARAMETER AFFECTING DC BREAKDOWN OF CONTAMINATED INSULATORS
Effect of ambient temperature simulating different weather conditions throughout the year has been investigated for insulators of different shapes under both polarities of applied direct voltage. The study revealed that for a given salinity of contamination solution, the equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) is strongly dependent on ambient temperature. This has been attributed to the change of solution viscosity. DC breakdown strength reduces by about 0.7% per degree Centigrade rise in temperature. DC arc characteristics are, however, independent of temperature. The observed temperature dependence of DC flashover voltage has been attributed exclusively to the change of residual resistance and a good agreement exists between the calculated and measured values. The influence of polarity in contamination flashover is equally effective throughout the investigated temperature range
