    EFFECT OF POLYMER ADDITION IN COLLECTOR-FROTHER REAGENT MIXTURE ON COAL FLOTATION

      The objective of this coal flotation experimental investigation was to examine the effects of polymer when 15% of it was added to a reagent mixture composed of collector-frother in different percentages. It was observed that the polymer addition increased the other hand, higher % ash content was also found when compared to polymer free collector-frother reagent mixture. A decreased value of flotation rate constant was noticed which in turn resulted in decreased efficiency of coal flotation. It may be concluded that polymer acted as collector and even made some slime particles hydrophobic which were collected as froth concentrate. &nbsp

    EFFECT OF COOLING RATE AND AUTENT1ZING TEMPERATURE ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF COMMERCIAL STEELS

    The effect of grain size and cooling rates on the mechanical properties of two grades of steels has been followed after heating to 910, 950 and 1000°C. In ferrite/pearlire steels of carbon contents (0.217 c and 0.287 c ), increasing austenitizing temperature and furnace cooling did not affect either the grain size or the mechanical properties. This has been mainly due to the pinning effect of Nb, Al and Mn contents. While the cooling rate of 25°C/min refines the grain size by 3 mm^- 1/2 for 0.21% and 1.5 mm^1/2 for 0.28% c carbon and improved the mechanical properties specially the strength upto 1.5 KN/mm^2

    The use of granite as a building and decorative stone is increasing day by day. In the surroundings of Peshawar basin, good outcrops of granites are exposed. In order to determine the suitability of granitic rocks of Peshawar basin to be used as building or decorative stones, petrographic and geotechnical studies were carried out on rock samples collected from Shewa Shabaz Garhi, Ambela, Bagh, Utla and Malakand. Based on the present investigations the studied samples were found to be within the recommended valuesof American Standards of Testing Materials (ASTM) for the use of building and decorative purposes

    Sediment routing in rivers can be described in terms of three one dimensional equations; the Saint Venant continuity and dynamic equiations of motion, and sediment mass balance. The solution of these equations requires two supplementary relationships for frictional slope and sediment transport. These equations contain empirical constants in one form or the other which are difficult to determine. One of the methods of determining the constants in a particularsituation is to optimise on observed river data. The optimisation techniques for the identification of sediment routing parameters need the field data which may have some errors. The data subject to errors can affect the optimised parameters. The effect of different types of errors on the optimised parameters are studied in this paper. In this study a novel coupled linear implicit method is used to solve the sediment routing equations and the sediment routing parameters are identified by using the gradient techniques of optimisation

    Sugarcane crop is grown in NWFP, in particular and in Pakistan in general. As regard to area under cultivation, Pakistan ranks fourth among sugar producing countries of the world. In Pakistan, average yields (38 t/ha) is lowest compare to other countries like India (56.9 t/ha), Mexico (50.9 t/ha), U.S.A (86.3 t/ha), Australia (79.0 t/ha) and Indonesia (89 t/ha). The main cause for this low yield among others is the absence of an effective and appropriate sugarcane planting machine. As such, a fully tractor drawn sugarcane planter was designed and developed at the Agricultural Engineering department of NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan to mechanize labor intensive operations of opening of furrow, dropping of billets (sets) and covering (of billets) in the process of sugarcane planting. Keeping in view these basic facts a single row experimental model of sugarcane planter operated by a 50 hp tractor was fabricated and tested in the fields of Malakandare farm of NWFP Agricultural University. It was observed, that on the average there was a net saving of Rs. 690/- per hectare in sugarcane planting operation compared to the conventional system of sugarcane planting

    DETERMINATION OF ROUGHNESS COEFFICIENT FOR WATERCOURSE DESIGN

    Manning's roughness coefficient was evaluated for three water courses two lined (trapezoidal and rectangular concrete) and one in unlined condition. The derive values tended to be somewhat higher than those listed in available literature, because of small size of water courses and the tropical vegetation involved. A large variation of the coefficient depending on the channel conditions was evident. The results pointed out that moderate vegetation growth in earthen channels can increase the roughness coefficient causing increase in the depth of flow and thus increase the losses by 2 to 3 times. The study concluded that by cleaning water courses, roughness can be reduced and as a result the conveyance losses can be reduced significantly. Design roughness coefficient for concrete lined and earthen water courses are recommended as 0.014 and 0.035 respectively

    SHUNT COMPENSATION OF LONG DISTRIBUTION FEEDERS

    1-kV Primary Distribution feeders in Pakistan are stretched beyond their technical limits, causing serious voltage regulation and energy loss problems. The use of voltage regulation devices such as OLTCs (on Load Tap changers) AVRs (Automatic Voltage Regulators), LDCs (Line Drop compensators) etc. cannot control voltage dropproblem alone due to the upper limit of voltage for front end consumers. Shunt capacitors, however, offer very economical method of voltage control as well as loss reduction. Several methods for capacitor application have been presented so far, but many of those methods depend upon various assumptions which impose certain restrictions. Also the analytical representation of a practical feeder is not straight forward, as a radial feeder may comprise of several node points (distribution transformers) and many branches, therefore a general analysis method on a system wide basis is difficult to derive. Load Flow Studies, however, can very well be utilized to analyze such long radial feeders and apply shunt compensation in accordance with reactive current distribution. Also theL.F. studies allow us to observe the effect of this compensation on voltage profile and loss reduction. This paper presents an analysis of an abnormally long feeder through L.F. for both peak-load and off-peak-load conditions. Based on this, the reactive compensation level is determined. Six various cases of capacitor sizing and siting are studied to establish a method of capacitor application for maximum voltage regulation and loss reduction on long distribution feeders without violating voltage or power factor limits

    Alternative equivalent circuits of a single-phase induction motor are discussed and evaluated for predicting torque/speed characteristics of an experimental motor. Results of a new simplified equivalent circuit when compared with the complex model show sufficient accuracy. Since the simple equivalent circuit uses simple tests to determine its parameters and a simple computer program etc. , the equivalent circuit is justified for its future use
