COMPUTER NETWORKING IN ELECTRICALLY NOISY ENVIRONMENT
This paper discusses the interference phenomenon of computer cables loaded with a sequence of low energy binary signals in premises equipped with commissioned high power appliances. This is important from the point of public records and data security, as a low energy signal within a high power environment, may pose serious problems and result %in squeezing a ‘1’ out to become a ‘o’ or creeping a ‘1’ in to replace the second least significant ‘o’ in the ASCII value for the letter ‘A’ (0100 0001) to change it to the ASCII value for the letter ‘c’ (0100 0011). There are sound chances for such data files in a storing and retrieving system to get corrupted, resulting in a situation of less reliability. The situation may become more cumbersome when the data is being used for audio visual purposes.
This work presents a valuable technical report of great utility for commercial buildings, Government offices, hospitals and factories which are furnished with digital equipment connected through cables for binary signals and running side by side with those of high electric power cables
THE VARIABILITY OF COMPRESSION REINFORCEMENT WITH REGARD TO SHEAR STRENGTH OF REINFORCED CONCRETE CONTINUOUS T-BEAMS
his paper exclusively deals with an experimental study of the variability of compression reinforcement with regard to shear strength of reinforced concrete continuous T-beams with vertical stirrups. The tests were carried out ona series of T-beams, continuous over two spans of 3.0 meters each, with concrete compressive strength of 30 N/mm^2. The beams were loaded with one concentrated load at the centre of each span. The beams were designed in accordancewith the British code of practice, CP 110. The compression reinforcement was varied at the central support. The maximum area of the variablecompression reinforcement was 1.2 percent of the gross cross-sectional area of the concrete. In the region of variable compression reinforcement, the nominal shear reinforcement was reduced by 85.6 percent. All the experimental T-beamsfailed in shear compression, as expected. It was observed that the concrete compression zone of the T-beams failed due to shearing. The percentage of web reinforcement did not affect the initial cracking load of the concrete. Beams with longitudinal compression reinforcement greater than 1.0 percent, also exhibited the same phenomenon. It appeared that the percentage of web reinforcement as well as that of compression reinforcement had a major effect on the ultimate shearing strength of the beams. To investigate the relationship between percentage of compression reinforcement and shear stress, the experimental data points were fitted to four models. The parameter values of these models were estimated by a computer program. Almost all the curves obtained from the four models indicated that the shear stress increased if the percentage of compression reinforcement was increased
DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MODEL (POULTRY HOUSE) USING SOLAR ENERGY (AIR-TYPE) HEATING SYSTEM
To conserve fossil fuels and electricity and to introduce solar heating in poultry farms, a solar heating system was designed and named "Solar Energy Air-type Heating System " (SEAHS ).
To study SEAHS, a physical model was designed and developed. Heat loss and gain was selected as the variable of interest (dependent variable). Other effecting variables taken were chickens weight, volume [of model poultty house (MPH ), density of walls material, and velocity of air (inside MPH ). The model of SEAS designed was fabricated and installed for testing on the roof of Agricultural Engineering Department 's building.
The SEAHS model was tested and it was found that during the day time the SEAHS model 's performance was better since desired temperatures were obtained in MPH. However, during night time the desired temperatures were not constant in MPH , which was perhaps due to insufficient sealing of MPH or improper design of the heat storage unit
DEVELOPMENT OF A LABORATORY APPARATUS TO PREDICT SOIL EROSION BY FLOODING WATER
A laboratory apparatus was designed and developed to simulate the field conditions of soil structure, texture, and water potential, as well as field flooding and slope. The apparatus successfully duplicated water potential and field slope. Soil structure could not be duplicated precisely as it was difficult to disturb the soil from the field and still maintain original soil tilth conditions. Field conditions were simulated as closely as possible. However, the apparatus performed well in initial experiments. A decreased water potential yielded increase in shear strength of the soil. Tensiometer was successfully used to monitor soil water potential levels through the use of pressure transducer
FUZZY LINEAR PROGRAMMING AND ITS APPLICATION TO MAINTENANCE SCHEDULING OF GENERATING UNITS
In this paper we give a clear and detailed explanation of the concept of ‘decision’ in fuzzy optimization theory, how this concept is used to develop a model of fuzzy linear programming, how fuzzy and non- fuzzy or crisp objectives are included in the model and finally we employ the model of fuzzy 0-1 programming for developing a maintenance schedule for a series of generators
PREDICTION OF DRAINED BEHAVIOUR FROM THE UNDRAINED BEHAVIOUR OF CLAY SOIL
Consolidated undrained triaxial compression test results of Kaolin Clay were used to determine the critical state parameters of the same using Modified Cam Clay Model. They were then used to generate theoretical drained stressstrain data for the soil. The experimental drained stress-strain data of the soil was compared with the predicted theoretical drained stress-strain data of the same. Their comparison on a plot showed over estimation of drained shearstrength of the soil by the theoretical prediction method but both gave curves of similar shapes
SETTLEMENT PREDICTION VIA CRITICAL STATE MODEL
The Critical state model is introduced. Its use via finite element method hy using a critical state computer programme CRISP for prediction of ultimate settlement of a test fill on soft clay is demonstrated. The predictions are made at various depths under the fill. Settlements after 13 years are calculated and comparisons between the predicted and measured values are made. The comparisons indicate over estimation of settlement by CRISP
STUDY OF A PARTICULAR FORM OF INTEGRALS
In this paper we propose the evaluation of integrals of the form Im,n = Integral of Sin^mx/x^n dx,, where m and n are integers such that m greater than equal to n. Primitively, we examine the convergence and divergence of the integrals lα ,β where α and β are real numbers, and we prove that Iα,β are not absolutely convergent for all α . After that , we evaluate lm,n by derivation of the integrals for 1 ≤ m ≤ 4 ,1 ≤ n ≤ 4 and by recurrence for 1 ≤ m ≤ 7, 1 ≤ n ≤ 7 Finally, we use the residue theorem, when there are multiple poles on axis
URBANIZATION AND ITS IMPACTS ON RURAL-URBAN ECONOMIC INTEGRATION IN NWFP:
Urbanization generates agglomeration economies and is therefore, playing a very wide and vital role in integrating rural-urbaneconomies and in accelerating socio-economic development. The socio-economic analysis of urban centres in general, and in Peshawar specifically, revealed that urbanization generates public and social services, commercial and personal services, regional marketing and trade services, agro-processing and supplies services, regional transport and communications services, source of income remittances, and social services, intra and interregional/provincial services, internal and external economies, small scale industries, and socio-economic integration of rural-urban localities. A randomly selected multistage and cluster sampling method designed for the comparative socio-economic analysis of Peshawar and Bannu, elaborated that the significant characteristics of such urban centres could further strengthen rural-urban economic integration and could more favourably accelerate the pace of development in the region/province as well as in the country
SURFACE RUNOFF AND SOIL LOSS UNDER CROPPED FIELDS OF MEDIUM RAINFALL ZONE OF POTHWAR PLATEAU
Due to undulating topography, erratic rainfalls and lack of proper soil and water conservation practices there are appreciable amounts of surface flows and soil loss in rainfed areas. A field study on loess soil was conducted for a period of 3 years (1993-95) to determine the surface runoff and soil loss under wheat-maize cropping system in a medium rainfall zone. There was considerable variation in rainfall (C.V. 70%). Maximum amount of runoff was observed as 82% with an average value of 18% and coefficient of variation 128%. The maximum unit peak discharge observed was 251 Ips ha-1. It was observed that about 60% of the rainfall events generated less than 20% runoff
