MODIFIED SNYDER’S TIME BASE AND U.S ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS’ EQUATIONS FOR ESTIMATING SYNTHETIC UNIT HYDROGRAPHS IN UNGAUGED CATCHMENTS OF N. W.F.P. PAKISTAN
This paper describe an empirical method of deriving snyder’s time base and U.S Army corps of Engineers equations of synthetic unit hydrography for small catchments of N.W.F.P, using basin area (A), Peak discharge (qPR), time base (T), and width of observed unit hydrography at 25 % (W25), 50 % (W50), and 75 % (W75) of peak discharge. The data were extracted from unit hydrographs derived for nine catchments out of which six are located in Northern while three are situated in Southern region of N.W.F.P. The approach used is to take observed unit hydrographs from selected gauged basins and a relationship established between basin area and unit hydrographs characteristics, such as time base, peak discharge, W25, W50 and W75 of peak discharges. Snyder's Original parameters for time base and U.S Army corps of Engineers Equations for time width of synthetic unit hydrography at 50%, and 75 % of peak discharges were not found in line with the hydrological conditions of the catchments under study. These empirical equations have therefore been modified for local conditions
FAILURE ANALYSIS OF A GLUE-JOINTED ROOF TRUSS
The adequacy of glue as jointing material in timber construction in timber construction is examined when inherent uncertainties in the basic design variables are quantitatively considered . The evaluation procedure includes the characterization of the probability distribution function of the glued joint strength based on test results. Employing the Mean First-Order Reliability Method (MFORM ), failure probability levels of glued joints in a typical roof truss are estimated . The results obtained show that the failure of a glued joint largely depends on the variability in the grade stress, the angle at which a member is loaded as well as the member dimension. By comparison, the failure of a nailed joint under a given load level is about six times higher than for a glued joint
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TURBOCHARGER AERODYNAMIC TEST FACILITY AT THE N.W.F.P. UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
Details are given of a facility recently developed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the N.W.F.P. University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, whichis capable of testing a single-entry radial-inflow gas turbine under steady flow design and off-design conditions. Particular attention is given to equip the rig with modem instruments and controls to measure fluid flow parameters. Design of the various systems of the rig is described
AN APPRAISAL ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PESHAWAR SEWAGE
Analysis of Sewage Characteristics are made to determine those constituents that may cause problem in its treatment and disposal, to aid in selecting the correct type of treatment process, or to show the degree of pollution and progressof self purification of a body of water with view to investigate such aspect, this study is proposed for the city of Peshawar. The data on characteristics and flows which this study aims to investigate will be of assistance in the selection oftreatment process and for future expansion of sewerage system. For this purpose well known selected parameters for sewage and industrial waste will be investigated in accordance with Standard Methods including the sanitary survey. The mean BOD, COD and Suspended Solids for Peshawar sewage are obtained as 300 mg/l, 529 mg/l and 459 mg/lrespectively
A KNOWLEDGE BASED METHODOLOGY FOR THE PLANNING OF FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM
This paper presents a Knowledge Based Flexible Manufacturing System Planning ( KBFMSP ) methodology. The KBFMSP is one of the modules of Knowledge Based Flexible Manufacturing System Design ( KBFMSD ) which is able to design a complete FMS. The KBFMSP is an integrated model of demand information, part type information, machine information, material handling information and networking information. All of the sub models of the KBFMSP are mainly used for acquiring information (data and text) from the user. The KBFMSP methodology is developed using AM: an expert system shell
ESTIMATING TRAVEL DEMAND (TEHRAN’S UNDERGROUND SHARE IN PERSPECTIVE)
Estimating the demand for travel is a highly important part of the transportation planning process as travel demand, both existing and future, will have a major influence on transport policies and the provision of transport facilities. This paper presents a model which is a simplification of a realty. This simplification is obtained by describing a system in terms of the element considered most relevant to the situation under consideration. This selection representation enables studies in underground shares to be made of the likely effects of different policies and operational changes on the area and population concerned. The model also reflects all possible factors which effects people's choice in a way which closely matches behaviour
APPLICATION OF CORMIX MODEL TO THE THERMAL DISCHARGES FROM POWER STATIONS - A CASE STUDY
The behaviour of the thermal water discharge from Shannonbridge Power Station (Co. Offaly. Ireland) into the river Shannon was investigated using the CORMIX model. The flow rate and temperature data measured at low flow conditions in summer were used in this study. The water quality standard of 3 dgree celsius rise in ambient water temperature was used for thermal plume study. The geometry of thermal plume was simulated using different angle of discharge channel and bottom slope of the river near discharge channel. The results showed that the discharge channel geometry and depth of water at discharge point are important parameters. But the most effective parameter is the horizontal discharge angle i.e. the actual angle of discharge channel with the river ban downstream.lt affects both the temperature distribution and the mixing zone length. The water quality standard was obtained at a distance of 15.75 m downstream when horizontal angle of discharge was 20 degree . While the same standard was obtained in flow establishment zone (0.25 m downstream) with cross flow (i.e. with horizontal angle of discharge of 90 drgree ). It is ' proposed for Shannonbridge Power Station that the thermal water discharge from power station be normal to the downstream bank of river (cross flow). It is also suggested that define a regulatory mixing zone length of 20 m downstream in river. Shannon to keep it environmentally safe
COUNTER IONS EFFECT ON THE DISSOCIATION OF AMBERLITE IRC-50
Potentiometric titrations of loaded Amberlite IRC-50 containing Pt , Na+, Cu2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ were carried out in aqueous electrolyte solution at temperature 308 K. The curves revealed a complete desorption of the transition metal ions, when PH of the solution was lowered to 3. The dissociation constants of the resin had been determined from the potentiometric titration data and 308 K. The data were explained with the help of mass action law
AN APPLICATION OF FUZZY LINEAR PROGRAMMING TO EXPANSION PLANNING OF ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION
In this paper we have givenan example of optimizing generation by using the method of Fuzzy linear programming. Fuzzy quantities capture the uncertainties in the various variables of generation expansion.
This paper represents an effort in reverse engineering of one of the two classical Japanese works in the field of generation expansion planning.The programme was computer simulated using a standard optimization software and theresults obtained were identical to the results of the earlier papers
EFFECT OF COUNTER IONS ON THE UPTAKE OF AMMONIA BY A WEAK ACID EXCHANGER
The sorption of ammonia on the Cu2+ y Ni2+ and Zn2+ and Na+ loaded weak acid exchanger Amberlite IRC-50 was examined as a function of temperature and different initial concentrations. No uptake was observed by the Na+ form of the exchanger in all the cases. The sorption was found to increase with the decrease in temperature and an increase in concentration of ammonia. A detailed examination revealed that metal-ammonia complication is the mechanism responsible for the ammonia uptake by weak acid exchanger. Desorption data for the metals alsorevealed thatZn2+ and Ni2+ are held more strongly than Cu2+ on theAmerblite IRC-50. Thermodynamic parameters for the metal ligand complex were also computed. The negative A (7 values favoured the complex formation between the ammonia and metal ions inside the resin
