    EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ELASTIC RESPONSE OF I - BEAM BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE THEORETICAL STUDY AND ANALYTICAL MODELING

    Bridges are both critical and costly components of a transportation system and play key role in the development of a nation. Due to their strategic importance, they should be properly designed, constructed and maintained so as to allow uninterrupted flow of traffic during their design lives. Pakistan Code of Practice f or Highway Bridges has become obsolete as no amendments have been made in it since its publication in 1967. To study the behavior of bridge system and evaluate the code provisions, a prototype composite I-beam bridge superstructure, consisting of reinforced concrete deck slab supported by four steel girders, was selected and designed in accordance with the provisions of AASHTOP LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. A 1/6th reduced -scale model of selected bridge system was constructed in the laboratory, instrumented with strain gages and strain gage-based transducers, loaded with load cells, and its response was measured with the help of a data logger to static loads simulating AASHTO Design Truck. Numerical models of the bridge system were also developed in SAP2000 and their responses were compared with those obtained from the experiments. This paper covers selection of the bridge configuration, design of various components of the bridge superstructure,dimensional analysis carried our and the resulting similitude requirements, description and calibration of the testing facilities, and finite element modeling of the bridge superstructure

Merits of the method are sometimes exaggerated. There is no just justification for applying an approximate method where an exact solution is available, Also therecently developed homotopy analysis method produces a Maclaurin series with accelerated convergence

    This paper presents the experience gained through an experiment of assessing teaching quality using student feedback. The experiment was carried out in the Final Year Mechanical Engineering class at NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, in the recent past. Results of the experiment indicate that student feedback can form an important part of a comprehensive program of evaluation of courses and teachers with the aim of improving the, quality of engineering education in Pakistan.Details of the experiment and its results are presented. Some common concerns regarding the validity, usefulness and proper implementation of a program of student feedback are addressed and recommendations are made on designing an effective program of evaluation of teaching quality

    INTERCEPTOR DRAINS ALONG IRRIGATION CANALS

    Interceptor Drains were installed along three Canals of Fordwah Eastern Sadiqia (South) irrigation and Drainage Project. Ground watertable behaviour was observed before and after the installation of intercepror drains. Seepage rate of the canals was measured through ponding test method. The lithology of the area along the trial sites didn’t allow the interceptor drains to receive the expected design discharge. Measured seepage from the canals was much lower than originally envisaged at the time of design of interceptor drains. The measured discharge of interceptor drains was 31%, 47% and 82% of the design discharge at Malik Branch, Hakra Branch and 3-R Khatan Distributary respectively. The quality of the drained water was not too bad for reuse for irrigation after mixing with canal water. The interceptor drains could not significantly reduce the need of field drainage. Based on the results of trials conducted by IWASRI, main interceptor drain component of 280 km was dropped from the project. In this way, the results of the study have helped save unnecessary expenditure of approximately US $ 20 million (over Rs. 1000 million) allocated for installing interceptor drains in FESS Project. Moreover an additional amount of Rs. 25 million to be incurred annually for operation and maintenance has also been saved. Interceptor drains cannot be recommended as recharge reducing technology in flat areas without proper investigations and testing

    FARMERS IRRIGATION WATER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES OF MAIZE CROP

    The research study was conducted to monitor the water management practices for maize crop at outlet RD. 22630-L of Warsak Lift Canal irrigation system during Kharif, 1999. Fifteen fields were selected randomly; five each at head, middle and tail of the outlet. Soil physical properties, irrigation requirements, actual management allowed deficit (before irrigation) and water use efficiency were determined for the selected fields. Discharge was measured at the intakes of the selected fields and the time of application of water to each field was recorded. irrigation requirement of the selected fields were computed by FAO software program CROPWAT, using Tarnab meteorological station data. The total actual applied depth of water for the selected fields at head middle and tail of the outlet, ranged between 576.0-766.1 mm, 661.2-1056.1 mm and 565-769.5 mm respectively. The variation in depth of water applied was due to fluctuating discharge of the outlet, The gross irrigation requirements for the selected fields at head, middle and tail of the outlet ranged between 525.8-592.8 mm, 510.5-602.6 mm and 540.7-565.3 mm respectively. The change in gross irrigation requirement was due to different growth stages of maize crop. The actual management allowed deficit for the selected fields at head, middle and tail of the outlet ranged between 0.37 -043, 0.38 -0.45 and 0.31 -043 respectively. The variation in MAD was due to non-uniform frequency of irrigation. Water use efficiency of maize for the selected fields at head, middle and tail of the outlet ranged 2.52-3.62 kg/ha/mm, 2.97-4.21 kg/ha/mm and 3.81-4.43 kg/ha/mm respectively. The decrease in yield is due to improper irrigation and fertilization. The research study reveals that farmers were irrigating the maize crop without giving due consideration to the actual crop water requirements and actual management allowed deficit

    World-wide, safety professionals and researchers accept the fact that a major proportion of work-related accidents and injuries can be attributed to human failure. It is widely believed that training of employees at all levels is one of the best ways of ensuring a safe and productive workforce. It is also understood that injuries and accidents, besides bringing suffering to victims, produce considerable economic losses to employers. This paper reviews the trends of safety training and training in general with special emphasis on the mining industry. The new and emerging trends in safety training are also discussed. This study explores the extent of training in various countries and it is found that the mining industries in the Great Britain and the United States have achieved much improvement in terms of safety. &nbsp

    VLSI ARCHITECTURE OF ADVANCED INTRA CODING MODE FOR H.263+ VIDEO CODEC CORE

    ITU-T H.263+ is an extension of H.263 baseline. Its purpose is to broaden the range of applications and to improve the coding performance and error resilience. H.263+ has four modes. This paper describes the VLSI architecture of one mode i.e., advanced intra coding mode (AIC). Proposed module can select the most efficient prediction mode and has low complexity. Moreover, this method can make block-based pipelining possible, which is the deficiency of conventional method. Implementation results shows that proposed module can be implemented with low computational complexity

    REDUCTION OF HEAVY METALS IN REFINERY WASTE SLUDGE USING EM TREATMENT

    This paper presents the efforts of National Cleaner Production Center (NCPC) and Attack Refinery Limited (ARL) Rawalpindi, ta address the problem of refinery solid waste. A trial project was designed to treat and convert 1.7 m ton of oil sludge into environmental friendly residue (compost) under anaerobic conditions. The residue can be treated as biofertilizer for agricultural purpose. The trial on bio remediation (anaerobic) of oily sludge of ARL, Rawalpindi within its premises using EM technology was successfully completed with the collaboration of effective microorganism research organization (EMRO), NCPC and ARL between 29th October to 10th December, 2002. The effective microorganisms transformed the undiluted oily sludge from ARL into bioactive sludge; which may be called as biosludge. For heavy metal breakdown the trial data shows that Ba has been reduced by 85% in the EM. Treated oily sludge as compared to original ARL sludge, and Pb, Fe, Zn and Ni have been reduced by about 50% in the treated biosludge. The contents of As, Cr, Cu and Mn showed no change. The residue obtained can be used as a biofertilizer

    USE OF VOLCANIC ASH AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF CEMENT

    Pozzolanic reactivity, durability and optimal substitution of Volcanic Ash in concrete collected from Peshawar Basin are studied. It is concluded on the basis of compressive strength results and X-ray diffraction analysis that Volcanic Ash-I and II are reactive when used as such (i-e without heat treatment). Sulfate attack and water absorption decreases as the percentage substitution increases. Up to 40% substitution, Volcanic Ash gives satisfactory compressive strength result. Modulus of rupture of pozzolanic cement concrete is lower than cement concrete. A more detailed study is recommended to evaluate short and long term properties of ternary blend including comprehensive strength and durability

    Maintenance experts agree that replacing component/equipment before ¡t fails may, under certain circumstances, make better economic sense than replacing the component/equipment when if fails. The key is to determine whether the preventive maintenance replacement of specific component/equipment ¡s appropriate and if so, to identify the best time to replace it. Generally, maintenance is the area where sound management principles are still largely ignored in Afam Power Station, hence maintenance productivity is very low and the associated costs of repair/replacement as a percentage of total cost continue to increase. Therefore, power plants/auxiliaries in the station are facing big repair/replacement cost challenges. In order to improve the PM activities, an optimum replacement time of plants/equipment was conducted. A net present value was used in order to determine the optimum time of pump replacement as a case study. Based on this study, several actions and strategies are suggested to reduce complex problems and implications, one of which is to use proactive maintenance strategy for long-term strategy
