A STRATEGY FOR DEVELOPING THE PROTOTYPE SOFTWARE TO MONITOR THE CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
In today‘s construction industry, information and automation technology must be viewed as potential resources. Computer Integrated Construction (CJC) is an emerging technology, and it an approach to assist construction firms respond lo the difficult environment in which they are operating. A strategy for implementing CIC during the llfe cycle of the project especially at the construction stage should be formulated and promoted for application in the construction industry. To demonstrate the concept of CIC during the construction stage, a prototype system namely Automated Construction Project Monitoring (ACPROM) was introduced to investigate integration problems. This system presents a way of approaching the CIC. The ACPROM model is part of developing the Tele-Construction base site management system. which show the status of work in progress and develop the actual progress chart of work. The objective of this paper is to present a prototype model and to outline future research plan to monitor the physical progress of the construction site. By introducing ACPROM model, it allows the resident engineer, project manager, construction manager, and site manager to develop the physical progress of site, analyze physical progress reports and helps in decision making. Although the prototype model is not established as a comprehensive system still, it may be viewed as a strategy towards the digitalizing the construction stage
STRESS ANALYSIS OF A MAJOR LOAD BEARING FRAME OF MEDIUM WEIGHT AIRCRAFT USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD
Stress analyses of major load bearing frame of a medium weight aircraft for multiple load and boundary conditions are presented here. One out of three wing attachments and landing gear shaft is connected to this frame. The loads transferred from these components to the fuselage through this frame are very high thus there is a need to carry out a detailed and comprehensive stress analyses calculation of this frame under all critical load conditions. Three applied load cases for seven different boundary conditions (wing reaction forces and moments for various flight conditions) were considered for calculating the resulting stresses. Effects of longerons and aircraft skin were simulated by applying appropriate boundary conditions to the frame. Both tabular and graphical results are presented which show that in most of the regions of the frame, the resulting stresses due to applied load is less than max allowable stress. In high stressed areas, the valuedoes not exceed the maximum allowable stress. Commercially available finite element software ANSYS® was used for this work
VLSI ARCHITECTURE OF BLOCK EDGE FILTER FOR H.263+ CODEC
This paper describes the VLSI architecture of deblocking filter, which is a part of H.263+ video codec. H.263+ is ITU-T standard defined in 1998, with 12 modes, which are divided in three levels and deblocking filter is placed in level one. H263 ¡s block based coding scheme, which results in block noise and artifacts produces during coding process. The main purpose of proposed filter module is to reduce the artifacts produced by blocking noise. Proposed architecture reduces the hardware cost by reusing the intermediate results and computations efficiently. Furthermore a new proposed scheme for filter memory reduces the overhead for DMA access and also results in significant reduction of filter memory size. Implementation results are shown to demonstrate that filter module can be Implemented by adding small area to the baseline H.263 codec core
STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROCESS IN PAKISTAN
Pakistan has recently introduced the Environmental 1m pact Assessment (EIA) process in developmental schemes through out the country. An ElA strategy has been presented in this paper for future developmental work to improve environmental situation in the country. In this strategy emphasis is given to public participation and consultation in decision-making process, monitoring and auditing of environmental projects.Public involvement in E/A process is an effective technique for improving decision-making. Different proposals for screening, scoping, initial environmental examination (IEE), E/A report preparation and mitigation measures for new project activities are discussed in detail. This proposed E/A system has unique characteristics, based on Pakistani socioeconomic, and cultural approach and its implementation in a proper way can be compared well with any EIA system in neighboring countries as well as at global level
INFLUENCE OF TILLAGE PRACTICES AND NITROGEN FERTILIZER RATES ON ROOT-LENGTH DENSITY, ROOT DRY WEIGHT AND MAIZE GRAIN YIELD
Field studies on a Typic Haplustalf soil complex were conducted for three years during 1997 - 1999 in Nigeria on maize (Zea mays L.) yield. The effects of five tillage systems were assessed (viz, ridging with arara (an oxen-drawn, light-weight tool carrier,) ridger (TI), ridging with emcot (an oxen-drawn, heavy-weight tool carrier) ridger (T2,), mouldboard ploughing followed by disc harrowing and ,mouldboard ridging (T3), disc ploughing followed by disc harrowing and disc ridging (T4), and manual ridging (T5) as a control. A factorial experiment with five tillage practices as horizontal treatments, four nitrogen rates as vertical treatments, and two planting methods as sub-plot treatments in four replications were conducted over three years (1997 -1999).
Results from this 3-year field study indicate that soil water content was only influenced by tillage treatments but not by other factors. The variation in volumetric soil water contents at seedling emergence, anthesis and physiological maturity with tillage treatments indicates that maize used different amount of soil water at these stages. The mean penetration resistance (1.4 MPa) at T4 plots was significantly lower than the mean penetration resistance of 3.5, 2.8, 2.6 and 2.9 MPa at T1, T2, T3 and T5 plots, respectively. Theinteractions of tillage treatment x nitrogen fertilizer rates significantly (PO≤0.05) affected the root-length density and root dry weight. Increase in N fertilizer rate (upto 120 kg ha-1) reduced root dry weight but increased root-length density of maize in 0-to 30-cum, soil layer
DYNAMIC FEEDBACK CONTROLLER FOR LEADER-FOLLOWER APPROACH FOR UNICYCLE ROBOTS
In this work, the leader-follower control problem for Unicycle is solved by using Full-state linearization via dynamic feedback. This approach has certain advantages over the well known input-output linearization. Simulation results verify the validity and limitation of these controllers by Matlab
DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR LOAD TRANSFER MECHANISM OF COLUMN-SLAB JOINTS
The current research describes the test results of eight RC columns with ,properly modeled confinement conditions. The experimental program was carried out to investigate the effects of normal strength concrete (NSC) slab layer on high strength concrete (HSC) columns. The specimens consisted of six interior columns,one sandwich column, and one isolated column made completely of HSC. Interior and sandwich column specimens had a 120-240 mm NSC slab layers at mid height while the isolated column specimen had no such layer. The available test data was analyzed to find the appropriate/actors affecting the joint strength behavior. The effects of slab load intensity, joint aspect ratio, slab reinforcement ratio, and surrounding slab confinement on the strength and ductility of the column-slab joints were profoundly investigated
NON-POLYNOMIAL A QUADRATIC SPLINE METHOD FOR THE SECOND-ORDER SINGULARLY PERTURBED BOUNDARY-VALUE PROBLEMS
We consider a difference scheme based on quadratic non-polynomial spline function for second-order singularly perturbed boundary-value problem of the form€y”=p(x)y’+q(x)y+r(x), y(a)=αoy(b)=αi.The method is shown to have second and fourth-order convergence depending on the choice of parameters α, ß involved in the method. The method is tested on an example and she results found to be in agreement with theory
FACTORS AFFECTING ENERGY-BILLS AND ENVIRONMENTAL-ILLS IN TRANSPORT SECTORS
A countrywide study was conducted to know the fuel consumptions and smoke opacities of diesel operated commercial vehicles. For this purpose, 150 commercial trucks and 50 urban wagons of different models, vintage groups operating under variety of road conditions and topography before and after tune up were studied. This project was carried out in two phases i.e. before tune up and after Tune up. Results show that fuel can be saved up lo 40.1% and emissions of pollutant gases can be reduced for both types of vehicles with proper tune up. Other parameters identified as responsible for deteriorating condition of the vehicles and high consumption rate of fuel are lack of proper education for drivers and helpers, poor road condition throughout the country, improper inspection and maintenance of machines, and lack of implementation of existing rules and regulations in true letter and spirit
EFFECT OF OPERATING PARAMETERS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF REVERSE OSMOTIC MEMBRANE
Water treatment is an area of global concern, various methods are in practice for treating water for industrial and domestic use. Reverse Osmosis is one of the modern methods to achieve this goal. The awareness of this approach and the operating parameters are of interest. Present work is focused on the development of an experimental facility to investigate the effect of operating parameters for the optimal operation of reverse osmosis membrane. Spiral Wound TFM-50 membrane was used in the experimental rig. The effects of dissolved solids, pressure and flow rate were studied. It is concluded that in the range of 50-60 psi operating pressure the salt rejection and permeate recovery was higher. Hence the most optimum operating pressure is in the range of 50-60 psi for TFM-50
