    FACE DETECTION AND FACIAL FEATURE LOCALIZATION USING NOTCH BASED TEMPLATES

    We present a real time detection of faces from the video with facial feature localization as well as the algorithm capable of differentiating between the face/non-face patterns. The need of face detection and facial feature localization arises in various application of computer vision, so a lot of research is dedicated to come up with a real time solution.The algorithm should remain simple to perform real time whereas ¡t should not compromise on the challenges encountered during the detection and localization phase, keeping simplicity and all challenges i.e. algorithm invariant to scale, translation, and (±45) rotation transformations. The proposed system contains two parts, visual guidance and face/non-face classification. The visual guidance phase uses the fusion of motion and color cues to class4fy skin color. Morphological operation with union-structure component labeling algorithm extracts contiguous regions. Scale normalization is applied by nearest neighbor interpolation method to avoid the effect of different scales. Using the aspect ratio of width and height size, Region Of Interest (ROI) is obtained and then passed to face/non-face classifier. Notch (Gaussian) based templates/filters are used to find circular darker regions in ROI. The classified face region is handed over to facial feature localization phase, which uses YCbCr eyes/lips mask for face feature localization.The empirical results show an accuracy of 90% for five different videos with 1000 face/non-face patterns and processing rate of proposed algorithm is 15 frames/sec

    RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF CRANE GIRDERS AT ULTIMATE LIMIT STATE

    Reliability analysis of structural behavior of crane girders based on BS5950’ is carried out at the ultimate limit state (ULS). The calculations are made by means of the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) while the variables relating to geometry, material and loading are considered random. The estimated reliability indices are compared for the different surge and wheel loads at varying design spans and wheel centers. It was shown that BS5950 design is fairly consistent considering the bending failure criterion, and more effective at lower wheel loads and large wheel centers when shear failure criterion is considered

    FLOTATION PROCESS CONTROL MODELING THROUGH STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR ENRICHMENT OF COPPER IN PAKISTAN

    This paper gives an insight into the effect of process parameters on the recovery of copper of the North Waziris ran (Pakistan). The study is based on the primary daid with seven important variables. i. e. type and dosage of collector (X,gms/t on), PH (X2), depressant sodium cyanide (X3 gms/ton), sulfidizer NaS(X4 gms/Ion), froher dosage (X gms/ton), pulp density (X6 w/v) and conditioning lime (X, minute). Thirty-one experimental tests were conducted by the Department of Mining Engineering NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar. Flotation process parameters were studied to concentrate the copper content î. e. chalocopyrite of North Wazirisian copper ore. Mathematical models were developed by applying Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method for regression analysis and adopted general to simple modeling procedure. In this study we found that the variables X1. X3, X4 and X6 of equation (3) are statistically significant and concluded that with an increase in these variables there is increase in recovery of copper

    EFFECTS OF EL-NINO/SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (ENSO) ON RAINFALL CHARACTERISTICS IN MAIDUGURI NIGERIA

    Rainfall characteristics during ENSO were investigated. The annual amount, onset date, termination date and duration of the rainy season, the number of wet and dry days, August rain characteristics were compared between the ENSO years, la-Nina years and normal years over a period of 31 years (1972-2002).In ENSO years he rainfall amount is lower than the long term mean, onset is late and the termination of the rainy season is earlier than the normal years. Duration is shorter. August rainfall is lower in ENSO years. Generally, ENSO years particularly 1972/73 and 1982/83 coincided with drought years in the area. Since there is some empirical relationship between ENSO and rainfall in Maiduguri it would be possible to predict extreme rainfall events like drought if the periodicity of ENSO can be understood

    ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF HARMINE, HgCl2 AND THEIR COMPLEX

    Harmine and its mercury (II)-complex were isolated from seeds of Peganum harmala by an already reported method (Munir et al. 1995) and studied for their antibacterial activity against ten different species of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. For comparative studies, pure sample of mercury-(II)-chloride salt was also subected lo antibacterial tests with he same species of bacteria under similar conditions. Results indicated that harmine had no effect on all the bacteria tested. Mercury(II)-chloride and mercury-harmine complex were found to be effective towards all the ten species of bacteria at both the levels except Pseudomonas aeroginosa, which was resistant to mercury (II)-chloride. Results also indicated that both Mercury(II) chloride and mercurv-harmine complex were more effective at higher dose of 200 µg/100 µl, with mercury-harmine complex being two to three times more effective than mercury(ll)-chloride

    EFFECT OF LAND USE ON RUNOFF AND EROSION AT HILKOT WATERSHED (MANSEHRA)

    The study was conducted on runoff and erosion losses at Hilkot watershed, Mansehra, N. W. F. P, Pakistan, from January to December 1999. Main objective of the study was to determine runoff and erosion losses from four different land uses (I. e. on degraded, pasture, forest and agriculture plots), and to develop rainfall-runoff and runoff-soil loss relationships. All land use plots had same size (100-m2) but different plant cover, slope and soil texture. A collection system consisting of four drums was installed at the end of each land use plot to monitor runoff and erosion. Runoff and erosion samples were taken after every rainfall event. Results showed a strong relationship between rainfall and runoff on all land use plots. Higher rainfall-runoff relationship (R2= 0.62) was found in case of agriculture plot. In runoff-soil loss relationship resulting value of R2 (0.93 to 0.96) shows that there is a strong relationship between runoff and soil erosion on all plots. On degraded plot maximum 96% variability can be explained by runoff Maximum total soil loss (4.66 t/ha) was found on degraded erosion plot and minimum (0.30 t/ha) on pasture plot. Similarly, annual runoff was highest (756m 3/ha) in degraded land and minimum (226m/ha) in pasture land. &nbsp

    MODIFICATION AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF CONVENTIONAL WHEAT THRESHER FOR RAPESEED IN PAKISTAN

    Conventional Wheat Thresher (MCWT; Model 1999) was modified to adopt it for rapeseed threshing. The Thresher was tested on Canola type Rapeseed variety; Hybrid- 19 at farmer ‘s field. The thresher was operated at three different cylinder peripheral speeds; 500, 550 and 600 rpm for three different crop moisture levels; 22%, 18% and 14%. The thresher performed best with cylinder peripheral speed of 550 rpm and crop moisture level 22%; at which the threshing capacity was 372 kg per hour with a threshing efficiency of 99.6% and fuel consumption of 4.6 liters per hour; while, the total machine loss and grain damage was 0.3% and 0.2%,respectively. The field performance of modified thresher was compared with traditional system i. e. tractor treading followed by winnowing, in terms of grain loss, labour requirement and economics of operation. The total grain loss and labour requirement in mechanical system were observed as 0.3% and 13 man-hrs per tonne as compared to traditional system where these were 12% and 102 man-hrs per tonne, respectively. Total cost for mechanical threshing was found to be Rs. 969 per tonne of output as compared to Rs. 2065 for traditional threshing

    EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ELASTIC RESPONSE OF I - BEAM BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE THEORETICAL STUDY AND ANALYTICAL MODELING

    Bridges are both critical and costly components of a transportation system and play key role in the development of a nation. Due to their strategic importance, they should be properly designed, constructed and maintained so as to allow uninterrupted flow of traffic during their design lives. Pakistan Code of Practice f or Highway Bridges has become obsolete as no amendments have been made in it since its publication in 1967. To study the behavior of bridge system and evaluate the code provisions, a prototype composite I-beam bridge superstructure, consisting of reinforced concrete deck slab supported by four steel girders, was selected and designed in accordance with the provisions of AASHTOP LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. A 1/6th reduced -scale model of selected bridge system was constructed in the laboratory, instrumented with strain gages and strain gage-based transducers, loaded with load cells, and its response was measured with the help of a data logger to static loads simulating AASHTO Design Truck. Numerical models of the bridge system were also developed in SAP2000 and their responses were compared with those obtained from the experiments. This paper covers selection of the bridge configuration, design of various components of the bridge superstructure,dimensional analysis carried our and the resulting similitude requirements, description and calibration of the testing facilities, and finite element modeling of the bridge superstructure

    Computer Graphics (CG) is a key technology for producing visual contents. Currently computer generated imagery techniques are being developed and applied, particularly in the field of virtual reality applications, film production, training and flight simulators, to provide total composition of realistic computer graphic images. Clouds are an integral feature of the sky without them synthetic outdoor scenes seems unrealistic. Modeling and animating clouds is a difficult task. Most systems are difficult to use, as they require adjustment of numerous, complex parameters, and are non-interactive. This paper presents an intuitive, interactive system to artistically model, animate, and render visually convincing clouds using modern graphics hardware. A high-level interface - RekAwan, models clouds through the visual use of cubes. The resulting interactive design produces perceptually convincing cloud models that can be used in any interactive system
