The Effectiveness of Mandatory Curriculum Courses in Promoting Students' Civic Engagement in Higher Education

    Get PDF
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Mandatory Curriculum Courses (Mata Kuliah Wajib Kurikulum or MKWK) in fostering civic engagement among university students. While previous research has emphasized the role of civic education in shaping character and social awareness, limited studies have specifically explored the contribution of MKWK as part of a national curriculum policy to enhancing civic engagement, particularly in technical and vocational higher education institutions. This study addresses this research gap by focusing on the implementation of MKWK in three different universities: ITB, POLBAN, and Telkom University. A quantitative approach was employed, using a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire distributed to active students from each institution. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation to determine the relationship between MKWK and civic engagement, as well as simple linear regression to assess the level of contribution. The results indicate that students' perceptions of MKWK fall into the very high category, with the majority assigning scores in categories 5 and 4. These findings are supported by statistical analysis, showing a significant relationship between MKWK implementation and increased civic engagement, as indicated by a tvalue of 15.883—far exceeding the critical ttable value of 1.652. Regression analysis reveals that MKWK contributes 56.3% to students' political participation, collective action, and community service. These results suggest that experiential and socially interactive learning approaches within MKWK play a crucial role in strengthening civic engagement in higher education settings. Keywords: civic engagement, MKWK, higher education, student participatio

This study aims to analyse the influence of the relevance of economic education on the needs of the world of work, specifically among alumni of the Economic Education Study Programme at Gunung Jati Swadaya University. The background to this study is based on the challenges of the era of digitalisation and industrial transformation, which require university graduates to have competencies that match the needs of the job market. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The sample in this study consists of 40 alumni selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument, a questionnaire, was distributed online and tested for validity and reliability before analysis. Data analysis techniques used include simple linear regression tests, correlation tests, determination coefficients, and significance tests (t-tests). The results of the study indicate that the relevance of economic education has a positive and significant effect on the needs of the job market, with a correlation coefficient of 0.737 and an R Square of 0.543, meaning that 54.3% of the job market needs are explained by this variable. This occurs with the rejection of H0 and the acceptance of Ha because the significance value of 0.000 is less than 0.05. This study combines Human Capital Theory and Job Matching Theory, demonstrating that relevant education can enhance graduates' readiness to face modern industrial challenges, contributing theoretically to understanding the relationship between education, skills, and work readiness. The findings emphasize the importance of developing competency-based curricula aligned with industrial needs, strengthening soft and hard skills, and optimising practical and internship programs such as MBKM. Sharia Economic Law Analysis of Paylater Features in Online Marketplace Transactions

    Get PDF
The advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed buying and selling systems, particularly through online marketplace platforms. One notable innovation is the paylater payment scheme, which allows consumers to defer payments after completing transactions. While this method offers practical convenience, it raises critical concerns from the perspective of Sharia economic law, especially regarding the elements of riba (interest), gharar (uncertainty), and transactional justice. This study aims to analyze the implementation of paylater features in the Hijabequlla marketplace by examining their compliance with Sharia economic principles. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observation, interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that although the paylater scheme facilitates online purchases, its current implementation shows potential violations of Sharia provisions—particularly those outlined in the DSN-MUI Fatwa No. 1 of 2004 concerning interest-based transactions. The novelty of this research lies in its contextual analysis of a contemporary marketplace platform using the framework of Islamic economic law, offering insights into the alignment—or misalignment—between digital consumer financing and Sharia norms. The study concludes that a reconstruction of the paylater system is needed to ensure compliance with Islamic legal standards, thereby promoting fair and ethical digital transactions. Keywords: Marketplace; Paylater; DSN-MUI Fatwa; Digital Transactions; Sharia Economic Law

    Get PDF
The use of cryptocurrencies as a payment instrument is an interesting social phenomenon to discuss. The use of cryptocurrencies as an official payment instrument is still prohibited by Bank Indonesia, but the use of cryptocurrencies continues to grow in Indonesia. BI limits the use of cryptocurrencies only as assets to be invested, not as legal tender. This research aims to analyze the law of cryptocurrency as a payment instrument from the perspective of economic fiqh. The data analysis technique in this study uses a qualitative analysis method that is descriptive-analytical. The researcher analyzed the suitability of the characteristics of cryptocurrency as a payment instrument with the principles of economic fiqh. A conceptual approach is used to explain the concept of cryptocurrency and a normative-theological approach is used to relate the concept to the provisions of Islamic law. The results of the study show that cryptocurrencies can, in principle, be recognized as objects of legal ownership (maal mutaqawwam) in Islam because they have value, can be owned and transferred. Cryptocurrencies can be used as a medium of exchange in Islam on a limited basis, if their use complies with Sharia principles: it is done transparently, free from speculation and usury, and supported by legitimate authorities and systems that guarantee clarity of value and security of transactions. This research emphasizes the importance of developing regulations that are adaptive to digital financial technology, as well as the need to emphasize transparency and avoidance of practices that are contrary to Islamic economic principles. Keywords: Cryptocurrency; Economic Fiqh; Payment Instrument

    Get PDF
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT, into higher education has sparked critical discussions about its role in supporting students’ academic writing, especially in enhancing logical reasoning—a fundamental component of scholarly discourse. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in fostering students’ ability to construct coherent and well-reasoned arguments in academic contexts. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research involved 25 undergraduate students from an English Education Program with prior experience using AI writing tools. Data were collected through surveys, semi-structured interviews, and comparative analysis of student writing with and without ChatGPT assistance. Quantitative analysis revealed a high adoption rate of ChatGPT for tasks such as argument structuring, idea generation, and proofreading. Qualitative findings highlighted that student perceived significant improvements in clarity, coherence, and logical flow when using AI tools. Thematic analysis identified key benefits, including real-time feedback, diversified perspectives, and enhanced writing fluency. However, students also expressed concerns about over-reliance, superficial reasoning, and diminished originality. Comparative analysis showed that AI-assisted essays demonstrated greater structural coherence but required manual refinement for complex reasoning. While ChatGPT provided consistent and immediate feedback, human instructors were valued for their depth, contextual insight, and critical engagement. Limitations included the AI’s lack of deep comprehension, occasional inaccuracies, and generic responses, especially regarding nuanced topics. Students adopted strategies such as cross-checking AI outputs, integrating peer reviews, and limiting AI use to early writing stages to maintain academic integrity. In conclusion, while ChatGPT serves as a valuable supplementary tool for enhancing logical reasoning in academic writing, its effectiveness depends on critical engagement and balanced integration with traditional pedagogical approaches. The findings underscore the need for informed policies and ethical frameworks to guide responsible AI use in higher education
