Urban Air Pollution in the Global South : A Never-Ending Crisis?
Among the challenges the human population needs to address are threats of global pandemics, increasing socioeconomic inequality, especially in developing countries, and anthropogenic climate change. The latter's effect has been amplified with the arrival of 2023/24 El Ni & ntilde;o, causing an exceptional drought in the Amazon basin, significantly affecting fire conditions and hydroelectric power production in several South American countries, including Ecuador. This study analyzes five criteria pollutants-carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), and particulate matter <= 2.5 mu m (PM2.5)-during 2019-2024 in Quito, Ecuador, a high-elevation tropical metropolis. Despite long-term efforts to regulate emissions, air pollution levels continue to rise, driven by overlapping crises, including energy shortages, political unrest, and extreme weather events. The persistent failure to improve air quality underscores the vulnerability of developing nations to climate change-induced energy instability and the urgent need for adaptive, diversified, and resilient future energy planning. Without immediate shifts in climate adaptation policies, cities like Quito will continue to experience worsening air quality, with severe implications for public health and environmental sustainability
The Importance of Pseudorandom Number Generator (PRNGs) in Cryptography and Their Security Implications : Security Vulnerabilities in Pseudorandom Number Generators
Pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) are fundamental components in cryptographic systems, where secure and unpredictable randomness is essentialfor tasks such as key generation and authentication. However, developers often use PRNGs without a full understanding of their limitations and potential security vulnerabilities, which can result in critical weaknesses. This study aims to explore how developers can ensure the use of secure PRNGs, and to identify best practices and existing guidelines for avoiding weak implementations. To address this objective, the study combines a literature review with practical experiments. A selection of PRNG libraries available in Python was evaluated in terms of entropy and statistical randomness. All tests were carried out in controlled virtual environments with uniform system configurations. Two primary methods were employed: NIST SP 800-90B to assess entropy, and Dieharder to evaluate statistical properties. Generators like secrets, ssl_rand_bytes, and os.urandomyielded entropy values close to the theoretical maximum, while simpler libraries such as random and numpy.random produced results closer to the lower acceptable limit. Nonetheless, none of the tested generators passed the full battery of Dieharder tests. The findings indicate that high entropy alone is not sufficient to ensure security. Even cryptographically secure PRNGs (CSPRNGs) may fail under comprehensive statistical testing, particularly under prolonged or intensive use. This underscores the importance of selecting the right PRNG based on the specific application and highlights the need for correct seed management and periodic entropy reseeding. To ensure robustness, developers should adhere to established standards like NIST SP 800-90A/B and comply with regulatory frameworks such as the NIS2 directive and recommendations from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency(MSB). In conclusion, the most reliable approach involves combining a vetted CSPRNG with a validated entropy source. Generic PRNGs should be strictly avoided insecurity-sensitive scenarios. Generiska PRNG bör undvikas i säkerhetskritiska sammanhang.
Francesco Negri and Nordic Medicine
In the seventeenth century – a period marked by significant explorations and scientific advancements – the priest Francesco Negri from Ravenna embarked alone on a journey to Scandinavia, motivated by a desire to document its curiosities. Driven by a pronounced scientific spirit, the Italian priest observed not only the natural phenomena of the Nordic regions, but also the customs and practices of the local populations. He later recorded his reflections in the Viaggio Settentrionale, a travel account published posthumously. The objective of this study is to conduct a thematic and comparative analysis of Negri’s work, with the aim of elucidating the function of medical observations and descriptions within the broader narrative framework. At the same time, the analysis seeks to position these accounts in relation to the prevailing medical theories of the Seventeenth century, highlighting potential convergences, divergences, or original reinterpretations.
Matematik</p
Foreign language perceptual curiosity : construct, measurement, and applications
Learning a language is a creative process. It involves novelty and imagination. While curiosity can be highly beneficial, research is limited. Studies so far conducted have explored epistemic curiosity as a trait-like disposition. In contrast, the current study focuses on perceptual curiosity (PC). PC is a situational response evoked by novelty, complexity and ambiguities in sensory stimulation. PC generates attention and prompts visual inspection and discovery. The purpose of the study was to develop a scale to measure PC in the context of foreign language learning. The scale was administered to a sample of 208 upper secondary students in Sweden learning a foreign language (French, German or Spanish). Reliability was assessed and validation procedures were conducted. Results of confirmatory factor analysis revealed a one-factor structure, indicating that the FLPC scale captures a unitary phenomenon. In future research using the FLPC scale, adaptation to fit contextual circumstances, and ongoing validation are highlighted. The broader value of PC is also considered. Three areas of applied linguistics are identified: (a) younger children's encounters, (b) orientations in linguistic landscapes, and (c) engagement with linguistic content in digital gaming. Design possibilities are discussed, and the limitations of the current research are identified
First-Person Pronoun Use in Sociology and Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) Student Essays : A Corpus-Based Analysis of Disciplinary Differences
This study aims to explore how graduate student writers in Sociology and Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) use first-person pronouns to construct writer identity in academic texts. Drawing on Tang and John’s (1999) six-role typology, the analysis focuses on sixteen A-graded essays from the Michigan Corpus of Upper-Level Student Papers (MICUSP). The findings demonstrate that pronoun use varies across disciplines, reflecting differing rhetorical norms and expectations. There also appear to be differences based on the two genres included in the analysis, which are argumentative essays and research papers. Compared to earlier studies on undergraduate writing, this research reveals a broader and more confident deployment of authorial roles, highlighting the influence of academic level, genre, and disciplinary context. The study offers insights for writing pedagogy and contributes to a deeper understanding of identity construction in student academic writing
Interlocutors’ Use of the Discourse Marker You Know : A Comparative Analysis Across Academic Registers
Spoken discourse requires constant interpretation of messages based on text and interactional strategies. Discourse markers, such as you know, work on several planes to signal intentions, guide information flow and manage social interactions. While empirical research has examined its role in casual and instructional settings, this study investigated its use in the context of power dynamics within academic discourse. Eleven student-advisor interactions and eight student peer conversations from the Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE) were analysed for the marker’s frequency and functions to determine the influence of hierarchical and formal differences on its use. Students used the marker more often in peer conversations than in office hours, suggesting its association with informality and potential deference in hierarchical settings. Conversely, the advisors’ more frequent marker employment suggested dominance and possible attempts to project conversational equality. Functionally, peer interactions balanced information transmission and social engagement, whereas in advisor presence, students prioritised textual and metalinguistic precision, possibly to forestall face loss. Advisors, possessing greater social power, employed the marker primarily to guide interpretation and mitigate authority. Disciplinary differences also emerged. While the Humanities and Arts, as well as the Social Sciences and Education, exhibited a higher overall frequency of you know and prioritised social engagement and metalinguistic precision, the Biological- and Health Sciences, as well as the Physical Sciences and Engineering, favoured its use for textual structuring and repair. These findings suggest that discourse formality, power dynamics, and disciplinary norms influence you know’s distribution and function in academic speech.
Smart Adaptive Ventilation System for Homes and SportsFacilities.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is essential for maintaining occupant health, comfort, and cognitive function, especially in residential and semi-public spaces such as sports facilities. Traditional ventilation systems are often static and rule-based, lacking responsiveness to changing environmental and behavioral conditions. This thesis introduces a Smart Adaptive Ventilation System that combines a Composite Air Quality Index (CAQI) with occupant activity data to provide real-time IAQ predictions using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks. It incorporates Large Language Models (LLMs) to abstract ventilation knowledge. This research has been conducted in Östberg AB. The system's effectiveness was evaluated through two experiments. The first involved training an LSTM model to predict CAQI based on multi-pollutant sensor data and behavioral inputs, using a one-minute time window. The optimal model configuration (2 layers, hidden size of 32, dropout 0.1, learning rate 0.001, sequence length 5) achieved strong performance metrics: low training/validation loss (0.002), RMSE of 0.049, and an R² score of 0.907. It showed good generalization and maintained prediction accuracy within ±10 CAQI. The second experiment developed a Natural Language Interface (NLI) that transforms timestamped Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sensor data into contextualized, knowledge-rich narratives. This approach generates detailed, human-readable explanations grounded in the raw sensor data for each time window. These narratives reflect how domain experts would interpret that moment in terms of identified key knowledge areas. Knowledge extraction from raw ventilation data is achieved using techniques such as knowledge graph construction, triple extraction, and a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) agent. The RAG agent's responses were evaluated against a ground truth dataset using six natural language processing (NLP) metrics to assess its performance. While surface-level accuracy metrics like Exact Match and BLEU were low, semantic similarity scores (Cosine Similarity: 0.76, BERTScore F1: 0.72) suggest the AI reasonably understands ventilation domain knowledge. These results highlight strengths in contextual interpretation but also indicate the need for improved factual precision
Modeling Low-Temperature Radiant Floor Heating for Energy Efficiency in Greenhouses : Parametric study of a Floor Heating System using TRNSYS
This study investigates how a low-temperature radiant floor heating (RFH) system can reduce the energy demand from convection-based auxiliary heating in a 10 000 m2 greenhouse model under Swedish climate conditions. A detailed greenhouse model was simulated in the “Transient System Simulation Software” (TRNSYS) and incorporated an integrated floor heating system to examine its impact on overall energy demand and to identify optimal design parameters. The aim was to evaluate how insulation thickness, pipe spacing, pipe dimensions, and varying supply water temperatures influence system performance, useful heat transfer to the interior, and heat losses to the ground. Including a brief comparison between low-temperature heating methods. Furthermore, the study also aimed to compare heating methods such as water-curtain and liquid foam in combination with underfloor heating to assess further reductions in the need for electricity-based auxiliary heating. Before this study a greenhouse model was developed using Type 56 in TRNSYS, where this thesis implemented a radiant floor heating embedded as the active layer in the center position of 18 cm concrete slab. The parametric study simulations consisted of 12 cases varying (20x2 mm and 25x2.3 mm), pipe spacing (0.2 m and 0.3 m), insulation levels (100 mm and 300 mm), and supply temperatures (30°C, 35°C and 40°C). Each case was evaluated analyzing key performance indicators based on yearly thermal outputs including heating season surface heat flux upwards as useful and downwards as soil loss, energy delivered to the fluid and auxiliary heating demand reduction. The results show that the most successful system design can reduce the auxiliary heating demand from no-floor heating 572 kWh/m2 to 289 kWh/m2 by providing 401 kWh/m2 low gradeheat (40 °C supply temperature) to the floor heating system. Parametric analysis concludes that narrow pipe spacing of 0.2 m leads to slightly higher heat transfer compared to 0.3 and larger pipe sizing of 25x2.3 mm at spacings of 0.2 m is the optimal performing combination in all cases. Using heat recovery ventilation model further reduces auxiliary heating down to 132kWh/m2 with 25x2.3 mm pipes at 0.2 m spacing, 100 mm insulation at 40 °C. A final performance evaluation of 300 mm insulation brought auxiliary heating to 129 kWh/m2. Secondary results found that RFH in combination with other systems such as water-curtain, liquid foam and heat recovery through ventilation proves to further reduction of the auxiliary heating demand. Floor heating alone cannot cover the full heating demand but proves effective as a supplementary low-temperature system, as it is able to replace high-temperature energy heating with low-temperature heat and supports integration with low-cost waste heat sources to achieve a more sustainable greenhouse operation
