    No full text
Svenska</p

Justice in Practice? : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Vegan Travel Blogs on Animal Sanctuaries

    No full text
While the ethics of using animals in tourism are receiving more attention, “animal justice” is still a new concept in tourism studies. This thesis offers a critical perspective on how vegan tourists, as ethically motivated consumers, use their discourse in blogs to reflect (in)justice for animals when they discuss their visits to animal sanctuaries. Using Bacchi´s “What´s the Problem Represented to Be?” approach to Critical Discourse Analysis, thirty-four vegan travel blogs from eighteen different bloggers were analysed, identifying the dominant discourse “Animal Justice as a Practical and Anthropocentric Idea”. This means that even if vegan bloggers strongly advocate against animals` exploitation, their ideas are practical solutions, focused on animal welfare rather than freedom, and with anthropocentric limitations. The findings suggest that while the discourse in these blogs strongly promotes ethical consideration for animals, it also serves as a reflection of broader societal difficulties in moving beyond an anthropocentric perspective when trying to create and apply justice for animals

Usability Testing on Brochures Within the Forest Industry – a Qualitative Case Study

    No full text
There is a clear knowledge gap regarding usability testing on brochures in the forestry industry. By testing how users perceive information in brochures, it is possible to identify potential obstacles towards understanding and thus create better communication tools. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether usability testing can be applied to physical brochures in the forestry industry by analyzing how visual elements affect communication and the recipient's understanding. A qualitative case study has been conducted with usability testing and semi-structured interviews. The study has also conducted the Design and Creation research strategy, as two brochure versions have been created to compare its usability and communication. The study showed that the “think aloud”- method has an essential part when testing the usability of a brochure using usability testing. The results from the scenarios alone did not provide sufficient data compared to the “think aloud”- method which gave more in-depth answers. A combination of usability testing and complementary semi-structured interviews turned out to provide more detailed and in-depth answers about the communication and usability of the brochures. The study also indicates that the use of visual elements such as images, pictograms and color indicators is beneficial in reinforcing the communication in a brochure. It was also found that a clear structure in the form of headings and layout is beneficial in helping the user navigate. Reworded and simplified texts also helped the user absorb information. Using these elements together was shown to significantly increase the recipient's understanding. Several hypotheses about the results for the first question have been discussed. One of them is that brochures can be difficult to test if they consist of few pages. Another is that the respondents' attitude towards what the brochure is about plays a role in how well they perform the scenarios.

    No full text
This thesis examines the transformation of religious education in Swedish upper secondary school by comparing the subject plans of Gy11 and the forthcoming Gy25. It analyzes changes in objectives, core content, and knowledge requirements, and how these reflect shifting conceptions of knowledge, educational aims, and societal expectations. Gert Biesta’s theory of educational functions and Basil Bernstein’s concepts of vertical and horizontal discourse serve as the theoretical framework. Through qualitative document analysis, key continuities and discontinuities between the curricula are identified. The results indicate that Gy25 introduces a more long-term and coherent knowledge structure, with an increased emphasis on democratic values and critical engagement with religious and existential issues. Biesta’s educational functions: qualification, socialization, and subjectification are more explicitly embedded in Gy25, highlighting the subject’s role in fostering reflective and active citizenship. Bernstein’s framework reveals a movement toward a stronger vertical discourse, suggesting cleare r subject progression. The study concludes that these curricular shifts represent an ideological reorientation: from a Christian-normative foundation toward a more secular and liberal educational approach. Religious education thus emerges not as confessional or neutral, but as normatively grounded in democratic and pluralistic values.

Feature Films, Religious and Special Education : An Interview Study on How Eight Swedish Special Educators Perceive and Evaluate Feature Films as A Didactic Tool in Religions Education

    No full text
This thesis investigates how eight Swedish special educators view film as a didactic tool in religious education, focusing on challenges, benefits, and potential issues in compulsory school level. The study is grounded in a qualitative method, including semi-structured interviews anda phenomenographic analysis approach to identify variations in perception. The study was grounded in theories of categorical and relational perspectives, narrative identity theory and universal design for learning. The findings indicate that religious education has become more complex, posing difficulties for students with special needs. Films were seen as helpful, particularly for students with autism, ADHD, and speech impairments, but they require careful planning and follow-up to be effective. The study emphasizes the importance of special educators´ experience in making teaching more inclusive and meaningful. The study highlights the unique role of special educators in promoting inclusive education, not only through individual adaptations but also by contributing to strategic planning and didactic development. It also points to the need for more research on film as a pedagogical medium in special needs context, particularly within the field of religious education. By illuminating the perspective of special educators, this thesis adds to the growing discourse on multimodal and inclusive teaching strategies in contemporary schools

The life issues of religious education linked to perceived mental health in young people

    No full text
This degree project aims to explore how young people reason about the subject of life issues, how they experience their well-being is affected when discussing such topics, and which attitude they express regarding the time that has been devoted to life issue discussions during religious education in lower secondary school. The method used is a questionnaire, and the sample consists of selected ninth-grade students. The background highlights mental health issues in Swedish society and the increasing problem of school absenteeism during secondary school, often rooted in mental illness. Previous research includes scientific publications related to life issues in education and youth mental health. The results show that the surveyed students are generally positive towards discussing life issues. However, many also associate existential questions primarily with religious groups. The analysis indicates that students feel positively affected by these discussions, regardless of religious or secular affiliation, and that they feel enriched by hearing others´ thoughts and perspectives. In the discussion, the authors argue that their result, when considered alongside previous research, suggest that existential well-being among adolescents, and eventually adults, in Sweden could improve if teachers build trusting relationships with student and integrate life issue discussions into religious education. Ideally, this would help shift the perception of such topic from being solely tied to religiosity toward being more connected with individual development and personal acceptance

Assessment Methods and Adapted Teaching : History Teachers' Strategies, Challenges and Opportunities in multilingual classrooms with newly arrived Students

    No full text
This study investigates the challenges, opportunities and teaching strategies encountered by history teachers in multilingual classrooms with newly arrived students. It also examines how knowledge assessment is adapted in such settings. The study is based on qualitative, semistructured, interviews with six lower secondary school teachers experienced in working with multilingual learners. The findings reveal that language barriers often make it difficult for students to grasp expectations, particularly in the analytical components of history education. A lack of subject-focused collaboration with study guidance tutors further limits the support available. To address these challenges, teachers apply flexible strategies such as structured lessons, visual aids and language-oriented methods. The diversity in multilingual classrooms is seen as enriching both teaching and historical understanding. Inclusive practices also benefit other students in need of support, indicating broader pedagogical value. The study concludes that inclusive history teaching requires linguistic awareness, flexibility and collaboration across professional roles to meet the needs of newly arrived students.
