    No full text

Key Elements of Online Teaching: The first step in learning to use the online teaching approach

    Get PDF
This article reports an online classroom research carried out during the influence of a highly transmissible infectious epidemic. Google Classroom (hereafter GC) was adopted for the entire 2020 academic year and instructors were informed of this new approach to teaching two weeks prior to the beginning of the first semester in April. Teachers had to conduct their GC while facing and experiencing the constraints and limitations brought by COVID-19. To understand the studentsʼ experience and thoughts towards online classroom, this article analyzes the questionnaire students did at the end of the term. The analysis will touch upon such issues as the effectiveness of teaching, the nature of online teaching, and the problem of motivating both students and teachers. As will be shown, the ʻ5 minutes Quick Taskʼ worked well with online classroom and it was found that the teacherʼs positive attitude and stance was an effective means for encouraging students to work in the classroom

Narrative Frames as a Curriculum Assessment Tool: The Storytelling Test

Getting first year students to enjoy speaking in English in class is often challenging. There are several reasons for this. In the Junior College English department, classes are reshuffl ed in the second semester according to studentsʼ achievement test scores. Some students may be placed in the same class along with the friends they made in the first semester. Naturally, if they are not, they may feel shy to speak to an unknown person. In addition, students may not feel confident enough in their English ability to speak freely at any length on a topic. One solution to this problem is what I coined the storytelling test (ST). This paper introduces the ST as a classroom activity used to develop confidence in English speaking ability by giving students the opportunity to learn an English childrenʼs story and to retell that story at a later time. In addition, the paper addresses the studentsʼ perceptions of the activity and their storytelling ability̶data gathered through narrative frames
