Teacher and Student Roles in Freire’s Critical Pedagogy: A Qualitative Case Study

    Get PDF
Research has indicated that many teachers and students lack the critical classroom experience where they play the roles of subjects controlling the educational process and developing knowledge together. With an emphasis on teaching instead of learning, classroom interactions are limited, and creativity and the cultivation of critical thinking skills and critical consciousness are restricted. This qualitative case study explored the instructional delivery methods in a Ghanaian university through the lens of teacher and student roles, a concept of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy. The study purposefully selected 11 participants (eight students, two teachers, and one administrative staff) who provided substantial data and profound meaning and understanding of the phenomenon. The data analysis revealed that the concept of teacher and student roles informs the institution’s instructional delivery methods through collaborative education (through student-centered learning and group work) and adaptive teaching strategies. The findings of this study indicate that the concept of teacher and student roles develops students’ critical consciousness and ownership of knowledge

The Perceived Benefits of and Barriers to Open-Water Swimming: A Mixed-Methods Examination

    Get PDF
This study set out to determine the perceived benefits of, and barriers to, open-water swimming (OWS). Adopting a mixed-methods approach, six hundred and sixty-five open-water swimmers responded to an online survey consisting of the Exercise Benefits and Barriers Scale (EBBS) and a series of open-ended questions. Data from the EBBS revealed the strongest perceived benefits to be ‘Psychological Outlook’ and ‘Life Enhancement.’ In terms of barriers, those presented in the EBBS received low ratings with only ‘Physical Exertion’ considered as being somewhat problematic. Content analysis performed on the open-ended responses showed social aspects, mental well-being, and connection to nature as being particularly beneficial. Barriers to full participation included water pollution, accessibility, and poor weather conditions. These outcomes are discussed in relation to the uniqueness of the open-water swimming experience. Comparisons to other exercise modes also are presented

Fighting instinct: The Brain, Emotions and Decision-making in the Water

    Get PDF
This conceptual paper explores the complex interplay among the human brain, emotions, and decision-making processes, particularly in aquatic environments. Integrating insights from neuroscience, psychology, and behavioural economics, we investigate how instinctual responses and emotional states influence our decisions during water-related activities. By analysing both biological and psychological factors, the paper aims to illuminate the intricacies of human behaviour in various aquatic settings and highlights significant gaps in the research on emotional decision-making that warrant further investigation. Additionally, the paper suggests interventions, including plausible communication strategies, to mitigate the impact of instinctual responses and improve safety and decision-making efficiency

Challenges and Opportunities in Medical Tourism

    Get PDF
Medical tourism is a rapidly expanding industry, with an increasing number of patients traveling abroad for medical treatments and procedures. This trend is expected to continue as the industry evolves to meet shifting patient demands and preferences. People are motivated to seek healthcare outside their home countries for various reasons, such as access to advanced technology, faster treatment, higher quality care, or more affordable options available in the destination country. Patients today are more informed and selective about their healthcare choices. They seek not only cost-effective treatments but also high-quality care and an exceptional patient experience. The future of medical tourism looks promising, with ongoing growth and emerging opportunities. Factors contributing to this expansion include technological advancements and growing trust in medical tourism, fueled by the establishment of international quality standards and global accreditation. Despite its appeal, medical tourism faces several challenges, the most notable being its sensitivity to geopolitical events. Other obstacles include visa and immigration regulations, currency fluctuations, and rising competition due to reduced healthcare reimbursement for local patients. Success in the medical tourism industry requires clear and effective short- and long-term strategies. In this article, we will explore the latest trends in medical tourism and examine the potential for future growth

    Narrative Inquiry as Contemplative Methodology

    Get PDF
This reflective essay describes how contemplative practices, including mindfulness, presence, deep listening, contemplative reading, free writing, visualization, bearing witness, and loving kindness, were engaged during my doctoral research study. As a novice researcher but experienced practitioner, contemplative practice guided my research and creative processes, allowing me to present a deeper understanding of the participants in my study while simultaneously bringing a heartfulness to my ethical decisions. While it is not uncommon for researchers to draw on their existing skills in mindfulness and other contemplative practices, I propose that contemplative practice is central to narrative inquiry research, making it both a qualitative methodology that can be enriched by contemplative practice but also a research methodology that is contemplative at its core
