The “Geography of Opportunity” in Flyover Country: A College Match Case Study

    Get PDF
In previous studies of college match, specifically undermatching and its far-reaching consequences among traditionally underserved students, students’ geographic proximity to postsecondary institutions (particularly those with which they match) has not always received much consideration. As it stands, the scholarly consensus on college match is not representative of students who live far from regions that are rich with college options of all levels. We evaluated the college match outcomes of 334 high school graduates from a public school district in the Midwest that has a relatively low concentration of colleges nearby. We categorized college match using student competitiveness based on GPA and ACT scores and college selectivity based on Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges (2017). We found widespread undermatching. Further, results suggested that the geographic proximity of students’ college options is associated with their likelihood of undermatching

Navigating Leadership: A Qualitative Exploration of Challenges and Coping Strategies for Women in Sport Management Education

    Get PDF
Abstract Women remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles in higher education, a disparity that is particularly pronounced in male-dominated disciplines, such as sport management (Chance, 2023; Lozano et al., 2023). This qualitative study examines the challenges faced by women in leadership positions within sport management education and the strategies they employ to overcome these barriers. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with biological females holding leadership roles at both teaching- and research-focused institutions. Participants ranged in age from 32 to 74 and had between one and twenty-four years of leadership experience. Using thematic analysis, key challenges identified included male-dominated work environments, double standards, incivility, and disrespect from both colleagues and students. These factors contributed to diminished authority, professional isolation, and hindered career advancement. Participants emphasized the importance of mentorship, professional networks, and peer support in coping with these challenges. The findings highlight a critical need for systemic change in sport management education through more inclusive leadership development, stronger mentorship structures, and a shift in organizational culture to support and retain women leaders. Keywords: Male-Dominated Environments, Women in Leadership, Sport Management Education, Double Standard

Overcoming the Obstacles Prohibiting Honors Students from Studying Abroad

    Get PDF
The goal of my study was to understand the constraints to studying abroad at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural levels and propose strategies for honors students to negotiate those. From using the hierarchical leisure constraint model as a foundation for bringing to light the limits hindering study abroad opportunities, I sought to inform honors students on how to acknowledge and handle these constraints in tandem with recognizing ways to overcome them. By administering a questionnaire to the Honors College student body in the fall inquiring about student interest in studying abroad and why a large percentage of the honors student population declines this global opportunity, my goal was to gauge honors students’ perspectives on international study as a milestone of their college experience and how studying abroad can positively impact their personal development/professional aspirations. Once I collected sufficient data, I analyzed the results of my study in accordance with my initial research so that I could draw a more solidified conclusion regarding my research question along with a representative sample of responses from the honors student body at BGSU. Additionally, I sought to uncover students’ outlooks on how studying abroad is connected to navigating culture shock and expanding global perspectives through my original research. Also, I intentionally took advantage of the diverse mix of majors within the Honors College, which aided in a more indicative study of honors students’ academic pursuits

Analysis of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives in Environmental Education in Wisconsin

    Get PDF
This research aims to identify the quantity, quality, and condition of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in environmental education in Wisconsin. Researchers surveyed environmental education organizations across the state to collect and disseminate data related to the status and needs of these initiatives, and to identify areas of strength, improvement, or future staff learning opportunities. Some of the current DEI concerns in environmental education focus on the lack of diversity represented by staffing, achievement gaps represented by marginalized students, and a lack of overall accessibility to the outdoors or outdoor education for diverse communities. Findings from this study reinforce existing DEI deficits in the field, and support a need for reexamination of practices and continued development for DEI initiatives in environmental education

    Measuring Exposure Through Targeted Ads

    Get PDF
This study investigates the effectiveness of targeted digital advertising strategies for Company X, a performance motorsports fuel brand. With the goal of optimizing engagement and improving budget allocation, four distinct ad campaigns were developed and tested on Facebook and Instagram: brand awareness, product education, dealer locator promotion, and lifestyle merchandise promotion. Each campaign was evaluated based on reach, impressions, cost per result, and conversion rates. Descriptive statistics revealed significant differences in engagement rates across campaigns, with video-based, emotionally driven ads outperforming static formats. A one-way ANOVA indicated no significant difference in reach across campaigns but confirmed significant differences in spending patterns. Multiple regression analysis found that campaign type was a major predictor of cost efficiency, with emotional and utility-driven ads resulting in lower costs per result. A positive relationship between amount spent and cost per result was also identified, suggesting diminishing marginal returns at higher spending levels. Key takeaways include the importance of aligning campaign objectives with creative strategies, prioritizing emotional branding, and targeting male audiences who demonstrated higher conversion rates. Future research should explore cross-platform performance, scalability of predictive optimization models for different motorsports businesses, and the deeper psychological impacts of community-focused storytelling. These findings provide actionable insights for motorsports marketers seeking to maximize ROI and strengthen brand loyalty in a highly competitive digital environment

The Diegetic Purpose of Humor in Superhero Media

    Get PDF
Superheroes draw fans in with their fantastic powers, but also their humanizing personalities. Humor is one such trait often used to endear viewers of superhero media to the title characters. However, why do these characters maintain their witty personas and cheerful nature as they fight against evil? This question may seem to have a few simple answers, but there is a lack of research explaining the in-depth psychological reasoning for humor in the context of a superhero’s reality. This study investigates the multiple roles humor can play in a hero’s development as a human being. By studying the psychology of humor and then connecting it to dozens of examples of wit from superhero media, the intricacy of humor becomes clear. A wise-cracking hero is not just a way to make a fan chuckle. Their different forms of wit shape their growth, relationships, resilience, performance in adversity, and much more. These revelations in the diegetic context of superhero media are then applied to an original animation that is created to highlight the power of humor. Together, the research and applicative examples can serve as a guide on how to perceive funny fictional characters more thoroughly and apply the rationale from the study to improve the writing of humorous characters during the creation of new stories
