MORUS NIGRA L. LEAVES – THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES IN LIVER DISEASES AND RELATED DISORDERS
Over the last years Morus nigra L. raised an interest in various research fields. Several studies assessed their polyphenolic profile and mulberry leaves and fruits are currently used as ingredients in teas, beverages and functional products highlighting their antioxidant properties. This study focused on finding out how mulberry leaf extracts could impact liver diseases. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the leading cause of chronic liver disorders. The currently proposed pharmaco-therapies are studied for safety and efficacy therefore, alternative aids are needed. This work attempts to highlight the therapeutic properties of mulberry leaf extracts through a review of in vitro and in vivo studies. Current research on mulberry leaves extracts shows that their content of bioactive compounds can reduce palmitic acid-induced lipotoxicity, promote total cholesterol and bile acid excretion, enhance SOD expression, and improve insulin resistance. Morus nigra L. leaves present hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic activities. They are also shown as beneficial in the management of obesity, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, NAFLD and NASH. Given the reported therapeutic benefits of mulberry leaf extracts in the management of liver diseases and related disorders and considering the urgency of providing alternative solutions to managing such diseases, mulberry leaves might be valuable ingredients in developing functional products in the management of liver disorders
VOLATILE OILS FROM PEPPERMINT, BASIL, ROSEMARY AND GINGER – EXTRACTION AND APPLICABILITY IN A NEW DRESSING COMPOSITION
Four varieties of a salad dressing containing lemon and parsley as main ingredients were formulated with the aim of developing functional food products, with good sensorial acceptability, ready for consumers use. The dressing consumption may bring benefits on the overall health of the consumers, due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive and anti-carcinogenic capacity, derived from the product enrichment with one of the essential oils of peppermint, basil, rosemary and ginger. The dressings were analysed in terms of pH, acidity, vitamin C content, mineral composition, antioxidant capacity and total polyphenolic content. The sensorial analysis of the dressing products revealed overall acceptability of the products
THE INFLUENCE OF SOME PRODUCTS ON THE ROOTING OF ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS L. CUTTINGS
In Ancient Greece, before the exams, students wore rosemary leaves. They thought it would improve their memory. It is also one of the symbols of love, loyalty, friendship. Rosemary is grown for the aerial part (Rosmarinus herba) or leaves (Rosmarinus folium). Rosemary has cleansing, antiseptic, anti-anemic, antifungal, diuretic action. Rosemary oil intensifies blood circulation in the brain, helping to increase the ability to concentrate and improve memory. The percentage of rosmarin rooted cuttings is higher when using the mixed substrate (peat + perlite), both in the untreated variant and in the variant treated with Chryzotop Vert
Monitoring Food Additives and Nutritional Composition of Labels of Food Bases
During June, 2017, ten products from the food bases category have been studied. The companies and the products types were noted and the manufacturer’s labels were studied. It has been found that the rules on the labeling of food bases are respected. The study had the following objectives: studying the ingredients and the nutritional composition and identifying the additives used in the manufacture of the product. Studying product labels also highlighted an increased salt and sugar content. The percentage of dehydrated vegetables was between 4.49% and 38%. The vegetables content was different for the food bases investigated. The 40% of food bases had between nine and ten dehydrated vegetables, the 60% had between four and six dehydrated vegetables. Additives added to foods during processing are important to improve their appearance and to extend their shelf life
CONVERSION OF ROSEHIP, CRANBERRY, GOJI AND COCONUT FRUITS INTO A FUNCTIONAL TEA RICH IN BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE PRINCIPLES
Nowadays, the development of the food industry relies heavily on the valorisation of some products with a high content of beneficial compounds for the human body. Through the studies and research, but following the results, it was intended to obtain tea enriched with various natural compounds (antioxidants, vitamins, minerals) by harvesting the fruits of rose, cranberry, goji and coconut, naturally sweetened with steviol. Subsequent to obtaining, we performed physicochemical laboratory tests, in which we tracked the antioxidant capacity, total polyphenol content, vitamin C content, and acidity. As a result, we have traced the qualities of each fruit in order to achieve a better combination of taste, colour and nutritional properties
COMPARING THE PLANT BIOMASS AND THE VOLATILE OIL CONTENT OF SWEET BASIL (OCIMUM BASILICUM L.) CULTIVARS GROWN IN TÂRGU MUREȘ
Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is an annual aromatic herb of great economic importance. Seven cultivars were cultivated in the area of Târgu Mureș in 2017. The biomass fractions, drying ratio and drug percent were compared, respectively the volatile oil content of the cultivars was determined and the major compounds of the VO identified using GC-MS method
THE STATUS OF MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANT CULTURE AND EXPLOITATION IN ROMANIA
Romania, having various climatic and soil conditions, has a rich and diverse flora, of which some are plants used for medicinal and aromatic purposes. The species of higher importance for the chemical-pharmaceutical industry were gradually introduced into the crop to provide the need for its vegetable raw material. By cultivating the medicinal and aromatic plants on a scientific basis, the need for vegetal raw material for the production of medicines of plant origin in our country is covered, a product rich in active principles and more homogeneous is obtained, substitutions and falsifications in the raw material can be avoided and plants considered monuments of nature can be protected, etc. Large raw material output rich in active principles can only be obtained by applying differentiated culture technologies, based on sound knowledge of biology and plant requirements towards vegetation factors.The Plafar Company, created to monitor the cultivation of medicinal species and rationally organize the exploitation of spontaneous flora, has undergone a series of restructurings that are presented in the paper
Influence of Long Term Fertilization With NPK on Wheat Production and Chemical Characteristics of Typical Chernozem From Valu Lui Traian
To determine the evolution soil fertility as a result of NPK fertilization, are presented experimental results from a long-term experience after 44 years of fertilization. The experimental field is located on the chernozem - soil type, the plant of culture was wheat. Nitrogen and phosphorus doses that were applied had 2 graduations. We tracked the influence of fertilizers on the production and content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, humus, pH and heavy metals: Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn from the soil after harvesting. The highest yield (4288 kg / ha) was obtained in fertilized variants with N100K150, variants where the production level increased by 216% compared to the unfertilized soil (1987 kg / ha); Fertilization with 100 kg / ha of phosphorus alone or with 50-150 kg / ha of potassium and fertilization with N100P100 along with doses of 50-150 kg / ha of potassium have led to very significant increases in the level of the mobile phosphorus in soil (from 34 mg / kg in unfertilized soil to 178 mg / kg in variant fertilized with N100P100 kg / ha), the potassium content of the soil increased very significantly with the increase of the applied potassium dose
Endophytic Root Colonization Patterns in Early and Mid-Spring Geophytes from Cluj County
Analysis of ten vernal ephemerals from Agro-Botanical Garden UASVM Cluj-Napoca revealed that all were naturally colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizae and fine root endophytes. Dark septate endophytes were observed in seven species. Highest frequency of arbuscular mycorrhizae colonization was found in Muscari armeniacum while second highest in Crocus vernus and Galanthus nivalis. High arbuscular mycorrhizae colonization frequency appears simultaneous with high fine root endophyte colonization in some species, but high arbuscular mycorrhizae frequency is not associated with highest dark septate endophyte presence. Lax arbuscular mycorrhizae symbiosis was identified in Iris reticulata and Hyacinthus orientalis. EFFECT OF NETTLE LEAVES POWDER (URTICA DIOICA L.) ADDITION ON THE QUALITY OF BREAD
Nettle leaves is a good source of proteins, fibers, minerals and other bioactive compounds and it could be an ideal ingredient for improving the nutritional value of bread and bakery products. The quality evaluation of nettle leaves powder (Urtica dioica L.) and wheat flour (type 550) was performed and the effect of nettle leaves powder on the physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of wheat bread were studied. The nettle leaves powder was blended with wheat flour at different levels: 2%, 4% and 6% for preparing bread samples. The results showed a valuable increment in bread protein, ash and fiber content. The specific volume of the breads decreased as the level of nettle leaves powder increased due the dilution of gluten content in the blend and due to the interactions among fiber components, water and gluten. Nevertheless, substitution at 2%, 4% and 6%, gives parameter values at least as good as the control sample and produces acceptable bread, in terms specific volume and sensorial properties
