    On the Use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing in Vs30 Seismic Hazard Microzontation: A Case Study in Port Angeles, Washington

    The city of Port Angeles, Washington, is situated above the Cascadia Subduction Zone in Northern Washington state. Some studies estimate that the probability of a Mw 8.8-9.2 earthquake occurring in the next 50 years is 10-14% (Frankel &amp; Petersen, 2008). This risk presents the growing need to study seismic hazard in Washington, at both regional and local scales. In order to address this, we examine the efficacy of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for determining shallow shear wave velocities for site-specific seismic hazard evaluation. In this study, we compare shear wave depth models and calculated Vs30 (average shear wave velocity from the surface to a depth of 30 m) between geophones and a DAS array in Port Angeles, WA. We performed active multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) surveys for three sites across a 1 km section of a dark-fiber DAS array to invert for shear wave structure below the surface. Our results show that while the DAS results have higher uncertainty in our models, the results are comparable to geophone results for Vs30 purposes and agree with previous shear wave studies of the geologic unit through which our array runs. DAS also improves upon the time it takes to get shear wave profiles at multiple locations using MSAW, and we present DAS results that expand our 1-D Vs (shear wave velocity) profile results to include additional locations. If DAS can be widely implemented into the existing urban infrastructure, it could significantly expand our ability for seismic microzonation, or seismic zonation at a small, local, site-specific scale.</p

    Suppressing Information in Working Memory Reduces Item-Specific Information but Retains Category-General Information: Evidence From Behavioral and FMRI Experiments

    There are distinct strategies for intentionally removing information from working memory: an item can be replaced with thoughts of another item, specific thoughts of an item can be suppressed, or all thoughts can be cleared from mind. Analyzing fMRI data using multivariate analysis techniques, past studies examining these removal strategies have found that suppressing specific information facilitates better subsequent encoding of related information. In addition, when suppressed items are forgotten (as assessed by long-term recognition tests), item-specific aspects of the representation are reduced but category-level aspects of the representation remain intact. These past findings suggest that suppression may specifically reduce the activation of item-specific features in WM, resulting in a category-general representation. The aim of the five experiments in this dissertation were to test this hypothesis using a number of complimentary approaches. Of particular note, behavioral findings indicate that suppression eliminates semantic priming of item-specific features compared to maintaining information in working memory but does not affect priming of category-general features. Neuroimaging results also demonstrate that the consequences of suppression differ between items that are category typical and atypical, with more effective removal of atypical items. Altogether, the findings in this dissertation provide converging support for the hypothesis that suppression weakens the representation of item-specific information in working memory, leading to a general category representation that can affect subsequent behavior in different ways depending on the context.</p

    When Life Gives You Data: Leveraging Existing Data Sources to Inform Future Management of Pinyon–Juniper Woodlands

    Pinyon&ndash;juniper ecosystems in the Western United States exist on vast areas of public lands and are ecologically, economically, and culturally significant. Shifts in climate and land use have driven tree expansion and densification in these systems, creating degraded landscapes and prompting the implementation of tree reduction treatments. In my dissertation, I utilized existing data sources to assess the effects of these treatments and investigate the influence of treatment factors and environmental conditions on treatment outcomes. I first used observational monitoring data and causal inference techniques to assess pinyon&ndash;juniper treatment effectiveness in Northwest Colorado. After developing a thorough methodology to account for challenges in data quality, I found that treatments had varied effects on understory vegetation cover&mdash;both native and nonnative&mdash;and that those effects changed with the method of tree removal and the vegetation cover at a site prior to treatment. I then investigated treatment effectiveness at sites on the Colorado Plateau using meta-analytical methods and existing data from the literature. Findings from my meta-analysis also showed that the effect of treatment on understory vegetation varied by treatment type, although was mostly positive, and included variation in treatment effects by environmental conditions like aridity and elevation. The Northwest Colorado study and the Colorado Plateau study both revealed potential treatment benefits of increased native understory vegetation cover and potential risks of invasive species introduction and proliferation, highlighting tradeoffs of treatment implementation. Together, my dissertation chapters convey the power of utilizing existing data, particularly to assess landscape-scale restoration treatments carried out on U.S. public lands. My work emphasizes the knowledge that can be gleaned from treatment evaluation and provides data and information to support land managers in promoting more resilient ecosystems in the face of environmental change.</p

    Nicotine and cannabis vaping among early high school adolescents: Disparities of use across sociodemographic characteristics and associations with psychosocial factors

    Objective. This study examines whether adolescent nicotine and cannabis vaping types (i.e., nicotine-only, cannabis-only, and dual use) differ across sociodemographic and school characteristics (e.g., age, gender, sexual identity, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status [SES], school setting/type), and associations of vaping types with psychosocial factors. Methods. From 2021 to 2022, 9th and 10th grade adolescents (N = 2,476) in Colorado and Ohio participated in a survey measuring vaping behaviors and psychosocial factors including substance use attitudes, alcohol use, mental health, aggression, and family and school risk and protective factors. Results. Past month vaping prevalence was 89.7 % for non-use, 5.9 % for nicotine-only, 1.0 % for cannabis-only, and 3.4 % for dual use. Chi-square tests of independence showed several significant sociodemographic differences for past month vaping: higher nicotine-only vaping prevalence for females (vs. males) (p &lt; 0.001), higher nicotine-only and dual vaping prevalence for LGB+ (vs. heterosexual) youth (ps &lt; 0.01), higher dual vaping prevalence for Hispanic and multiethnic (vs. White) adolescents (p &lt; 0.001), and higher nicotine-only, cannabis-only, and dual vaping prevalence for lower (vs. higher) mother education (ps &lt; 0.001). Regression models examining associations between vaping types (vs. non-use) and psychosocial factors indicated a robust pattern of worse levels of substance use attitudes, alcohol use, mental health, aggression, and family and school factors for nicotine-only and dual users. Results followed a similar pattern but to a lesser degree for cannabis-only users. Conclusions. Findings identify characteristics of adolescents who may be particularly vulnerable to higher vaping risk (females, LGB+, Hispanic, multiethnic, low SES) and suggest needs for preventive interventions aimed to reduce all types of vaping for better adolescent behavioral health. </div
