Breaking the Mask Ceiling: The Association between Governor Gender, Policy Responses and Mortality Outcomes During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Get PDF
This study explores the association between the gender of governors, policy response, and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The foundation of this research is based on existing literature on the response to the pandemic on state and federal levels and the role of political party affiliation. Additionally, the foundation consists of explored differences in leadership styles between men and women and any potential implications these had on the pandemic. This research study utilizes mortality data from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with data collected on policy implementations in 2020 and 2021. The demographic data (gender and political party affiliation) for governors was retrieved from the National Governors Association. Statistical analyses were used to determine correlations between these three variables. No statistically significant findings were observed except for the impact of mask mandates on mortality rates in 2021. However, the lack of significant relationships may be attributed to the small sample size of female governors. The findings from this research transcend the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and call for diversity in gender (and beyond) within the American government. </p

Making “Colorful Colorado” Colorful: How BIPOC Community Building & Advocacy Overcomes Exclusionary Narratives to Redefine the Great Outdoors

Colorado is known for its outdoor culture and prominent outdoor recreational environments that offer nearly endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. However, Colorado’s expansive outdoor culture is also steeped in socio-economic, racial, and cultural inaccessibility developed throughout history as processes of exclusion and violence have made racially marginalized communities highly vulnerable and unwelcome in outdoor spaces. This research analyzes the history of outdoor recreation since the 1800s in order to cultivate an understanding of the inequities and exclusionary narratives that have intentionally separated non-white people from outdoor spaces. More specifically, this thesis asks: how have ongoing processes of settler colonialism and racialization shaped the development of outdoor recreation, how do people of color engage in outdoor recreation and how are they represented, and how do BIPOC communities challenge dominant outdoor recreational narratives that seek to define outdoor recreation as white? Looking specifically at Boulder and Denver, CO, this research engages with interviews conducted with BIPOC-led environmental organizations, outdoor affinity groups, and individual recreationists to center the testimonies, lived experiences, advocacy, and leadership of racially marginalized communities in making outdoor spaces more accessible, inclusive, and equitable despite exclusionary forces and narratives that attempt to maintain the whiteness of outdoor recreation. This research draws on frameworks and literature from scholars addressing race, colonialism, and environmentalism dating back to the 19th century to show that widespread outdoor exclusion is a long-term colonial project maintained by political and socio-economic forces. However, this research does not just attempt to provide an in-depth analysis of this history but also to illuminate a pathway meticulously carved by BIPOC leadership and grassroots community organizing in creating sustainable recreational communities and spaces informed by the intrinsic connection between humans and the natural world. </p

Evolution of Militaristic Nationalism in China under Xi Jinping’s Leadership

Get PDF
In 2022 during the 20th National People’s Congress, Chairman Xi Jinping of the ChineseCommunist Party said, “We will intensify military training under combat conditions, layingemphasis on joint training, force-on-force training, and high-tech training. We will become moreadept at deploying our military forces on a regular basis and in diversified ways, and our militarywill remain both steadfast and flexible as it carries out its operations. This will enable us to shapeour security posture, deter and manage crises and conflicts, and win local wars” (Nikkei). IsChina preparing for war? Why is there a need to develop combat readiness when there is noarmed conflict China is involved in? Although China is not currently involved in any type ofarmed conflict and isn’t “at war” with anyone, the emphasis and prioritization of combat trainingand readiness points to China’s engagement in militaristic nationalism. Nationalism in China has been growing the past decade under the leadership of ChairmanXi Jinping. It is most notably evident through Chinese leadership’s increased use of militaristicrhetoric and open displays of aggression on Taiwan and their territorial disputes withneighboring countries such as Japan and India. China has also grown far more nationalistic athome and are fueling sentiments comparable to that of past fascist states such as Nazi Germany. This recent development from the past decade follows a dangerous trend suggesting that militaryconflict between China and the West may be inevitable. This thesis seeks to trace the rise ofmilitaristic nationalism in political rhetoric and in state practices both internally and externally. The dictionary definition of militaristic nationalism is defined as, “the belief or desire ofa government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and beprepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests” (Oxford Dictionary).Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, militaristic nationalism is seen in the increased prioritizationof the military in society as a whole, China’s more assertive and aggressive territorial disputes, and through the increased nationalistic rhetoric delivered in public speeches. This shift issignificant because China is the second largest economy in the world and is a nation that wieldssignificant political, economic, and military power. A more aggressive and nationalistic Chinaposes a potential threat to world stability and peace. The military is a tool to enforce China’saggressive foreign policy and the major changes in attitudes due to nationalism means that Chinamay resort to armed conflict to accomplish its long-term objectives. Additionally, as theAmerican military shifts its focus to the Indo-Pacific, and with China’s radicalization beingwidely discussed by high-ranking senior officials in Washington, this issue will only increase inimportance for the near future. With an increasingly multipolar world where the United Statesnow has to compete with a near peer competitor, this could mean armed conflict with a moreassertive and confident China is more likely than ever before.</p

Pulse Characterization via Two-photon Autocorrelation Signals for Multi-color Pulse Trains in a Systematic Approach

Get PDF
Understanding ultrafast phenomena in modern science requires a detailed investigation of the interaction between short, intense pulses and matter. However, temporally characterizing such pulses remains a significant challenge in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), deep ultraviolet (DUV), and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral regimes. In this thesis, we revisit the previously established two-photon autocorrelation technique—originally developed to characterize pulses centered on a single frequency (i.e., single-color)—and extend it to enable the reconstruction of complex multi-color pulse trains. Due to the increased complexity of this problem, a systematic approach was employed to gain deeper insight into the reconstruction process. These insights were then applied to revisit the multi-color reconstruction problem with a more informed and effective methodology.</p

Modification and Characterization of a Pulsed Molecular Beam Valve for a C6_6H5+_5^++ NH3_3 Reaction in a Coulomb Crystal

Get PDF
C6_6H5+_5^+ is an important molecule believed to be fundamental to the formation mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the interstellar medium and dark molecular clouds. Recent studies have found that C6_6H5+_5^+ does not tend to react with small organic molecules and diatomics, prompting exploration of the interaction of C6_6H5+_5^+ with another astrochemically relevant molecule-- ammonia. To create conditions similar to those present in the interstellar medium, this reaction takes place in an ultrahigh vacuum using a Coulomb Crystal. Past efforts to properly introduce ammonia to a vacuum chamber have failed, creating a need for a new pulsed molecular beam source. This study follows the development and characterization of a pulsed molecular beam valve, based on the Nijmegen Pulsed valve, to evaluate if such a valve sufficiently introduces ammonia to a vacuum chamber and operates within other behavioral parameters required for a cold-ion molecule reaction.</p
