The Correlation Between Gender Role Perceptions and Religious Shifts in San José, Costa Rica
As religious and gender identities have become more flexible in recent years, the correlation between religion and gender roles in Latin America has become increasingly complex. The religious makeup of Latin America is changing, with a decrease in Catholicism and an increase in irreligious individuals and Evangelical Christians. This thesis investigates the correlation between religion and gender role perceptions in San José, Costa Rica, exploring how these identities shift over time and in relationship with one another. It utilizes qualitative findings from 18 semi-structured interviews completed in December of 2025, with participants who identified as Catholic, Evangelical Christian, and “other.” Interviews explored individuals' relationships with religion and their perceptions on gender roles in Costa Rican society, focusing on how interviewee’s relationships with gender and religion changed over time. The study revealed a shift in the way that individuals relate to both religion and gender roles, suggesting a broad movement away from strict institutional expectations within church and family structures and towards the creation of more flexible belief systems. Interviewees reported preferences for more equal and flexible familial roles alongside a prioritization of more open belief systems outside of institutional religion. These findings provide a deeper understanding of religious shifts in Latin America by exploring the complexities behind demographic changes through personal accounts. The study furthers Latin American scholarship by providing an avenue for understanding recent shifts in religion and gender roles and how they relate to one another. </p
The Function of PARP and DNA Repair Genes on DNA Repair
Over 20,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually(American Cancer Society). Although there are several clinical treatments, over time cancers canbecome resistant to these therapies. With resistance comes the need to study cellular mechanismsin order to implement more effective combination therapies and combat this problem. PARP(Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase) inhibitors, which target DNA repair, are one example of anovarian cancer treatment that inevitably leads to resistance. One combination therapy in clinicaltrials to combat PARPi resistance is to target the DNA repair pathway, microhomology-mediatedend joining (MMEJ). Thus, understanding the interplay between MMEJ and PARP inhibitors iscritical. While PARP1 is proposed to promote MMEJ, PARP regulates numerous aspects of DSBrepair, and therefore, its overall impact on MMEJ levels remains unclear. For instance, the effectof PARP inhibition on DSB end-resection, a critical step of MMEJ, remains controversial.
Utilizing a DNA repair reporter, we assessed MMEJ levels following PARPi treatmentand PARP knockout. We found that PARP inhibition leads to elevated MMEJ levels. We thencreated PARP1 and PARP2 knockout cells and found that MMEJ upregulation was dependent onPARP1, not PARP2. Reconstitution of PARP1 and PARP2 in respective knock-outs demonstratedthat PARP1 was sufficient to decrease MMEJ levels. We then hypothesized that PARP1 couldincrease MMEJ by promoting long-range resection. We knocked out two genes involved inlong-range resection, EXO1 and WRN, and assessed the effect of PARPi on cells. We found thatboth EXO1-KO and WRN-KO clones had increased MMEJ levels following PAPRi treatment,demonstrating that PARPi is not increasing MMEJ by modulation long-range resection. Altogether, this data demonstrates that both PARP1 and PARP2 are dispensable for repair of double-stranded DNA breaks by MMEJ. This insight bears significant implications for developing combination therapies of MMEJ and PARP inhibitors in treating certain cancers.</p
Bridging the Divide: Integrating Artistry and Pedagogy in Culturally Relevant Artist-Teachers
Conducting is a multifaceted art that requires the conductor to embody roles as both musical artist and teacher. When one of these roles is emphasized at the expense of the other or entirely in deficit, it may compromise musical, educational, and communal integrity. Maintaining a balance between these roles is essential, as to successfully conduct, one must blend elements of informed musical interpretation, physical technique, pedagogy and education, communication and leadership, program planning and vision, and various other responsibilities.
In a typical music education program, aspiring music teachers have only four to five years of undergraduate study to practice and refine these pillars to a level that supports artistic excellence and effective instruction in the classroom. This limited timeframe presents a significant challenge: developing proficiency across multiple domains, each of which could constitute a lifelong pursuit toward mastery. In addition, the aspiring artist-teacher must also develop their personal voice, philosophical grounding, understanding of school sociopolitical systems, and the quick adaptability required for real-world classroom scenarios.
Because of this temporal challenge, degree-holding institutions often separate these skills into artistic considerations and educational pedagogy, referred to as applied and general music education courses. In doing so, institutions risk fragmenting student knowledge and unintentionally influencing professional identity. This division in how learning is framed reflects a longstanding dichotomy, artist versus teacher, dating back to the early twentieth century and the origins of music education in American public schools.
This paper argues that the perceived dichotomy between artistry and pedagogy in conducting is both limiting and outdated. It will support this claim through a historical overview of music education, an analysis of higher education structures, and the application of culturally responsive pedagogical frameworks in conducting practice. Instead, it advocates for a unified professional identity integrating musical excellence with an educational vision to foster more holistic, inclusive, and sustainable ensemble environments.
At the center of this discussion is the question of professional identity: what does it mean to be both an artist and an educator in a field that often pressures individuals to choose one path over the other? Confronting this divide will ultimately influence how we train artist-teachers, raise awareness of the systemic problems associated with being professionally unidirectional, reframe how we think about their work, and shape how we empower them to lead in music-making spaces.</p
NEPC Review: The Enrollment Decline Windfall (EdChoice, February 2025)
Most U.S. states use per-pupil funding, so projected declines in school-aged children through 2030 and expanding private school voucher programs have raised concerns about underfunded public schools. An EdChoice report argues these concerns are overstated, claiming that fewer students can mean more resources per student, as funding doesn’t always decline at the same rate as enrollment. However, the report uses an overly simplistic analysis to address a complex issue. It has five key flaws: It oversimplifies district types, ignores structural cost differences, mishandles longitudinal data, makes faulty assumptions about spending benefits, and overlooks how major enrollment declines can reduce services and harm vulnerable students. Overall, the report provides little value to policymakers or state leaders.</p

Stereoselective Oxidative Contractions of Si-Linked Glycomimetics
This thesis describes methods for the synthesis of 1,2-cis Si-linked glycomimetics andoxidative ring contraction of a-Si-linked glycomimetics. The synthesis of 1,2-cis Si-linkedglycomimetics is achieved with exclusive 1,2-cis diastereoselectivity using a umpolungintramolecular aglycone delivery approach. Oxidative ring contractions of a-1,2-cis Si-linkedglycosides were developed to synthesize g-lactones in a single step. The substrate scope of theoxidative contractions extends to a-1,2-cis Si-linked glucose, galactose, lactose and fucose, aswell as other anomeric metalloids, namely boron and germanium.</p
The Fibrotic Tissue Environment in Aged Mice Limits Regeneration by Muscle Stem Cells
Skeletal muscle function is impaired with age, leading to muscle wasting and slow repair after an injury. Furthermore, age is associated with a loss of skeletal muscle stem cell proliferation and self-renewal. Targeting FGFR1 or downstream signaling pathways rescues the proliferation of muscle stem cells from aged mice. Particularly, activating FGFR1 in vivo in muscle stem cells from aged mice rejuvenates stem cell numbers and transcripts. Surprisingly, activating FGFR1 for 30 days prior to muscle injury does not improve age-associated muscle regeneration. It is possible that resident muscle cell-type groups impair muscle repair or limit the regenerative capacity of muscle stem cells. Thus, I analyzed single-cell and single-nuclear RNA-sequencing data and asked, what cell-extrinsic pathways might limit muscle regeneration by rejuvenated muscle stem cells? Significant signaling interactions were inferred from other cell type groups expressing collagens I, IV, and VI to muscle stem cells in uninjured, aged mouse skeletal muscle. I compared immunoreactivity and validated that collagens I, IV, and VI are upregulated in aged mice and collagen deposition persists in the presence of rejuvenated muscle stem cells. After injury, collagen increases less significantly in aged mice, as compared to young mice. To understand if the aged mouse muscle extracellular matrix is sufficient to limit regeneration by rejuvenated stem cells, I decellularized and lyophilized skeletal muscle to develop young or aged mouse muscle matrix-coated coverslips. Then, I cultured muscle stem cells from young mice and saw less proliferation on aged mouse muscle matrix-coated coverslips.
