    Adding Libraries to the Equation: Mathematical Sciences’ Underutilization of Academic Librarians

    Academic librarians do not engage with all disciplinary departments equally. Despite equal or even greater efforts, some departments are less responsive to librarian outreach. One such department is mathematics. To understand mathematics departments&rsquo; relationships with their academic librarians, three mathematics librarians created a 20-question survey that was disseminated to mathematics faculty, instructors, and instructional staff in the United States and Canada. Of the 188 survey participants, more than a third reported that they never engage with their librarians, approximately half only do so only occasionally, and a mere eight percent of participants collaborated with librarians to provide information literacy instruction (IL) to their students.Participant responses revealed that mathematics faculty and instructors find librarian support unnecessary, often do not understand what librarians do or what services they offer, and have limited time to include IL in course curricula. Participants also provided information about the resources they use for instruction, the university services and centers they use for their research, and the resources they would like to have in their library.</p

    The Small Worlds of Childhood: Philosophy, Poetics, and the Queer Temporalities of Early Life

    One of Austrian realist writer Adalbert Stifter&rsquo;s most popular stories was aChristmas tale &ldquo;Bergkristall&rdquo; (&ldquo;Rock Crystal&rdquo;), published in 1852 as part of acollection of stories subtitled, &ldquo;a gift for a special occasion,&rdquo; marking the book&rsquo;simagined role in the holiday celebration.2 The story begins with a narratorunfolding a classic mountain village holiday scene&mdash;a &ldquo;set piece,&rdquo; as MartinSwales calls it&mdash;that moves from the church calendar to village activities inthe crisp nighttime air, before eventually settling into a homey interior sceneof children on Christmas Eve.3 Much like our contemporary conventions forthe holiday in the United States, Stifter&rsquo;s opening depiction of gift-giving in-volves two tales: one of the parents, who orchestrate the appearance of giftsand trimmings, and one of the children, who encounter and delight in theappearance of these new objects. Stifter&rsquo;s two views of Christmas, we mightsay, appear like a parallax&mdash;two observational standpoints, though orientedtoward the same matter, that appear differently. He deploys his poetic realisttechnique in a way that emphasizes this difference as the temporality of expe-rience: While parents enjoy the children&rsquo;s activities in a nostalgic way, theexperience of childhood by children themselves is profoundly bound up withthe present time of enjoyment:Lights are lit, usually a great many of them, often little candles poisedon the handsome green boughs of fir or spruce tree in the middle of the room.The children are not allowed to come until the sign is giventhat the Holy Child has been there, and has left behind the presentshe brought with him. Then the door is opened and the little ones arelet inside, and in the marvelous glimmering splendor they see, hang-ing from the tree or arrayed on the table, things that far surpass all thevisions of their imagination, things which they dare not touch andwhich at last, once they have received them, they carry about in theirlittle arms all evening, and take to bed with them.4Although the tale&rsquo;s plot will take a threatening turn, as the narrative followsits two child-protagonists Sanna and Konrad through a blizzard on their wayback from grandmother&rsquo;s house, the opening vision of the holiday nonethelessinvites the reader to tarry in the cozy microcosm of the home, where the coldwinter is only softly perceptible through the windows:5 &ldquo;When the next daycomes, Christmas Day, it seems so festive to them when they stand in the warmparlor attired in their finest clothes . . . when there&rsquo;s a festive midday meal,better than on any other day of the year, and . . . [s]cattered throughout theparlor, on a little chair or on the bench or on the windowsill, lie the presentsof the evening before, magical but already more familiar.&rdquo;6 With an eye to theordinary details, the narrator sets the &ldquo;festival of the home&rdquo; in parallel withthe Holy Child in a curious way. In the nineteenth century, the Austrian andsouthern German figure of the Christ Child (Christkind) was the traditionalunseen bringer of gifts, often imagined as an angelic childlike figure,7 but in&ldquo;Rock Crystal&rdquo; Stifter instead describes the figure as something belonging tothe children&rsquo;s visible world: namely, &ldquo;a joyful, shining festive thing&rdquo; (&ldquo;ein heit-eres gl&auml;nzendes feierliches Ding&rdquo;).8 This brief narrative sequence recasts thestory of Christmas as the familiar narrative of the transfiguration of the giftedobject into ordinary experience: from the eruptive delight in finally getting toopen a present, to the seamless absorption of that treasured surprise into thebackground of the child&rsquo;s quotidian world</p

    The Art and Science of Bees and Bugs: A Lens of Interdisciplinary Insect Importance

    Art and science are often viewed as separate disciplines, yet both rely on observation, experimentation, and representation. While the advantages of interdisciplinary collaboration are well-recognized, few studies focus on the effectiveness of photography as both a scientific tool and an artistic medium. This project integrates image-based biological research on a honey bee parasite, the Varroa mite (Varroa destructor), with artistic insect photography to advance scientific understanding and public appreciation of insects. Using three-dimensional X-ray imaging, long-term behavioral recording, and laser-scanning confocal microscopy, I investigated Varroa mite reproductive methods. This led to the first measurements of mite and egg volumes, insights into mite rearing, and initial trials in tracking protein movement between mites and bees. In parallel, I created macro and microscopic insect photographs of specimens from CU Boulder&rsquo;s Entomology Collections. I categorized subjects into ecological roles: pollinators, predators, parasitoids, decomposers, and herbivores. The final photographs were printed, framed, and displayed in a public photography exhibition outside of the Entomology Collections. Feedback, awards, and the general outcomes of the exhibit supported the effectiveness of art when done with science in mind. As a whole, these findings emphasized the benefits of integrating art and science through photography, particularly in doing research, education, and outreach. Expanding interdisciplinary collaborations in art and science will create more accessible and thought-provoking ways for diverse audiences to engage with these disciplines.&nbsp;</p

    Measuring Non-Gaussian Magic in Fermions

    Classically hard-to-simulate quantum states, or "magic" states, are prerequisites to quantum advantage, highlighting an apparent separation between classically and quantumly tractable problems. Classically simulable states such as Clifford circuits on stabilizer states, free bosonic states, free fermions, and matchgate circuits are all in some sense Gaussian. While free bosons and fermions arise from quadratic Hamiltonians, recent works have demonstrated that bosonic and qudit systems converge to Gaussians and stabilizers under convolution. In this work, we similarly identify convolution for fermions and find efficient measures of non-Gaussian magic in pure fermionic states. We demonstrate that three natural notions for the Gaussification of a state&mdash;(1) the Gaussian state with the same covariance matrix, (2) the fixed point of convolution, and (3) the closest Gaussian in relative entropy&mdash;coincide by proving a central limit theorem for fermionic systems. We then utilize the violation of Wick's theorem and the matchgate identity to quantify non-Gaussian magic in addition to a SWAP test.</p

    April media coverage of climate change or global warming in newspapers around the globe dipped 4% from March 2025. Furthermore, coverage in April 2025 dropped 16% from April 2024. Figure 1 shows trends in newspaper media coverage at the global scale &ndash; organized into seven geographical regions around the world &ndash; across 21 years, from January 2004 through April 2025. The politics of climate change &ndash; driven in the United States (US) context with reactions in Canada &ndash; fueled increased media coverage in North America and more specifically in US print media, with the number climate change or global warming stories growing in April from the previous month across all outlets we monitor except for in the&nbsp;Wall Street Journal&nbsp;(-33%):&nbsp;Washington Post&nbsp;(+33%),&nbsp;New York Times&nbsp;(+18),&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;(+26%), and&nbsp;USA Today&nbsp;(more than tripling).</p
