The literary topos of the primus inventor is the boastful claim by some writers to be the first cultivators of a specific literary genre, a certain metric rhythm, or a particular theme. In Latin literature, this topos is very frequently paired with one or more of the following four literary motifs: the immense “challenge” of the poetic venture, the “daring” to embark upon such a feat, the “novelty” of the subject matter (novitas rerum), or the great “importance” of the topic at hand (magnitudo rerum). This paper examines the use of the primus inventor topos by these eight Latin poets: Ennius, Lucretius, Virgil, Horace, Propertius, Ovid, Manilius, and Phaedrus.
Ovid and the poetry he composed during his exile, Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto, are responsible for the creation of what we might call a “poetics of exile.” After him, many poets from different literatures reflected their exiles in their poetry, using the same themes, the same strategy, the same topoi, some directly influenced by him, others simply because their situations were similar. Li Bai, one of the greatest Chinese poets, who lived a wandering life that he himself came to consider an exile, also dedicated several poems to his condition. The aim of this work is to point out a set of coincidences and similarities between Li Bai's poetry, in relation to this theme, and Ovid's poetics of exile, although it is clear that he could not have been influenced by the Latin poet, whose poetry was totally ignored in China at that time.
O pensamento "Moderno" do Arquiteto Romano
This essay examines the remarkable quality and undeniable modernity of thought and practice demonstrated by Roman architects. Using the Flavian Forum and the Flavio-Trajanic Baths of the South - two public buildings in the Romanized city of Conimbriga - as case studies, it contrasts these examples with three projects and works from later periods in Architectural History. The analysis is structured around three themes: The module as a tool for composition, The wall as a point of transformation, and Thinking like the ancients.
The goal is to show that architects today still approach their work in ways akin to roman architects, as many of the core challenges in Architecture remain fundamentally unchanged.

In José Cardoso Pires’ work, the conflict between libertines and marialvas is definitely a central topic. Unlike marialvas, who embody conservatism and the suffocating moralism of Portuguese society, libertines adopt a defiant stance against prevailing moral norms, challenging the established order by asserting themselves as lovers of both sex and knowledge. Using as its basis, therefore, libertines as a revolutionary symbol, far from viewing them as immoral and undisciplined beings, this study examines three short stories from Jogos de Azar (Games of Chance) aiming to follow the path to libertinism through three female characters. This piece comprehends their conscience about the hostile position they occupy in a patriarchal society and their consequent pursuit for personal pleasure as a revolutionary act. In Cardoso Pires’ books, love is not only subversive, but also a form of revolution.
This paper examines the categories proposed by José Cardoso Pires in the essay Cartilha do Marialva (1963) through the counterpoint between two central figures in O Delfim (1968): Tomás Palma Bravo and the writer figure, who simultaneously fulfills the roles of author and narrator within the novel’s plot. The central argument focuses on the author-narrator figure, analyzed within the framework of the libertine individuality category outlined in the Cartilha do Marialva, which operates as the perfect counterpoint to the marialvismo embodied by Tomás. The analysis emphasizes the pivotal role of the literary institution in shaping the tension between these two interlocutors and in structuring the novel itself as a hypothesis for mythologizing the engineer’s image. This mythologization, in turn, underpins the construction of the author-narrator as an alternative locus of power through memory and literary transfiguration.
Among the texts that provide ‘entrances’ to the mythical-historical-artistic discourse of the White City, Lisbon – Livro de Bordo (1997), by José Cardoso Pires, and A Cidade de Ulisses (2011), by Teolinda Gersão, stand out. Both dialogue with the visual arts to develop rescue and resilience strategies against the city’s disappearance as a place of belonging and memory. They demand an in-between place that can save ‘senses’ of Lisbon in the face of its mischaracterization by tourist branding and urbanistic policies: in the first case, through a book conceived as a complex artefact of text and image in which a periegetic subject connects the urban landscape with individual and collective memory as well as artefacts, in the broadest sense, seeking to capture the ‘Lisbon language’; in the second, through a novel that narrates a relationship between visual artists who create an exhibition dedicated to Lisbon. Love becomes a transversal category that results from critical reflection on belonging and otherness.
