Segurança e coeficiente de segurança em geotecnia
No full textAttention is called to the great diversity of values of the safety factor used in Geotechnique, it being emphasized that such a diversity does not necessarily imply differences in safety, i.e. different probabilities of failure, for the corresponding works. The influence of the magnitude of the shearing-failure surface over the value of the safety factor is then considered and, by means of an example, it is shown that as that magnitude increases the safety factor corresponding to a given safety decreases. Finally in a study of brittle soils, which present a peak strength, it is shown that higher safety factors have to be adopted for taking that strength into account in the stability computations, the conclusion then being that peak strength need not be considered unless it markedly exceeds residual strength.Chama-se a atenção para a grande diversidade de valores de coeficientes de segurança praticados em Geotecnia e salienta-se que isso não significa necessariamente diferentes seguranças nas respetivas obras, isto é, diferentes probabilidades de ruína. Analisa-se a influência do tamanho da superfície de rotura por corte no valor do coeficiente de segurança e mostra-se com um exemplo que à medi da que esse tamanho aumenta menor será o coeficiente de segurança correspondente a uma dada segurança. Analisa- se depois o caso de terrenos frágeis, que exibem resistência de pico, mostrando-o que a eventual consideração dessa resistência nos cálculos de estabilidade implica a adoção de maiores coeficientes de segurança; e conclui-se que, por essa razão, tais cálculos só terão justificação se a resistência de pico for acentuadamente superior à resistência residual
