Language for the Fluid, Multiple, Unified Self
This is the text of a keynote address delivered online at the 2023 Electronic Literature Organization Conference, Overcoming Divides: Electronic Literature and Social Change hosted by the Universidade de Coimbra and held at different venues in Coimbra, Portugal and online from 12 to 15 July 2023. This talk is about how I am using my artistic practice to look for nonviolent language. It might be more accurate to say “create” nonviolent language, because I think it’s a practice. I’m trying to create situations in which people have access to use language in new ways, to create their own meanings, and to have others hear them. In this talk, I’ll share some of what I’m working on, as well as past projects. I’ll give some background to my artistic research, suggest a few characteristics that I imagine for nonviolent language, and present different projects that I’m using to investigate these characteristics.
What the Body Remembers: VR as Site of Preservation in Memory Eternal |
Our paper discusses a VR piece designed for Quest 2, Memory Eternal: Book of Mourning, that was exhibited in the ELO Media Arts Festival in 2023. Our work, named after the Ukrainian Orthodox prayer for the dead, immerses viewers in a space of remembrance. The piece reflects on grief at two scales — personal and collective — touching on topics like war, pandemics, and family. The paper and the work submitted for exhibition are aligned with the ELO 2023 themes of the role of literature in social change asking, in the wake of overlapping global crises, what do we want to remember and how? We make a tour to the project with its dream-like landscape of medieval ruins populated with ten distinct electronic literature pieces that meditate on mourning, grief, and awakening tonew futures. We will discuss the collaborative methods we use to create this work that are grounded in care ethics and explain how they become part of the broader meaning of the work. We then draw from memory studies to elaborate on how the form and themes of Memory Eternal serve as a response to crisis, a salvo for loss, and a promise to keep memory alive.O nosso artigo discute uma peça de realidade virtual projetada para a Quest 2, Memory Eternal: Book of Mourning, que esteve em exibição no ELO Media Arts Festival.

“Year X of the National Revolution” — Salazarist palingenetic myth in the Diário da Manhã
This paper contributes to the debate surrounding the extent to which Salazarism constituted a fascist ideology by analysing the discourses in an edition of the Diário da Manhã — official organ of the National Union, the only legal political party during the Estado Novo — published on 28 May 1936. This edition of the Diário commemorated 10 years of the May 28 1926 coup which installed the Military Dictatorship, later transformed into the Estado Novo with the 1933 Constitution. This article adopts Roger Griffin’s palingenetic myth analytical framework, which defines fascism in ideal-typological terms with reference to its discursive content, while also incorporating aspects of Emilio Gentile’s notion of the sacralisation of politics, to afford a more nuanced understanding of Salazarism’s ideological foundations. The analysis finds that the discourses in this issue of the Diário exhibit a degree of conformity with Griffin’s definition of a fascist ideology yet with several caveats, concluding that Salazarism can best be described as a para-fascist ideology predicated on a specifically Portuguese configuration of a palingenetic myth rendered via elements borrowed from Catholic discourse to confer Estado Novo politics with sacred dimensions.

“Making treasure in heaven”: family chapels as a manifestation of the social power of urban elites (Portugal, 14th-17th centuries)
This article aims to analyse the family chapels founded by the urban elites of four Portuguese cities – Évora, Lisbon, Porto and Santarém – between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. Beginning by presenting a sociological characterisation of the founders and their families, according to their social and professional status, this will be followed by a definition of the profile of these individuals, based on the relationship they established with their ancestors and successors at the time of their souls’ suffrage. Lastly, the family chapels will come in to focus as a manifestation of the lineage’s memorialisation and an exhibition of the founders’ economic and social power, further to the investment they made in ornamentation and architecture. As such, an understanding of how the urban elites used these institutions in the context of the processes of social climbing they aimed for and how the chapels reflect the awareness of the power they achieved
Sicilian Mediaevalism: The Refashioning of the Sicilian Vespers during the Risorgimento and the Contemporary Age
The article addresses the complex issue of Sicilian medievalism as it relates to the reinterpretation of the Sicilian Vespers during the Risorgimento. From a historiographical perspective, this phenomenon is of particular interest, as it allows for an examination of how the Sicilian ruling and revolutionary classes during the uprisings of 1820, the 1830s, and 1848 reappropriated and instrumentalized the medieval past to serve their political aims. The historical works of nineteenth-century Sicilian intellectuals thus contributed to the construction of a romanticized image of medieval Sicily – variously portrayed as the island of powerful emirs, a realm of peace and religious tolerance under the Normans, or the site of miraculous popular uprisings such as the Vespers. These historiographical interpretations, imbued with strong patriotic and identity-forming overtones, have significantly shaped twentieth-century historical discourse and continue to exert influence today, both in popular historical narratives and in the broader collective imagination
