Path Analysis on the Effects of Psychosocial Development, Nutritional Status, and Family Acceptance on Learning Achievement in Autistic Children, in Jember, East Java
Background: The prevalence of autism has been increasing worldwide annually. Autistic children are at higher risk of physical, mental, and intellectual disorders. However, autistic children may have above average academic achievement. With support from family, teacher, and society, autistic children can gain maximum academic achievement. This study aimed to determine the effects of psychosocial development, nutritional status, and family acceptance, on learning achievement in autistic children, in Jember, East Java.Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at Special Elementary School in Jember, East Java. A total sample of 50 autistic students were collected for this study by exhaustive sampling. The dependent variable was learning achievement. The independent variables were nutritional status, psychosocial development, and family acceptance. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by path analysis.Results: Learning achievement was directly affected by psychosocial development (b= 0.36; SE= 0.13;p= 0.005) and nutritional status (b= 1.42; SE= 0.65; p= 0.029). Nutritional status was positively affected by strong family acceptance (b= 0.07; SE= 0.01; p<0.001).Conclusion: Learning achievement of autistic children is affected by psychosocial development and nutritional status.Keywords: learning achievement, psychosocial development, nutritional status, family acceptance, path analysisCorrespondence: Tutut Okta Diana. Life Course Epidemiology on the Determinants of Stunting in Children Under Five in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara
Background: Stunting remains a challenging global health issue. It is estimated by Global Nutrition Report that 155 million children were stunted in 2017. Stunting is associated with an underdeveloped brain, with long-lasting harmful consequences, including diminished mental ability and learning capacity, poor school performance in childhood, reduced earnings and increased risks of nutrition-related chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in future. This study aimed to examine the determinants of stunting in children under five in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with a case control design. The study was carried out in 31 posyandus (integrated family health posts) in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, from April to May 2018.A sample of 186 children was selected by fixed disease sampling. The dependent variable was stunting. The independent variables were low birthweight (LBW), birth length, exclusive breastfeeding, history of infection disease, maternal age at pregnancy, maternal middle upper arm circumference (MUAC), and family income. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multilevel logistic regression run in Stata 13.Results: The risk of stunting increased with LBW (b= 3.51; 95% CI= -0.28 to 7.31; p= 0.069), maternal age at pregnancy <20 or ?35 years (b= 2.73; 95% CI= 0.38 to 5.42; p=0.047), andhistory of infectious disease (b= 3.70; 95% CI= 0.84 to 6.56; p=0.011). The risk of stunting reduced with high family income (b= -2.15; 95% CI= -4.37 to 0.61; p=0.057), birth length (b= -4.17; 95% CI= -7.42 to -0.91; p=0.012), exclusive breastfeeding (b= -3.24; 95% CI= -5.63to -0.85; p=0.008), and maternal MUAC ?23.5cm (b= -4.53; 95% CI= -8.09to -0.97; p=0.013). Posyandu had a contextual effect on the incidence of child stunting with ICC= 15.00%.Conclusion: The risk of stunting increases with LBW, maternal age at pregnancy <20 or ?35 years, and history of infectious disease. The risk of stunting reduces with high family income, birth length, exclusive breastfeeding, and maternal MUAC. The Effect of Biological, Social, Economic, and Nutritional Factors on Low Birth Weight: A New Path Analysis Evidence from Madiun Hospital, East Java, Indonesia
Background: Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major cause of death and illness in infants. This study aimed to analyze the effects of biological, social, economic, and nutritional factors on LBW at Madiun General Hospital, East Java.Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with a case-control design. The study was conducted at Madiun General Hospital, East Java, from January to December 2017. A sample of 200 newborn babies were selected for this study using fixed disease sampling, consisting of 50 babies with low birth weight and 150 control infants with normal birth weight. The dependent variable was birth weight. The independent variables were maternal age, education, parity, maternal nutritional status, maternal employment, family income, anemia, and birth space. Clinical data were taken from medical record. The data of other variables were collected by questionnaire. Path analysis was employed for data analysis.Results: The risk of LBW increased with anemia (b= 1.09; CI 95%= 0.27 to 1.91; p= 0.009), multiparity (b= 1.73; CI 95%= 0.28 to 2.06; p= 0.010), and age 35 years (b= 1.41; CI 95%= 0.24 to 2.57; p= 0.018). The risk of LBW decreased with good maternal nutritional status (b= -1.49; CI 95%= -2.32 to -0.65; p< 0,001), maternal education ?high school (b= -1.05; CI 95%= -1.88 to -0.21; p= 0.014), and wide birth space (b= -1.06; CI 95%= -2.24 to 0.11 p= 0.076). Maternal employment and family income had indirect effect on the risk of LBW.Conclusion: The risk of LBW is affected by anemia, parity, maternal age <20 years and ?35 years, poor maternal nutritional status, low maternal education, and narrow birth space.Keywords: low birth weight, biological factor, social factor, economic factorCorrespondence
Prenatal Factors Associated with the Risk of Stunting: A Multilevel Analysis Evidence from Nganjuk, East Java
Background: Globally, one in four children under the age of five suffers from stunting. Stunting is associated with an underdeveloped brain, with long-lasting harmful consequences, including diminished mental ability and learning capacity, poor school performance in childhood, reduced earnings and increased risks of nutrition-related chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in future. This study aimed to analyze prenatal factors associated with the risk of stunting in Nganjuk, East Java, using a multilevel analysis.Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with a case control design. The study was conducted at 25 posyandus (integrated health posts) in Nganjuk, East Java, from June 03 to July 07, 2018. Posyandu was selected by stratified random sampling. A sample of 225 children under five was selected by fixed disease sampling, consisting of 75 stunted children and 150 normal children. The dependent variable was stunting. The independent variables were birth length, maternal height, and family size. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multilevel logistic regression run on Stata 13.Results: The risk of stunting increased with maternal height <150 cm (b= 2.59; 95% CI= -0.75 to 4.42; p= 0.006), birth length <48 cm (b=4.17; 95% CI= 2.19 to 6.15; p<0.001), and large family size (b= 2.31; 95% CI= 0.34 to 4.29; p= 0.022). Posyandu had a contextual effect on stunting with ICC= 63.39%.Conclusion: The risk of stunting increases with maternal height <150 cm, birth length <48 cm, and large family size. Background: Stunting is a form of nutritional deficiency associated with delayed of children growth and development. Stunting is a lack of linear development due to long-term malnutrition. This study aimed to examine factors associated with stunting in children under-five in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.Subjects and Method: This was an analytic observational study with a case-control design. The study was conducted in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. A sample of 200 children under five consisting of 100 stunting children and 100 normal children was selected for this study by fixed disease sampling. The dependent variable was stunting. The independent variables were birth length, maternal education, family income, maternal nutritional intake, maternal middle-upper arm circumference (MUAC), child nutritional intake, and the number of children. The data were collected by questionnaire. The data were analyzed by path analysis.Results: The risk of stunting directly increased with child nutritional intake less than recommended nutritional allowance (b= 1.61; 95% CI= 0.86 to 2.36; p<0.001), birth length <48 cm (b= 2.13; 95% CI= 0.95 to 3.31; p<0.001), and low current maternal education (b= 1.96; 95% CI= 1.21 to 2.72; p<0.001). The risk of stunting was indirectly and significantly influenced by family income during gestation, the number of children, maternal height, maternal MUAC, family support, maternal education during gestation, and maternal nutrient intake during gestation.Conclusion: The risk of stunting directly increases with child nutritional intakes than recommended nutritional allowance, birth length <48 cm, and low current maternal education. Factors Associated with Use of Intra-Uterine Device in Women of Reproductive Age in Boyolali, Central Java
Background: Family planning is a key strategy for reduction of maternal mortality. Family planning aims to control birth in order to control population growth. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), which include intra-uterine device (IUD), are the most effective methods of birth control. Studies into factors affecting the uptake of IUD was lacking in Indonesia. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with use of IUD in women of reproductive age in Boyolali, Central Java, using multilevel analysis model and Theory of Planned Behavior.Subjects and Method: This was a case control study carried out in 25 posyandus (integrated community health posts) in Boyolali, Central Java, from April to June 2018. A sample of 200 women was selected by simple random sampling. The dependent variable was IUD use. The independent variables were education, family income, intention, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behaviour control, and husband support. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multilevel logistic regression on Stata 13.Results: IUD use among women reproductive age increased with higher maternal education (b= 4.06; 95% CI= 0.68 to 7.44; p=0.019), higher family income (b= 3.90; 95% CI= 1.67to 7.64; p=0.041), positive attitude (b= 4.54; 95% CI= 0.52 to 8.55; p=0.027), positive subjective norm (b= 3.06; 95% CI= 0.01to 6.10; p= 0.049), strong perceived behaviour control (b= 3.40; 95% CI= -0.04to 6.85; p=0.053), strong intention (b= 3.18; 95% CI= -0.06to 6.41; p= 0.054), and strong husband support (b= 4.28; 95% CI= 0.01to 7.44; p= 0.050). Posyandu had a contextual effect on IUD use with ICC= 32.10%.Conclusion: IUD use among women reproductive age increases with higher maternal education, higher family income, positive attitude, positive subjective norm, strong perceived behaviour control, strong intention, and strong husband support. The Effect of Parenting Style, Bilingual School, Social Environment, on Speech and Language Development in Preschool Children in Surakarta, Central Java
Background: Childhood speech and language development is considered an important predictor of their future achievement. This study aimed to analyze the effect of parenting style, bilingual school, social environment, on speech and language development in preschool children in Surakarta, Central Java. Subjects and Method: This was an analytic and observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at 25 preschools in Surakarta, Central Java, from February March 2018. A sample of 200 preschool children was selected by simple random sampling from 25 preschools selected by stratified random sampling. The dependent variable was speech and language develop-ment. The independent variables were sex, nutritional status, parental education, parenting style, family income, bilingual school, and social environment. The data of speech and language development were measured by pre-screening development questionnaire. Other variables were collected by questionnaire. The data were analyzed by a multilevel logistic regression using Stata 13.Results: Speech and language development increased with age (b= 2.03; 95% CI= 0.38 to 3.68; p= 0.016), nutritional status (b= 2.44; 95% CI= 0.38 to 4.08; p= 0.003), maternal education (b= 1.50; 95% CI= 0.14 to 2.86; p= 0.031), democratic parenting style (b= 2.76; 95% CI= 1.16 to 4.08; p<0.001), family income (b= 1.69; 95% CI= 0.15 to 3.23; p= 0.031), bilingual school(b= -4.46; CI= -6.53 to -2.39; p= 0.001), and social environment (b= 1.80; 95% CI= 0.10 to 3.50; p= 0.038). Intra-class correlation= 28.06% indicating considerable contextual effect of preschool. Conclusion: Speech and language development increases with age, nutritional status, maternal education, parenting style, family income, bilingual school, and social environment.Keywords: speech and language development, parenting style, bilingual school, pre-school childrenCorrespondence
