Światło wiedzy, światło pamięci: Recenzja książki Sroka, Ł.T. (2024). Lili Haber. Drugie pokolenie po Holokauście w Izraelu. Narodziny nowego narodu.
Criticizing Language: Dangers, Deficiencies and Conceptual Engineering
In this paper, I consider a number of philosophical critiques of language and describe how their criticisms compare. In particular, I discuss how the current trend in the philosophy of language known as conceptual engineering fits into this tradition and to what extent it can be considered a critique of language per se, rather than a method of addressing dissatisfactions with certain individual terms. I suggest that criticisms can be divided allegations of two types of shortcoming: dangers and deficiencies. In the category of dangers, I consider some well-known examples from the history of philosophy, and suggest that they partly rely on an unexpressed from of Linguistic Determinism. I then move on to the deficiencies highlighted in the critiques offered by Wittgenstein in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, and Mauthner in his Contributions to a Critique of Language. These form a pair of apparently opposite ways of considering the flaws in language, but I shall argue that they have much in common. I then describe the conceptual engineering movement and its mission to provide ‘improved’ meanings of certain terms. I show that implicit in the assumptions behind conceptual engineering are criticisms of language of both varieties – current meanings are seen as dangerous as they represent a threat to social justice, and the system of allocation of meaning is seen as flawed and in need of external intervention
Epitafia i tablice pamiątkowe ufundowane w kościele i klasztorze oo. Bernardynów we Lwowie w XIX i XX wieku. Inicjatorzy, realizacja projektów i problematyka dokumentacyjna
To date, in the popularisation of knowledge and in research into the history of the Church of the Bernardine Fathers in Lviv, much attention is paid to the general history and artistic qualities of the monument. In the case of epitaphs and memorial plaques, attention is paid primarily to their state of preservation and appearance, while information on the circumstances of their creation and foundation is omitted. This article fills this gap and, on the basis of the surviving archival documentation, brings closer the circumstances of their erection, the names of the founders and the characteristics of the documentation with regard to epitaphs and plaques made in the 19th and 20th centuries. So far, this aspect and the documents have not been analysed and published.W dotychczasowej popularyzacji w\iedzy oraz w badaniach naukowych nad dziejami kościoła oo.
Distance Learning as a Means of Innovative Teaching for University Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Research objectives and problems: The aim of the study was to investigate students’ opinions on distance education. The following research questions were posed: 1: How effective was the communication between lecturers and students? 2: What problems did students encounter during remote education? 3: What were the advantages of remote education in the opinion of students? 4: How did students assess the overall quality of remote education?
Research methods: The study employed a questionnaire developed by the researchers to gather the views of students about distance education. The questionnaire was informed by a literature review examining student attitudes toward remote learning. Based on the research questions, the questionnaire items were revised and compiled into a comprehensive item pool.
A brief description of the context of the presented issue: Distance education requires a reorganization of the teaching and learning process, particularly concerning the roles of both teachers and students. The purpose of this article is to contribute to pedagogical knowledge by discussing innovative approaches adopted at the Pedagogy Department of the National Education Commission University in Krakow during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Research findings and their influence on the development of pedagogical science: The widespread adoption of distance learning was initially fueled by the urgent need for adaptation measures during the pandemic. However, the demand for new teaching models is also a response to rapid societal shifts, increasing digitalization, and evolving student expectations. The integration of modern educational methods at the university level is becoming not only a necessity, but also a challenge that requires updating curricula to meet current needs and technological advancements.
Conclusions and/or recommendations: The findings indicate that students are receptive to modern forms of education, in which digital competences play an important role. This study, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, is not exhaustive; it merely serves as a starting point for further reflection and analysis. It would be interesting to carry out a similar follow-up study to compare student opinions from different time periods

The school, as an organisation of collective life in which the preparation of the student to create the future takes place, is an ideal space for developing the concepts of STEAM and education for sustainable development (ESD), also known as education for the future. Both approaches are developing rapidly and are considered the future of 21st century education. In today’s schools, however, attention is not always paid to the skills that are so desperately needed to cope with the current reality which is full of haste and changes that are difficult to predict. Nowadays, one can see a growing need to develop the tenets of an effective concept of sustainable development (SD), as well as education that would be responsible for preparing generations for its implementation. STEAM and ESD, as educational concepts, aim at equipping students with skills, knowledge and competencies, and at encouraging them to take action and commit to a more sustainable life. The discussion of modernising education is invariably linked to reforming it, and the need for modernisation is permanently embedded in the condition of schools. What direction should these reforms take? What is at the heart of school modernisation? We can ask more of such questions, but, as J. Delors points out, the fundamental direction of these changes is determined by the future, and we must “think about our future and build it together” (Delors, 1998).We invite you to read and seek inspiration for effective interactions.
The study aims to address whether the rapid development of the Internet and social media has significantly influenced and altered behaviors related to seeking information about theatrical offerings. The article focuses on the information activities of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow, analyzing its social media presence and surveying its audience. The research findings demonstrate that the Internet and social media have significantly influenced and continue to shape changes in how viewers search for information about theatrical events.
This article discusses the organizational aspects, proceedings, and political significance of the stay of the Elector of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, in Opole from December 15, 1733, to January 3, 1734. This episode, important for both the history of the city and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, has been largely overlooked in historiography. Yet, at the turn of 1733 and 1734, the visit of the future King of Poland to Opole was widely discussed across Europe, with reports about it appearing in newspapers published in Austria, the German Empire, Russia, and Great Britain. The article draws upon these press reports, as well as travel accounts of the Elector, his wife Maria Josepha, and the Saxon court, logistical documents, correspondence, and financial records housed in Saxon, Austrian, and Opole state archives.W artykule omówione zostały sprawy organizacyjne, przebieg i znaczenie polityczne pobytu elektora saskiego Fryderyka Augusta w Opolu w dniach 15 grudnia 1733 r. – 3 stycznia 1734 r.
The dialogue between the Church and culture was notably advanced by Karol Wojtyla, first as the bishop of Krakow and later as Pope John Paul II. In 1982, he established the Pontifical Council for Culture. John Paul II not only aligned himself with artists but also assumed the role of their spiritual guide. This article explores the ongoing dialogue Wojtyla led, both as a bishop and as Pope, through his papal pilgrimages to Poland, his meetings with cultural figures in Rome and across the globe, and his programmatic address at UNESCO, culminating in his Letter to Artists. Today, this dialogue remains vital and increasingly relevant, underscoring its importance in the life of the Church.Dialog Kościoła i kultury Karol Wojtyła podjął w sposób znaczący jako biskup w Krakowie i później jako papież – m.in. wtedy, kiedy powołał do życia w 1982 roku Papieską Radę ds. Kultury.
The Role of New Technologies in Enhancing Primary School Students’ Language Skills
Research objective and problems: The utilization of modern technologies into various forms for primary English language teaching and learning has progressively become standard practice worldwide, largely because the new generation of students has grown up in a digital era. It is undeniably true that technology continues to play a significant role in contemporary society. In today’s globalized world the English language holds a dominant position influencing nearly every aspect of human life, including education, politics, trade, communication and science. Consequently, the importance of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in schools has increased around the world. For 21st century learners, new technologies are second nature, as children interact with them from early age. Therefore, teaching methods and techniques must be adapted to meet the actual needs of today’s learners.
Research methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental research design, which involves manipulating an independent variable, without randomly assigning participants to conditions or orders of conditions.
Structure of the article: The article begins with an introduction followed by a detailed description of the research methods and findings. It concludes with a discussion of key conclusions and research limitations.
Research findings and their influence on the development of pedagogical science: The study demonstrated incorporating various technological tools enhances the quality of instruction, fosters genuine interest in the subject matter, and encourages student creativity throughout the process of learning a second (foreign) language. Moreover, the use of technology noticeably reduces instances of classroom disruptions caused by students.
Conclusions and/or recommendations: The results clearly indicate that the introduction of new technologies in teaching and learning a new language is much more beneficial than the traditional teaching methods, as evidenced by statistical analysis.
Sex Education and Adolescent Sexual Behavior. Analysis of Historical and Contemporary Data
Research objectives and problems: The article focuses on the issue of students’ sexual activity. The aim is to describe the initiation of sexual intercourse by adolescents (people aged 19 and under). Two main research problems are posed: What changes in the issue of adolescent sexual initiation can be observed by comparing the results of survey data from the early 20th century with the results of surveys from the early 21st century? Do survey data on adolescent sexual initiation correlate with statistics from the Central Statistical Office on the number of teenage pregnancies?
Research methods: The study is based on a comparative analysis of a wide range of scientific publications, reports and statistical data on adolescent sexual behavior over the years. Survey data from the late 19th century to the present are analyzed, which makes it possible to track long-term trends and identify significant changes in youth behavior.
Structure of the article:
Introduction
Evolving Perceptions of Youth Sexuality
Review of the Results of Survey Research on Adolescent Sexual Initiation (1898-2019)
Age of sexual initiation
From initiation to parenthood - teenage pregnancy statistics in light of CSO statistics
Test results
Research findings and their impact on the development of educational sciences: The results of the study show that since the beginning of the 20th century, there have been significant changes in the sexual initiation of adolescents. The age of sexual initiation for boys at the beginning of the 20th century was higher than at its end, and since the 1970s there has been a steady increase in the number of girls engaging in sexual intercourse before the age of majority. Despite the increase in sexual activity, the number of teenage pregnancies has been steadily decreasing since 2004, suggesting the positive impact of sexual education, greater awareness and responsibility regarding the consequences of sexual intercourse. The findings also indicate that socio-behavioral changes have a substantial impact on adolescent behavior, which should be taken into account when creating educational and health policies.
Conclusions and/or recommendations: Further research is needed to more fully understand the impact of these changes and to develop effective strategies to protect young people from early motherhood and its health and social consequences.
