The article deals with the issue of changes in the translation of emotional expressions and names based on Charles Dickens’ second Christmas book, The Chimes (1844) and its five Polish translations. The official history of the Polish translations begins with an anonymous translation in 1846. The author compares and contrasts two anonymous translations (1846, 1923) with the ones by Maria Kreczowska (1946), Krystyna Tarnowska (1989) and Jerzy Łoziński (2015). The purpose of the article is to present and analyze selected phrases and emotive lexemes naming and expressing feelings observed in the story. In particular, the author focuses on a variety of stylistic procedures affecting the emotionality of the work.

AbstractThis article aims to present the influence of the rich symbolism of the Wild Man, which may have been deliberately used as a significant and complementary element of the message conveyed in the first half of the 15th century Book of Municipal Laws of Głubczyce (Codex Iuris Lubschicensis). The analyzed source is a collection of municipal laws written in German, compiled partly from Latin copies, which, in addition to its elaborate decorations, contains numerous figural scenes. These were created by Johannes de Zittawia, an illuminator active in Silesia and Wrocław, who completed his work at the end of 1421 or in early 1422. The article reviews the existing literature on the manuscript, which was long considered lost, and demonstrates that previous studies have overlooked the symbolic and meaningful layer of the figural representations, viewing them instead as unrelated drôleries (humorous or whimsical illustrations). Furthermore, the article points to the extensive research on the Wild Man in European culture, which has so far been neglected in studies of the Głubczyce manuscript. In the author’s opinion, the Wild Men are an important element that enhances the overall message of the municipal law collection and fit within the characteristic oppositions of the time when the manuscript was created, such as: village – city, codified law – customary law, Christianity – paganism. The conducted comparative analyses lead to the conclusion that in European culture, Wild Men were often seen as figures guiding people towards moral knowledge. They were perceived as embodiments of the primal good embedded in nature, and by living in harmony with it, they served as moral mirrors for those who had not yet encountered the laws codified in legal regulations. The Wild Man is thus a guardian of natural law, or the spirit of the law, which Johannes de Zittawia, the illuminator of the gemstone document currently housed in the State Archives in Opole, the records of the city of Głubczyce (collection no. 9, signature 122), likely intended to convey. Przeprowadzone analizy porównawcze prowadzą do wniosku, że w kulturze europejskiej „dzikim mężom” niejednokrotnie przypadało w udziale kierowanie do ludzi nauk moralnych. 122)

In 1957 was created an organization called Association for the Development of Western Territories (ADWT) which purpose was informing about territories located east of Oder and Lusatian Neisse, which was annexed to Poland after World War II. Association since 1959 had a branch in Higher Pedagogical School in Opole, and also since 1967 in Higher School of Engineering in Opole. Participating students were involved in lectures and conferences devoted to connection of the western land with Polishness before and after World War II. Lecture was also about the problem of the aspiration of the Federal Republic of Germany and its allies to restore these areas to German suzerainty. Students also organized lectures and entertainment events. The activities of both student organizations ceased in 1970 after the dissolution of ADWT.W 1957 r. powstało Towarzystwo Rozwoju Ziem Zachodnich (TRZZ), którego celem było przybliżanie informacji na temat ziem leżących na wschód od Odry i Nysy Łużyckiej, które przyłączono do Polski po II wojnie światowej.

The responsibility for conducting and supporting cultural activities rests with local government units. These governments organize cultural life, primarily through institutions they establish, but they also provide support through grants, awards and scholarships. Student culture, as a distinct type of culture, presents unique challenges, as its specific nature limits the extent to which local governments can provide financial support. This article analyzes the potential of local government units in Poland to support student culture and tests the hypothesis that these possibilities are significantly limited. The analysis confirms this hypothesis. Using the example of the City of Lublin as a case study, the article examines how student culture is supported in practice. Additionally, it explores the broader concept of culture, its importance in people’s lives, and the role of local government local governments in implementing cultural initiatives.Prowadzenie i wspieranie działalności kulturalnej jest zadaniem własnym wszystkich jednostek samorządu terytorialnego. Samorządy organizują kulturę zwłaszcza poprzez powołane przez siebie instytucje kultury. Wspieranie działalności kulturalnej przyjmować może natomiast postać m.in. dotacji, nagród i stypendiów.

The aim of this study is to provide a preliminary examination of the reception of thought of Heinrich Pesch SJ (1854–1926), and in particular his concept of Christian solidarity, among the leading Polish Catholic thinkers of the 20th century. The primary source material consisted of key monographs summarizing the authors’ views on socio-economic issues. The study took into account quantitative aspects, but mainly focused on the logical and semantic analysis of these fundamental works. As a result, it was shown that the ideas of Pesch, perceived as one of the leading Christian social thinkers and the founder of Christian solidarism, had a significant influence on the works of authors such as Fr. Antoni Roszkowski, Czesław Strzeszewski, Leopold Caro, and Fr. Jan Piwowarczyk. Through a comparative analysis of the works of Father Piwowarczyk and Karol Wojtyła on Catholic social ethics, Karol Wojtyła’s reception of Pesch’s solidarism is critically assessed, leading to some non-obvious conclusions and shedding additional light on the connections between the two texts. Jan Piwowarczyk. Poprzez analizę porównawczą prac ks. Piwowarczyka oraz Karola Wojtyły, poświęconych katolickiej etyce społecznej, poddano krytycznej ocenie recepcję solidaryzmu Pescha przez Karola Wojtyłę, dochodząc do nieoczywistych wniosków oraz rzucając dodatkowo światło na powiązania pomiędzy obydwu tekstami

A Three-Dimensional Account of Teacher–Student Communication: An Account and Its Application

    Get PDF
Objective of the Article: The article develops a potentially comprehensive and philosophically informed model of classroom communication – which is called three-dimensional – as well as to test its plausibility by conducting tentative empirical research. Research Method: We draw on the hypothetico-deductive inquiry model (following Popper’s concept), according to which the research starts as a response to a problematic situation (P1) and assumes the form of a tentative theory (TT) to be tested empirically. If it is not refuted, it can be accepted as binding and its errors (EE) can be eliminated. In case it is falsified, a new problematic situation (P2) appears. The empirical part of theory testing is based on the technique of observation and the analysis of teachers’ utterances. A Short Description of the Context of the Presented Issue: We introduce the concept of three-dimensional communication in education, which involves (1) the transmissive dimension, where the teacher provides information and students receive it; (2) the constitutive dimension, which promotes social bonds in the classroom; and (3) the interpersonal dimension, which includes individualization in communication and teaching and helps build the teacher–pupil relationship. Then, the empirical part of the article presents the model being applied in research conducted in an elementary school in the Lower Silesia region of Poland. Research Findings: It is claimed that this model can be used as a reference for analyzing actual communication processes, which is shown by the example of the empirical part. Conclusions and Recommendations: The plausibility test of the theory succeeded. However, questions are raised for further exploration: the normativity of such a model, its context-sensitiveness, its referring to schools with student-centered and teacher-centered education, the effectiveness of a teacher’s communication within the three dimensions (which may vary), and different teaching styles being referred to advanced three-dimensional communication between teachers and students

Dziedzictwo kulturowe w Internecie – szanse i zagrożenia. Kilka przypadków błędnej recepcji sztuki w Internecie

    Get PDF
The internet is a space that has opened up new possibilities for presenting cultural heritage. With the development of the network, users have gained access to digital copies of books, works of art, and 3D visualizations of historic buildings and entire cities. Contact with culture through media has never been so easy. It’s hard not to appreciate these opportunities, especially remembering the recent times of the pandemic, when contact with human cultural achievements was mainly limited to online forms. Online resources are a vast reservoir of all kinds of materials, from which users select those that match their interests and preferences. Websites and online platforms offer a rich array of multimedia, texts, photos, films, simulations, and reconstructions, materials related to every period of human cultural and artistic activity. The sources from which these have been drawn vary. A large part of the materials are digital copies of artworks, scans of manuscripts, early prints, old photographs, and films, made available on the official websites of cultural institutions: museums, libraries, or archives. An even larger group consists of resources that have been made available on the Internet as a result of spontaneous, grassroots practices of its users, sharing materials from their private collections. These include, for example, photographs taken of museum exhibits, monuments, and landmarks, films shot in historical places. The main goal of this article is to draw attention to the problem of presenting content related to cultural heritage in cyberspace. There is no doubt about the benefits of digitizing cultural heritage resources. However, less attention is often paid to the dangers associated with their online dissemination. The same technologies that allow for the presentation of cultural objects in digital media often lead to representations far removed from the original appearance of the artwork or, sometimes much worse, to its decontextualization. Too much trust in the capabilities of modern technology can ultimately lead to the degradation of culture. The text will present several examples that highlight the fundamental problems associated with this topic. Na stronach i platformach internetowych można znaleźć bogaty wachlarz multimediów, tekstów, zdjęć, filmów, symulacji i rekonstrukcji, materiałów związanych z każdym okresem kulturowej i artystycznej działalności człowieka.

Utylitarystyczna moralność i deontologiczny amoralizm ideologii transhumanistycznej

    Get PDF
The ethics of transhumanism is a utilitarian ethics. The aim of the transhumanist project of human enhancement is to increase the physical, mental and social well-being of the human being, i.e. to increase the sum of the happiness of individual and the community of which he or she is a part. The content of these considerations is to identify and describe what constitutes the ultimate basis of transhumanist ethics and, at the same time, marks the boundary beyond which transhumanist projects of human enhancement projects cannot go. We argue that this basis and at the same time the limit of moral acceptability of actions is the preservation of the personal identity of the subject. We understand this identity in the Cartesian sense, i.e. as the relation in which the subject’s self-consciousness remains to its corporeality. Transhumanist human enhancement thus becomes immoral if it can lead to the loss of the individual’s memory of past relations between his or her self-consciousness and his or her corporeality.

Developing Local Wisdom-Based Teaching Materials on “Family Addressing Terms" for Elementary School Students: Validation Analysis Using the 4D Model

    Get PDF
Objectives of the research: The utilization of media in teaching materials serves to impart knowledge of local wisdom by incorporating visuals tailored to students’ characteristics. Local wisdom as part of national identity should be recognized by the next generation through learning. Each culture in every region possesses unique characteristics that distinguish it from others. Hence, appropriate teaching materials on local wisdom should be developed for elementary school students. This study aims to design teaching materials focusing on addressing terms used in several regions in Riau. Research methods: Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach, this study follows the 4D model, which consists of defining, designing, developing, and disseminating phases. A short description of the context of the issue: This article underscores the importance of developing local wisdom-based teaching materials for elementary school students. It emphasizes the need for elementary school materials aligning with the local wisdom that are relevant to the local community and facilitate students’ understanding and appreciation of their culture. In today’s digital millennium, many elementary school students lack awareness or appreciation of local wisdom, including familial terms of address. Research findings: In addition, experts in teaching materials, media, and linguistics analyzed the data using descriptive percentage-based methods to validate the findings. Experts evaluated four key aspects: content, language, presentation, and appropriateness. Results indicated high feasibility, with content scoring 95%, language 96.87%, presentation 97.5%, and graphics 93.75%, culminating in an overall average score of 95.78% in the “very feasible” category. These findings suggest potential for broader application and study. Conclusions and recommendations: The development and testing of local wisdom teaching materials for elementary school students have demonstrated their suitability for use. Based on the validation results by experts in teaching, media, and language, the materials are highly feasible, so, further exploration and dissemination of these materials on a larger scale are recommended
