While current Christian philosophy and various non-religious philosophies of today are most often seen as being at odds with each other, arguing over both theoretical matters and practical solutions, my aim is to demonstrate how a point of convergence between Christian and non-religious philosophies arises from the rejection of anthropological naturalism. Christian doctrine by necessity involves certain forms of transcendence that cannot be reconciled with a fully naturalistic position and the rejection of naturalism remains one of the main claims of the current Christian philosophy, as described by Piotr Mazur, Vittorio Possenti, Chantal Delsol, and other Christian scholars who deal both with philosophical anthropology and matters of modern culture. Somewhat similarly, naturalism is also at least partially rejected by non-religious philosophies concerned with anthropology, including queer philosophy (Sarah Ahmed), postcolonial thought (Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak), and ecophilosophy (Joanna Hańderek). While reasons for opposing naturalism vary greatly between those two groups and so do methods of critiquing it, they seem to share discontent with naturalism, especially with regard to anthropology. This paper examines how expressions of anti-naturalistic thought both diverge and converge between Christian and non-religious thinkers.

“Fake News” in Reformulated Messages: Towards Expanding the Toolset for Identifying Misinformation

In an age where information spreads faster than ever, the subtle manipulation of truth through rephrasing plays a pivotal role in amplifying mis‑ information. Starting from the observation that the spread of “fake news” may be significantly reinforced through reformulating a message for the sake of its mis‑ representation, we seek to address the problem of the spread of “fake news” from the perspective of the rephrasing of news for purposes of misinformation. Given such a potentially dangerous role for misuses of rephrasing, the following research question arises: what is the relation between “fake news” and reformulated mes‑ sages? This question will be addressed by analysing to what extent (i) definitions of “fake news” in the computer‑science and philosophy‑related literature, and (ii) recent linguistic studies of rephrase (as it is sometimes known), are helpful in identifying the main features of “fake news” as these relate to the latter. In this regard, we propose a research programme for addressing rephrase as a linguis‑ tic phenomenon—one that will serve as a tool for the study of communication in respect of “fake news.”In an age where information spreads faster than ever, the subtle manipulation of truth through rephrasing plays a pivotal role in amplifying mis‑ information. Z krótkich dziejów klasztoru franciszkanów obserwantów w Głubczycach

In the Middle Ages Glubczyce was one of several districts of the Opava princes, descended from a lateral line of the Přemyslids. The last of this dynasty to reign in Glubczyce was Prince John the Pious (d. ca. 1485). In 1448, shortly after taking power, he founded and endowed a monastery of Observant Franciscans in his capital. The Franciscan church also became his necropolis. Glubczyce was one of the earliest Observant houses in Silesia. The first convent consisted of monks who came from Koźle, destroyed by the Hussite invasion. The monastery survived only until 1543, when the Lutheran owner of Glubczyce, Margrave George Hohenzollern-Ansbach, ordered the monks to be expelled from the town. An integral part of the article is an edition of the original foundation document of the Franciscan Observant monastery in Glubczyce, the content of which was known in historiography only from modern summaries.W średniowieczu Głubczyce były jedną z kilku dzielnic książąt z opawskich, wywodzących się z bocznej linii Przemyślidów. W 1448 r., wkrótce po objęciu władzy, ufundował i uposażył on w swojej stolicy klasztor franciszkanów obserwantów.

This article deals with the subject of reward and punishment among a group of townspeople representing the maltsters, brewers and innkeepers of Kraków, in the light of the guild statutes of 1568. Beer brewing in towns was free and common. This was due to the different nature of the professions associated with beer production compared to other crafts. The guilds of maltsters, brewers and innkeepers were open in nature, as any urban citizen associated with these professions could belong to them. The other guilds were of a closed nature, protecting the interests of the craftsmen gathered in them. The above-mentioned statute of 1568 (Statuta tabernatorum Cracoviensium) consists of a Latin invocation and 35 articles written in Polish. Elements of punishment and reward are written into the content of many of the articles, although we observe a clear imbalance between these elements. While there are only three instances of some form of reward, there are as many as 18 instances of punishment for various offences. The balancing element is privileges, of which there are five. We can distinguish between penalties of a general nature, imposed on guild mates (sometimes distinguishing between older and younger ones) and masters. They were imposed in the form of a wax tribute, a weekly wage or in money. Penalties had different weights and thus different severity. When imposing them, the material status of the group was taken into account. Pupils, unpaid and under the care of masters, were punished immaterially. The function of punishment, while having a motivational character, was to restore and maintain the lost balance. Many punishments were of an earthly nature, while the reward could usually only be hoped for after death – in heaven. Thus, an earthly punishment led to an eternal reward.Artykuł podejmuje tematykę nagrody i kary w wśród grupy mieszczan, reprezentujących słodowników, piwowarów i karczmarzy krakowskich, w świetle statutu cechowego z 1568 r. Warzenie piwa w miastach miało charakter wolny i powszechny. Cechy słodowników, piwowarów i karczmarzy miały charakter otwarty, bowiem mógł do nich należeć każdy obywatel miejski, związany z tymi zawodami. Pozostałe cechy posiadały charakter zamknięty, chroniąc interesy skupionych w nich rzemieślników. Wspomniany statut z 1568 r. W treść wielu artykułów wpisano elementy kary i nagrodykarę i nagrodę, aczkolwiek obserwujemy wyraźną nierównowagę pomiędzy tymi elementami. O ile o jakiejś formie nagrody możemy mówić jedynie w trzech przypadkach, to o tyle kary za różnorakie przewinienia zapisano aż osiemnastokrotnie.

This article presents an account of a study aimed at learning about third graders’ experience with ways to evaluate their performance using formative assessment. Despite the growing popularity of formative assessment, the traditional approach to grading still prevails in Poland. And yet we know that grading does not have to include giving grades, points, pluses, stars, suns, etc. to children. The research was prepared in a qualitative strategy. Focus group interviews were conducted with male and female students of third grades of elementary schools. The results of the research show that children can participate in and create a community of evaluation when it takes place in the atmosphere of security and trust, activating intrinsic motivation in them. Children took care of their needs to be together with others in shared interactions. For the children surveyed, formative assessment became a stimulus to work on their own development. They also amplified the students’ voice and improved communication between them and teachers about learning, while allowing them to feel that they themselves were responsible for their own learning process. Today’s changes taking place in assessment are primarily based on fostering student development and on establishing an open dialogue between teachers and students. If these conditions are met, we can begin to talk about creating an environment conducive to openness to the evaluations of others and developing a culture of constructive teaching and evaluation in the classroom.W artykule przedstawiono relację z badań, których celem było poznanie doświadczeń trzecioklasistów związanych ze sposobami ich oceny w formie kształtującej. Mimo rosnącej popularności oceniania kształtującego, w Polsce nadal dominuje tradycyjne podejście do oceniania. Przeprowadzono zogniskowane wywiady grupowe z uczniami i uczennicami klas trzecich szkół podstawowych. Wyniki badań pokazują, że dzieci potrafią partycypować we wspólnocie oceniania i ją tworzyć, wtedy, kiedy odbywa się w poczuciu bezpieczeństwa i zaufania, uaktywniając w nich wewnętrzną motywację. Dzieci dbały o swoje potrzeby do bycia razem z innymi we wspólnych interakcjach.

Polish Generacja Nic, “Denarration” and the Liminal Experience of the 1990s Transformation in Agata Endo Nowicka’s Webcomics

    Get PDF
Access to the internet revitalized Polish comic art, enabled artists to transition from publishing zines and comic magazines in print during the 1990s and the turn of the century to dynamic online blogging platforms. This shift allowed new generations of Polish comic artists to regain prominence following the collapse of the comic market in the 1990s. Although these artists were familiar with comics from the People’s Republic of Poland, they explored different themes, often addressing national and transnational phenomena, such as “denarration”’ inspired by cultural texts about Generation X, or offering ironic commentaries on the attitudes attributed to the Polish alternative labeled Generacja Nic (Generation Nothing) in the media. Online comics democratized the medium, providing opportunities for those without access to traditional publishing to share their stories and amplify the voices of marginalized women and various minorities within local comics culture. Moreover, webcomics became a springboard for self-publishing careers, helping some authors achieve national and international recognition. Today, Polish webcomics serve as valuable documents, capturing economic transformation of Poland from a communist system to capitalism, as well as preserving a forgotten archive of captivating works by young creators that helped them navigate everyday challenges. The research methodology in this article combines cultural studies approaches with comics studies and the so-called oral history of comics. The primary material analyzed consists of the webcomics of Agata Endo Nowicka – the creator of Komix, the most commented blogging platform in the media, which inspired numerous other domestic artists.

The comic books about the adventures of Tytus, Romek and A’Tomek were a tremendous success for Wydawnictwo Harcerskie and their author, Henryk J. Chmielewski. The scouting theme, imposed by decision makers, was creatively utilized by the author to promote adventure, travel and friendship. Additionally, Chmielewski used the series to highlight important social issues and to present scouting as a way of life.Komiks o przygodach Tytusa, Romka i A’Tomka był ogromnym sukcesem Wydawnictwa Harcerskiego i Henryka J. Chmielewskiego. One of the most important ‘magnets’ for young people in comics about Tytus, Romek and A’Tomek was humour. The subject of this article is to present the important role that linguistic operations played in the creation of the depicted world of Papcio Chmiel’s comics. The transformation of commonplace phrases, vocabulary, exploration of the sonorous qualities of language lead to the questioning of established linguistic forms, undermining the seriousness of the depicted world. Such mechanisms firstly significantly autonomised the verbal layer vis-à-vis other comic book sign systems, and secondly provided a school of independent and critical thinking for young readers, which stood in contrast to the propaganda expectations of the authorities. Przekształcanie skonwencjonalizowanych zwrotów, słowotwórstwo, eksplorowanie brzmieniowych walorów języka prowadzi do kwestionowania stereotypowych form językowych, podważając powagę świata przedstawionego.

    Get PDF
The article aims to analyze the phenomenon of technological escapism presented in the cult comic series Tytus, Romek i A‘Tomek by Henryk J. Chmielewski. Technological escapism served as the author’s response to the limitations of the oppressive system of the Polish People’s Republic and as a means for free intellectual and artistic expression, enabling both the characters and readers to symbolically and imaginatively cross boundaries. Referring to Isaiah Berlin’s concept (Berlin, 1991), the authors distinguished two types of this phenomenon: “technological escapism to” – which represents freedom and the liberty to travel, develop, and engage in social and cultural change – and “technological escapism from” – which signifies freedom from being confined to a single reality and the compulsion to conform to the political, economic and social system of the time. The article analyzes three main aspects of technological escapism in the comic series: (1) the axiological dimension, which allowed Henryk J. Chmielewski to promote values that contested the ideas of the socialist system, (2) the theme of travel in time and space, serving as a metaphorical escape from the uncomfortable reality of the People’s Republic of Poland, achieved by adapting and transforming mundane everyday objects into technologically advanced machines and devices capable of transporting the characters through time and space, (3) the original linguistic layer of the works, showcasing the author’s boundless literary imagination and technological foresight. By bringing innovative technological solutions to life, Chmielewski anticipated the possibility of their realization in the real, non-literary world.Celem artykułu była analiza zjawiska technologicznego eskapizmu ukazanego w cyklu kultowych komiksów Henryka J. Chmielewskiego pt. „Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek”. „Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek”. Są to: 1) wymiar aksjologiczny, umożliwiający Henrykowi J. Chmielewskiemu propagowanie wartości kontestujących idee systemu socjalistycznego; 2) wątek podróży w czasie i przestrzeni, stanowiący metaforyczną ucieczkę z niewygodnej rzeczywistości Polski Ludowej, poprzez przystosowywanie i przerabianie banalnych przedmiotów codziennego użytku na maszyny i urządzenia zaawansowane technologicznie, zdolne do przenoszenia bohaterów w czasie i przestrzeni; 3) a także oryginalna warstwa językowa utworów, ukazująca nieograniczoną wyobraźnię literacką i intuicję technologiczną autora, który powołując do życia nowatorskie rozwiązania technologiczne, przewidział możliwość ich realizacji w prawdziwym, pozaliterackim świecie

In this section of the new issue of Perspectives on Culture, we aim to introduce readers to several important aspects of popular culture through the lens of comic art. We recognize that comic art is a product of popular culture and, as such, reflects significant trends within a given society’s culture while also providing creators with a space to present their own original vision of reality. This is simultaneously a realm of imagination for authors, for whom reality may serve as a subject treated in a realistic and historical manner or as an unconventional challenge that shifts artistic vision into the world of imagination, incorporating surreal or even fully surrealistic elements
