Wojskowe pamiątki i sztuka okopowa we wspomnieniach polskich żołnierzy czasów I wojny światowej
The aim of this paper is to explore various aspects of World War I trench art. The primary source material consists of published memoirs of soldiers who served both in the Polish Legions and in the armies of the partitioning powers. These accounts reveal a particular approach to war souvenirs. Both soldiers and civilians sought to obtain such items, for example, by searching battlefields. Soldiers, whether serving in frontline units or in the rear, expressed—using the language of memoirs—a deep desire to acquire rings made from aluminum artillery fuse caps, commonly referred to as “clocks.” Notably, the exceptional creativity of soldiers in crafting these unique handmade objects is evident, as they utilized virtually any available material. The front itself provided the raw materials, a fact frequently emphasized in memoirs. Other popular items included postcards made from tree bark, as well as unique riding crops fashioned from snake skin. Additionally, this study highlights artifacts created by civilians from materials formerly used by the military and briefly discusses trench art in the context of prisoner-of-war camps and internment camps for legionnaires.
The article analyzes Gustave Flaubert’s sadness, a topic which he frequently addressed in his letters to George Sand. What does it manifest? Does it facilitate or hinder artistic creativity? The essay attempts to shed light on the phenomenon of “the sadness of thought” in the author of Madame Bovary’s “black melancholy” visible in his correspondence with George Sand. Flaubert reports it to his “dear Master” verbally, but also “between the lines.” The methodological background is George Steiner’s reflection in the work Ten (Possible) Reasons for the Sadness of Thought. The paper’s title formula directs us to the sources of melancholy, which are identified with the term “sadness of thought.” Regarding Flaubert, is any of the “reasons” identified by the American literary critic and philosopher dominant? Or, in the case of Flaubert’s melancholy, are there several “reasons” at the same time? What does this mean for our understanding of his work and artistic activities undertaken with admirable dedication? This essay considers such issues.Artykuł poświęcony analizie smutku Gustave’a Flauberta, o którym często wspominał w listach pisanych do George Sand. Czego jest on przejawem?
The aim of this article is to present Johann Branner, chamberlain to Archduchess Maria of Bavaria. However, the text does not focus on his activities at the court in Graz, where he performed the duties of supervisor and guardian of the private chambers and property of the widow of Charles of Styria. Instead, it examines Branner’s diplomatic activities as an informal mediator in the relations between Archduchess Maria and her son-in-law, Sigismund III Vasa. It discusses his mission to Poland in March 1598, intended to maintain correspondence between the Styrian and Polish courts and to preserve close family relations between Maria of Bavaria and Sigismund III after the death of Queen Anna Habsburg. The article reconstructs the actions of the Archduchess’s chamberlain, mainly based on Maria of Bavaria’s correspondence with her son Ferdinand, with the Polish monarch, and with the courtiers of the deceased queen (Ursula Meyerin, Georg Schiechel). It also refers to Branner’s literary output – his notes from his mission to Poland, his travel notes from Spain, and his letters to Archduke Ferdinand of Styria. The preserved source material paints a picture of a versatile and loyal courtier who was able to encrypt his mistress’s correspondence, report on important events at her request, and even carry out diplomatic missions. Johann Branner built his career through constant access to the Archduchess and by proving himself useful. His service was not interrupted by the death of Maria of Bavaria; until the end of his life, he devoted his service to her son, Archduke Ferdinand. Johann Branner zbudował swoją karierę dzięki stałemu dostępowi do arcyksiężnej i byciu użytecznym. Jego służby nie przerwała śmierć Marii Bawarskiej. Do końca życia oddawał swoje usługi jej synowi arcyksięciu Ferdynandowi
The article presents the advice of the Polish diplomatic representative in St. Petersburg, A. Debole, addressed to the Polish elites of the time. His recommendations were intended to strengthen the supporters of reform and provide them with tools to defend these reforms against a potential Russian attack. The study is based on Debole’s extensive manuscript correspondence, analyzed in relation to the issues under discussion. The actions he suggested to the reformers – which he himself supported – proved accurate; importantly, he also anticipated Russia’s policy towards the reformed Commonwealth, clearly identifying its main goals. He warned not only against Russian aggression but also against relying too heavily on potential allies of the Polish–Lithuanian state. Debole rationally highlighted the threats to the state’s existence, while at the same time pointing to realistic ways of preventing them, showing that the Commonwealth still had a chance. His judgments and opinions, often expressed in a highly suggestive way, certainly influenced the political elite, though it remains an open question whom he persuaded to defend the May 3 Constitution and whom he convinced to pursue reforms that would prepare the state for the anticipated Russian attack. The article demonstrates that contemporaries were well aware of the dangers, and that Debole’s counsel offered clear guidance on how to avert the threat looming over his homeland.Artykuł przedstawia rady polskiego przedstawiciela dyplomatycznego w Petersburgu Augustyna Debolego w latach obradowania Sejmu Wielkiego, kierowane do ówczesnych polskich elit. Miały one wzmocnić stronników reform i wskazać im narzędzia do obrony przed potencjalnym atakiem Rosji.
Onora O’Neill, Okiem filozofa. Komunikacja cyfrowa, przeł. Joanna Frydrych (Warszawa: Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN, 2024), ss. 136 (rec.)
Problematyka komunikacji należy do istotnych wymiarów ludzkiej egzystencji.

Multiculturalism, prejudice, and teachers’ expectations for the acculturation strategies of the refugee students
Research objectives (aims) and problem(s): Ongoing migration flows in Greece continue to increase the cultural diversity of the student population and heighten the need to include refugee students in the educational system. The aim of this study is to assess teachers’ attitudes toward intercultural relations in the school context, focusing on their views on multiculturalism, their prejudices toward refugees, and their expectations regarding the acculturation of refugee students.
Research methods: This study employs a quantitative methodology and a synchronic research design. A total of 155 teachers participated by completing a questionnaire composed of the Multicultural Ideology Scale (Berry, 2017), a Prejudice Scale, and the Acculturation Expectations Scale (Berry, 2017). Data analysis was carried out on three levels: first, descriptive statistics were applied to outline response distribution and key sample characteristics; second, correlations between variables were examined; and finally, regression analysis was conducted to assess the impact of independent variables on dependent ones, allowing for interpretation of potential causal relationships.
Process of argumentation: Teachers, as members of the majority group, exert considerable influence in shaping the school environment. Based on this premise, the study investigates teachers’ attitudes toward multiculturalism, their prejudices toward refugees, and their expectations regarding the acculturation strategies that refugee students should adopt. Promoting multiculturalism within schools can contribute to intercultural interaction and support the development of equal relationships. Furthermore, greater understanding of acculturation strategies can improve the management of educational challenges related to refugee populations, thus encouraging an inclusive educational environment.
Research findings and their impact on the development of educational sciences: The study found that teachers in Greece generally acknowledge and accept cultural diversity and exhibit low levels of prejudice toward refugees. They tend to favor integration and assimilation strategies over separation. Multiculturalism was shown to support integration and assimilation, while prejudice was associated with a preference for separation. Regression analysis confirmed that multicultural attitudes reduce prejudice and promote integration, whereas prejudice increases support for separation. Embracing multiculturalism in the school context facilitates intercultural contact and strengthens relationships between students and teachers. Understanding acculturation expectations is critical, as it directly influences the educational and psychological adjustment of refugee students. Teachers who support integration can help prevent conflict in multicultural classrooms.
Conclusions and/or recommendations: Acculturation is a dynamic process shaped by two interacting conditions. This study examines teachers’ expectations regarding the acculturation strategies of refugee students. However, it remains unclear to what extent refugees are able to voluntarily choose or consent to a particular strategy, as their freedom to do so is often limited. Refugee students may shift between strategies in response to their evolving needs and external demands. Importantly, integration or assimilation should not be viewed as the only culturally legitimate options
Ahmed Moustafa, an internationally acclaimed Egyptian artist based in London, centers his artistic expression on Arabic calligraphy in its various forms. This article explores Moustafa’s perspective on his artistic mission and the profound significance he attributes to calligraphy. The analysis begins with the artist’s reflections on his work, emphasizing its spiritual depth and cultural heritage. Moustafa perceives the unity and harmony of the universe as expressed through geometry, which he regards as the divine language. This belief underpins his exploration of the proportional writing system (khaṭṭ mansūb), originally developed by the 10th-century calligrapher Ibn Muqla. Through years of meticulous study, Moustafa reconstructed this system, revealing its foundational geometric principles. For Moustafa, calligraphy transcends mere artistic expression; it becomes a spiritual practice that draws the practitioner closer to God. His artwork draws inspiration primarily from the Quran, where the Beauty and Goodness emanate not only from geometrically governed script but also from the divine Word itself, with writing serving as its tangible representation.
The Arches and the Spandrels: A Response to Kenneth W. Kemp
In his book „The Edge of Evolution”, Michael Behe draws on a metaphor of arches and spandrels. The arches are what holds a cathedral together and spandrels are the “fillings” that may carry beautiful ornaments, however, they have no say in whether a building stands or collapses (Behe 2007, 171-203). Behe explains that it is similar with life – some minor and non-substantial elements of living organisms can be explained by neo-Darwinism, but the complex biochemical systems, which are essential for survivability of any living organism – cannot. Thus neo-Darwinism may explain the spandrels, but not the arches of life. I think Behe’s metaphor can be taken more broadly and applied to the context of our debate. Here I will understand it as a mental attitude by which one focuses on the irrelevant spandrels at the same time pretending to be unable to grasp the arch (“core” or “essence”) of a problem. In his response Mr. Kemp reduces my critique to four points (P1-P4) which he claims we disagree on and shows why – on his view – I am mistaken. Here I will order my response according to his four points
Reading Nicolai Hartmann. Ideas and Dialogues: Introduction to the Issue
This special issue is devoted to the philosophical legacy of Nicolai Hartmann (1882–1950), one of the most compelling and systematic thinkers of twentieth‑century philosophy. In recent decades, Hartmann’s work has attracted renewed scholarly interest, particularly in light of contemporary debates in ontology, philosophical anthropology, epistemology and the theory of values. Researchers have begun to rediscover the depth and relevance of his layered ontology, his concept of the real, and his critical engagement with both Neo‑Kantianism and German idealism. They are also starting to explore the Russian context of Hartmann’s thought. This special issue is devoted to the philosophical legacy of Nicolai Hartmann (1882–1950), one of the most compelling and systematic thinkers of twentieth‑century philosophy.
