Get PDFThe author discusses the problems involved in ethnographic film-making, specifically in the making of a film discourse of one's own. She deems it necessary to construct an ideational «scenario» in which to capture the múltiple details of the reality that is to be filmed. The visual representation of Antonin Artaud's Voyage of 1936 to Tarahumara territory, in México, is a case in point: a unique project which combines literature and film-making, film-making and ethnology.El ensayo presenta la problemática que significa la realización de un film etnográfico y, específicamente, la construcción de un discurso fílmico propio, por lo que se propone que es necesaria la construcción de un «escenario» ideacional que permita captar los múltiples detalles de la realidad que se quiere filmar. Get PDFBy relying on fieldwork as well as on library research, the author discusses a photographic event in the modern history of Spain that is little known by Spanish scholars: the expedition in June, 1950 of the great American photographer W. Eugene Smith and his two assistants to the village of Deleitosa, in the province of Cáceres. The author describes the methodology of Smith and his team, then analyzes the results of his work, the famous photographic documentary «A Spanish Village», published in LIFE magazine in 1951. He also assesses the social impact of this work in and out of Spain and compares the ethnographic photograph with that used in journalism.Este artículo, basado tanto en trabajo de campo como en investigación documental, trata de un episodio fotográfico en la historia española todavía poco reconocido por investigadores españoles: la expedición en junio del 1950 del gran fotógrafo estadounidense W. Get PDFIn the German-speaking world, attempts were made to document Man's bodily and cultural manifestations by means of photographs. Photography thus became a medium for making visual inventories, its impact being larger in physical anthropology than in ethnography. Of the steps taken to establish a morphological typology, that of Johann Goethe, a questionable conceptual systematization, prevailed over other empirically-based models. Late in the 19th century, the idea of a Photographic Museum of the Human Races lay behind the ever more frequent scientific application of photography to illustrations in compilations of a general character and to representations of whole ethnic groups. Technical innovations promoted initiatives aimed to overcome the static photography of the day.En el ámbito germano-parlante se intentó documentar las manifestaciones corporales y culturales del hombre a través de fotografías, como medio de inventario visual, incidiendo más en la antropología física que en la etnografía. Get PDFThe great figure of Vicente Risco ought to be revised in the process of assessing his extensive ethnographic work, done under the shelter of the incipient Galician nationalism of the early 20th century. Risco's intellectual prominence before the years of the Second Republic enabled him to defend, from traditionalist and culturalist positions, a nationalism founded upon the notion that culture is a distinctive fact. He was joined in this endeavor by other members of his generation. The author, who finds fault with the received interpretation of Risco as a "political man" and of his work as something unrelated to his life, attempts to recuperate this provincial as well as cosmopolitan scholar by showing the coherence that his complex personality, life and work reveal. The author's aim is to find for Risco the place in the history of anthropology that he deserves, beyond any ideological branding.La figura señera de Vicente Risco es objeto de revisión necesaria, como modo de aproximación a la ingente labor etnográfica desplegada a la sombra del incipiente nacionalismo gallego en los albores del siglo. El indiscutible liderazgo intelectual de Risco, hasta la proclamación de la II República, le permitió propiciar junto a sus compañeros de generación, desde posiciones tradicionalistas y culturalistas, un nacionalismo que se apoyaba en la cultura como hecho diferencial. Ahora bien, frente al juicio corriente que reconstruye su figura principalmente como "hombre político" y divorcia su vida de su obra, se ofrece la oportunidad de recuperar críticamente a este intelectual provinciano de espíritu cosmopolita, desde la coherencia que ofrece su intrincada personalidad, su vida y su obra. Get PDFThis paper aims to show that the set of garments used in a particular historical period does not make up a system identical to the one occurring in natural languages. This will be done after considering the basic concepts linguistic sign, linguistic unit, linguistic articulation and linguistic systems. Despite the fact that both language and fashion are related to a process of change, garments are unable to become articulated within a set in relation to resources of the same nature. Besides, garments cannot make up organizational levéis equivalent to the levels of minimal units —phonemes—, formal units —forms articulated paradigmatically— and functional units —phrases. Only in an analogical manner and in a broad semiological sense can one speak of the «language» of fashion.Se trata de demostrar, tras la exposición de los conceptos básicos de signo, unidad, articulación y sistema lingüísticos, que el conjunto de prendas —unidades— utilizadas en un determinado período histórico no constituyen un sistema, y, mucho menos, idéntico al de las lenguas naturales —a pesar de que lengua y moda estén sujetas al proceso de cambio— dada la incapacidad de cada una de esas unidades de articularse dentro del conjunto en función de recursos de la misma naturaleza, para constituir niveles de organización equivalentes a los de unidades mínimas —fonemas—, unidades formales —formas articuladas en paradigmas— y unidades funcionales —sintagmas. Get PDFThis study analyzes Spanish vocabulary of indigenous origin. It employs a source that until now has gone unnoticed among Americanists: a l6th-century Mexican manuscript containing paintings and text in Spanish, the Códice Tudela, currently housed in the Museo de América in Madrid. The indigenous borrowings found here provide early evidence of the influence of Native American languages —specially Náhuatl— on Spanish. The analysis focuses on two complementary themes: the semantic fields of the borrowings, and their persistence in present day Spanish.Este estudio analiza el léxico español de procedencia indígena en un tipo de texto que hasta ahora no ha sido utilizado como fuente por los americanistas. Se trata de un manuscrito mexicano de mediados del siglo XVI que contiene pinturas y texto español y que se halla en el Museo de América de Madrid: el Códice Tudela. Los préstamos indígenas que presenta constituyen pruebas tempranas de la influencia de las lenguas americanas en español, en particular de la lengua náhualt. El análisis se ha enfocado en dos direcciones complementarias: de los campos semánticos de los préstamos y de su persistencia en las hablas actuales

Get PDFThe present work aims to provide a classification of the local terminology given to the fruit and trees grown in Alfaro, La Rioja. The project was carried on in two phases. In the first, we gathered a current vocabulary in the field. The second phase consisted of organizing this vocabulary into two sections, which make up the basis of the article. The first chapter is basically descriptive and contains information that we collected and then arranged in alphabetical order. The second part, which deals with the lexicographical aspects, contains a vocabulary for all the terms listed in the previous chapter. These terms have also been provided with references taken from other dictionaries on lexicography or from works dealing with dialects. These data give us some idea of the terms which are used in this district and its surroundings.Se recogen en el presente trabajo las denominaciones populares que reciben las frutas y árboles frutales cultivados en Alfaro (La Rioja). El estudio se compone de dos partes. La primera parte es el capítulo descriptivo, mostramos en su contexto el material recogido —ordenamos alfabéticamente los frutos—. La segunda parte, de naturaleza lexicográfica, contiene el vocabulario de todas las voces registradas en el capítulo anterior y completadas con referencias de otros términos procedentes de diccionarios, léxicos o trabajos dialectológicos de las zonas colindantes. This oral text, recited by a Mapuche native, is a version of Type 302 in the Aame-Thompson's International Index and manifests very well the structural features of the «Wondrous» in the Hispanic-European Folk Tradition. The original versión, accompanied by linguistic notes, is appended to the study.Se presenta el análisis de un cuento folklórico registrado recientemente en la Araucanía (sur de Chile). El texto oral, mantenido por un nativo de la etnia mapuche, es una versión del Tipo 302 del índice internacional de Aarne-Thompson y conserva bastante bien los rasgos estructurales del cuento maravilloso de raigambre hispano-europea.
