The recent exhumation of mass graves from the Spanish Civil War and the Post-War years, mostly involving the largely abandoned graves of the Francoist rearguard, have become a central element in contemporary debates about the conflict and the regime following it. In this paper, the complexity and dynamism of this process is analysed, including from political and legal initiatives of great social and media impact to local actions on the ground, at times failed, ephemeral or almost imperceptible, but no less crucial. From the point of view of many of the people involved in the pro-exhumation associations, opening up the graves is part of a basic exercise in justice and ‘dignification’, showing the scope and systematic nature of repression while reverting the ‘infrahuman’ disposition of the executed corpses, a feeling crystallised in the common expression ‘thrown’ or ‘buried like dogs’, used very often to justify the need of carrying out exhumations.

Tarantism (a mythically-based, ritualized reaction to the bite of the dreaded tarantula in the belief that the victim could only be cured by music and dance) had existed in Italy since time immemorial; yet it manifested itself also in Spain, where it has been far less studied, at least from the perspective of cultural history. Tarantism was certainly known in Aragon until well into the 20th century, as reported by informants in Fraga (Huesca) who recall “The Tarantula Festival,” by which all forms of individual suffering were communally exorcised through the power of sympathy and neighbourly solidarity.

This paper shows why Cultural Ecology, understood as a method to explore the relationships between the environment and cultural processes, has deeply influenced a whole generation of Mexican anthropologists as a result of the teachings of Ángel Palerm and Eric Wolf. The practical application of Steward’s theories to the processes of Mexican regional formation, linked to the use of hydraulic technologies as part of both adaptative cultural strategies and the political control of water in the process of food production, shows that Cultural Ecology, understood as cultural management of natural environments, as it happens with Economy, is designed and politically manipulated in the context of deeply unequal societies with unadaptative consequences.

Within the framework of a research project on the ethnobotany of the western section of the province of Granada, in southern Spain, a detailed study was made of place names derived from names related to plants (phytotoponyms and synphytotoponyms). The information —gathered from the Territorial Land Registry of Granada, the Regional Government of Andalusia and field work— has been included in a database written with the Microsoft Excel program. References to a total of 98 plant species were found in as many as 593 place names of the area. The authors comment on the environmental, paleophytogeographic and ethnobotanical significance of the species represented in the place names.

Wild children are a category of persons that has in common to have passed the first years of their lives in isolation state, understanding by isolation a situation in which the individual remains without human company, although can coexist with another type of social animals like wolves or monkeys. This article explores the main interpretative models on their existence, that have been followed one another throughout the time, to transform these creatures in privileged objects of the experimentation on the limits of the human nature and on the dangers of culture.

In this paper I analise the dialogue between western and non-western indigenous cannibalism. I make reference to the cannibal evidences from a western point of view, and to the ideological fight not only to expel it from our culture but also to invest in it the role of fundametal marker or fetish condensing of all evils of Otherness. Yet, starting in the XXth Century, we find a number of episodes approaching cannibalism (real and symbolic) to western popular culture, thus refashioning the former relationship between cannibalism and evil to the point of losing its diacritic place as fundamental marker of cultural differences. This paves the way to artistic eccentricities, but also to organ trafficking. I end with a reference to the ways in which the anthropology of ths last century contributed both the the making and unmaking of the myth of cannibalism.

In this paper I analyze the cult of San Antonio Abad, San Antón, as an example of the ritual fusion of nature and culture in the different communities commemorating this Saint. The festive practices of this «old Saint» are associated to preChristian rites related to fire and the protection of animals. The cult to this Saint was very pread out in Europe, and was even exported to the American colonies. It is a clear example of how popular practices appropriate Church initiatives within their own logic, bordering heterodoxy at times, while expressing mechanisms of resistance to change. Yet it is clear that this cult has survived because it has adapted. When industrialization came to the countryside, the animal blessing gave way to machine blessing. When stockbreeding is on the wane, the cult adjusts to new ecological sensibilities and the blessings go to pets. St. Antonio unifies nature and culture, rural and urban, remote cults with ecology.

In the past few years, the old debate about nature and culture, a debate which is —ultimately— one on the definition of the ‘human’, has acquired the form of a controversy (both philosophical and everyday) between “animalists” and “hyper-humanists”; between those who would claim a certain “animalisation of humankind” —humanising animals on issues such as rights— and those who, on the contrary, make attempts at widening the division between humans and animals to justify practices of mistreatment and sacrifice of the latter in the name of tradition and culture. This paper mantains that reductionist abuses of “vulgar sociobiology”, now at times presented as innovative, were adequately questioned by anthropologists in the past; and proposes, both against these views and as opposed to what has been called “mysticist hyperhumanism” by some authors, a reivindication of culture as a conquest of our species leading us to humanity, retrieving in this way the program of that anthropology which, coming from the acknowledgement of cultural diversity, promoted a positive “humanization” of the world.

Enunciados, cimientos y dispositivos

This article takes the view that natural parks are as much an opportunity to pause for reflection on the ideological foundations of the way we live our culture, as they are an invitation to cast doubt on neoliberal conservationist policies dressed up as ecologicallyminded ones. Protected areas make for difficult analysis. They entail processes that are associated to territorialization and de-territirialization, to homogenization and crossbreeding, to tertiarization, regulation and re-urbanization, and so on, within what has come to be known as globalization. This way of exercising power leads to the regulation of nature through a variety of ways of mercantilization. This article looks at the complex expression of natural parks. To do so, we have approached the multiple dimensions of the “natural”, focusing particularly on the political dimension. We have paid special attention to the mechanisms of configuration and legitimization of natural spaces, such as in the first framework of analysis, and we approach the ethnography produced in our country with the aim of looking at the processes with which they are identified nowadays. Finally, we consider the challenges facing natural areas and the role of anthropology as a discipline in this field.

The authors explore the perception of plants by the Toba of Rio Bermejito (Central Chaco, Argentina) by analyzing the vernacular names of Toba phytonymy. After adopting an interdisciplinary approach to the subject that combines contributions from the fields of linguistics and ethnobotany, the authors present a corpus of names and a discussion of the morpho-syntactic processes and semantic relations that are involved in the Toba naming of the species of plants. They found that the nomenclature makes reference to distinctive features and physiological or environmental aspects of the species, together with reference to their function in Toba culture. In addition, the list of plant names reveals characteristic properties of the world of hunters and gatherers; for instance, the high frequency in the list of names related to morphological aspects that call to mind the animal world as well. The analysis provides evidence of the depth and keenness of the Toba in observing and understanding their natural environment.
