    Perception of Water Quality in Rural/Agricultural Areas of Machakel District, North West Ethiopia

    Potable water with high quality is a basic requirement for human wellbeing. However, the perceptions on the quality of potable water sources and associated factors influencing the later have not been well studied. Hence, this study aims at examining the perception of water quality in rural/agricultural areas of Machakel district, North West Ethiopia. The study used cross sectional survey design. structured interviews with 293 sample respondents, who were selected using probability sampling technique, were conducted to capture their views on water quality at the source. Descriptive statistics and ordinal logistic regression were used to identify factors affecting the perception of households on water quality in rural/agricultural areas. Most of the household heads used protected hand-dug well, protected spring and protected shallow well. Variables such as education, income, past experiences of health risks, chemicals (chlorine) and poor trust in supplier have a significant effect on perception of rural agricultural communities on water quality at the source. The study suggests education and chlorination of water sources to be promoted among the rural/agricultural communities to enhance better quality perception on potable water sources. On the other hand water quality control systems should be created to avoid health jeopardy from water born sickness. For high income groups it may be better to provide access to pipe water. User participation should be considered in the process of water source construction

    Root Morphological Characters at Several Distances from Irrigated Trench in Rice Varieties Grown under Rain-fed Conditioned Plots

    In rain-fed area, water deficit or drought stress is a serious limiting factor to rice production and yield stability, and root system with deep roots is one of the most important characters. This study aimed to identify which root morphological characters induce the advantage of the deep rooting between varieties. Six varieties consisting of two groups of ecosystems, upland: NERICA1, NERICA4, NERICA7, Yumenohatamochi, and lowland: Hinohikari and Koshihikari were grown under the rain- fed condition in the field of Kochi University. The results suggested the adaptability of NERICA varieties to the upland rainfed conditions, due to the development of roots into the deep soil layer. NERICA7 had lowest soil moisture content and had a higher root weight, root surface area, root length and the number of root branching in the deep soil layer at heading stage. NERICA7 also had higher value on dry weight, surface area and thickness in total amount of root morphological characters. Varietal difference of root surface area in the deep soil layer was related to both root length and thickness, and root length was involved with root branches. On the other hand, the varietal difference of total amount of root surface area was related not to the root length, but to the root thickness. This result suggested that the emergence of the thick roots (probably primary crown roots) allowed the roots to penetrate into the deep soil layer. Therefore, it is considered that the emergence of thick roots is an important trait for the deep rooting character

    Quality and Storability of Mango During Zero Energy Cool Chamber (ZECC)

    Many researchhavefound thatthe use of zero energy coolchamber (ZECC) extend the shelf life of stored fruits and vegetables. There is a lack of study conducted in Indonesia about the use of ZECC to keep mangos after harvesting though. The present study, therefore, was aimed to understand the quality and storability of stored mangos in ZECC. Three different storage containers, a ZECC, ambient, and refrigerator with different average RH and temperature, were used to place selected ripe mangos (Mangifera indica L) that were manually harvested from farmers’ field nearby. The ZECC was set up at the residential complex for lecturer of Hasanuddin University as the experiment site. Results showed that mangos inside ZECC were acceptable until eleven days of storage after considering both quality and sensory evaluation. The result suggests that ZECC can maintain mango’s quality and extend its shelf life, which reveals that ZECC seems promisingfor commercial applicatio

    The Cancellation of Environmental License of PT. Semen Indonesia: A Strategic Environmental Assessment

    Debate over the construction of a cement factory in Rembang Regency between the community groups of Kendeng mountain care is in relation with the issuance of the environmental license No. 660.1/17 of 2012 by the Governor of Central Java. It had been declared null and void by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia based on the decision in the case register No. 99 PK/TUN/2016. The reason for the submission of the cancelation to the Environmental License of PT. Semen Indonesia in Rembang Regency, the community who cares about Kendeng mountains was because the process of submitting the mining licenses for the cement plant was not open and transparent to the community and it was feared that there would be environmental damages to the CAT area (Watuputih basin). In other words, to get the benefits, they are obliged to stay away from potential damage. Then, the urgency in the Strategic Environmental Assessment is as the Government instrument used as an instrument of prevention from pollution and/or environmental damage, and it becomes the basis for the policy of development plans and/or programs within a territory. Therefore, the mining of the cement factory of PT. Semen Indonesia in Kendeng mountains of Rembang Regency is in the CAT area (groundwater basin) based on findings of the Strategic Environmental Assessment Team. It is a protected area so that it potentially causes damage and the mining process must be stopped

    Fountain of Hasanuddin University Campus in Gowa as a Focal Point and a Thermal Control

    In architectural designs, ponds and the like generally have a primary function other than as an aesthetic element, it also becomes the thermal controller of the surrounding environment. Hasanuddin University Campus in Gowa has a fountain pool located at the front entrance of Library Building and Center of Technology (CoT) Building. In fact, the existence of this fountain pond is relatively not become the attraction for people who pass around the pool area. Physically the function as a thermal controller is also not felt by those around them. This study finds out why the design of fountain ponds did not work as a focal point of the visual design composition? Why does not the fountain pool serve as a thermal controller from the surrounding environment? What should be done so that the expected fountain pool function as a focal point and as a thermal controller can be achieved? The results show that the existence of a fountain does not succeed to be a campus focal point because the visual design composition ignores the site requirements and visual elements that influence people to direct the view toward the fountain

    The Optimization of Microbus-Based Public Transportation Facilities in Jayapura City

    Public transport services will work well if there is a balance between supply and demand. The research aimed to analyze the performance and the needs for the number of public transportation facilities based on the microbuses in Jayapura City. The types of the public transports, which would be discussed, were the microbuses which operated in 12 routes of the total routes of 26 in Jayapura city; those were B1, B2, B3, B4, J1, J2, K, I1, E, G, IA and I. The analyses of the performance and the demand for number of public transports were analyzed based on the load factor and the break event in accordance with the value of the vehicles operating costs (BOK) in setting tariffs. The research results indicated that the standard performance value of the public transport route code of K, I1, G, IA were categorized as less, while the routes of B1, B2, B3, B4, J1, J2, E and IB were categorized as medium. The microbuses demand was only 50% of the total microbuses now operating in Jayapura city

    MAPPING AND EXPLORING INFORMAL NETWORK IN ORGANIZATIONAL AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

    Work often happens through informal interactions and relationships. Formal networks and vertical channels no longer enough for the organizational and community capacity to adapt to the rapid social changes and disruptions. Just as the network knowledge is an asset for any organization in the disruptive era, understanding people’s connections and network’s approach is critically important in the cultural transformation of the leadership in the community and organization. The purpose of this article is to review and investigate how Social Network Analysis (SNA) could visualize and analyze the informal networks in organizational and community leadership’s studies. This study introduces a model that combines organizational leadership and community leadership as a social relations category in a micro- sociological perspective. By applying social network approach to evaluating leadership network, the organization or community can more efficiently scale and accelerate their development as well as solves their leadership problems. This method is useful for those who are seeking to influence policy, disseminate new ideas, and mobilize resources towards a common or a specific goal. SNA provides a set of theories, tools, and processes for understanding the relationships and structures of a network. SNA will determine the particular measures, from simple to complex rules, which need to be applied to derive insights from the network and how the network system is structured and evolved with time. The results of this review could help leaders to diagnose, measure, and evaluate their informal network structures and dynamics which are connected through shared interests, work, experiences, and collaborations.Â

    HOUSEHOLD COPING STRATEGIES IN NATURAL COASTAL RISK AND DISASTER IN PAG-ASA, SAN JOSE, OCCIDENTAL MINDORO

    The study was conducted to determine the profile of the household heads; the level of household coping strategies in natural risk and disaster, and the relationship between profile and the household coping strategies.It used correlational method of research. Sixty-three household heads in barangay Pag-asa, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro served as the respondents of the study. Mean, frequency, and Pearson Moment Correlation were used in the study. Results revealed that majority of the respondents were middle aged, with formal education, medium size household, long length of residency with an average monthly income below the poverty threshold of the province. It was also found out that coastal household “moderately adopted†the different coping mechanisms in natural disasters and that household size and number of years spent in formal education has significant relationship with the coping mechanisms

    Rural households’ land subcontracting is analyzed in this paper based on the survey of rural migrant workers from Guangdong and Jiangsu, finding that the labor migration mode of “migrant couples going out to work together†(men workers and women workers) has improved the lagging non - agricultural employment of rural women to a certain extent. Non - agricultural employment of men does not necessarily lead to the transfer of land that achieves an increase with the increase of non - agricultural employment of married women. As a result, the original family division (“men to work while women to farmâ€) is evolved into the intergenerational division (“men and women to work while the elderly to farmâ€). The agricultural labor supply from the elderly is an important factor influencing rural households’ concurrent business, while the lack of strong labor will become an important reason for the transfer of land. The agricultural feminization and rural households’ concurrent business will decline with an increase in non-agricultural employment of married women. The differentiation of rural households and the development of rural land-transfer market will be further promoted due to the improvement of non-agricultural employment of married women

    ABSTRACT Manufacturing companies in Indonesia are increasing in number in recent years. Large growth should be balanced with good working capital management due to the manufacturing company is carrying out buying of raw material activity, afterward convert them into semi-finished goods and finished goods. Cycles from purchasing goods, inventory management, debt repayment, product sales, cash received will have effect on profitability.Purpose of this study to determine whether working capital management affect profitability of manufacturing companies publicly listed on Indonesian Stock Exchange from 2010-2015. This study uses quantitative method by using linear regression analysis tool on panel data.Results of this study found that the component of working capital proved to affect profitability of manufacturing companies Listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange. Therefore the companies should be able to manage properly their working capital. Manufacturing companies should improve their management pattern applied to their current assets and current liabilities. Working capital management should be performed by shortening cash conversion cycle, debt withholding, and by increasing current assets value due to it proves to be able to improve profitability of the company
