Study about eco-innovation in Indonesia still very rare due to regulation that relatively new in governance of the firm. This paper elaborates the correlation between proxy of eco-innovation and financial firm performance. Eco-innovation is a term that refers to innovation activities conducted by the firm with ecological perspective based. Deductive methodology is being used to confirmatory the correlation between variables. This research examines the influence of firm financial performance towards eco-innovation. In particular, this research discusses firm financial performance which proxies by Return on Asset (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and Earning Retention Ratio (ERR) that could affects firms on making a decision about Eco-Innovation. This research used 155 firm years observation that consist of 31 consumer goods companies listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange during the period 2011-2015. From the total observation showed that 75 firm years perform Eco-Innovation and 80 firm years did not perform Eco-Innovation. The test is conducted by using logit regression model. The results of this study are ROA has a significant and negative impact toward Eco-Innovation, ROE has a significant positive impact on Eco-Innovation, and ERR has no significant impact on Eco-Innovation

Preserving the Environment within the ASEAN Skies: Lessons from the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme

    Get PDF
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change also known as the Kyoto Protocol has set up a framework to reduce carbon emission. The environmental issue is also being addressed at the international aviation sector through the International Civil Aviation Organization’s resolutions. As an international organization sui generis, the European Union (EU) has decided to take up a further step with the enactment of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. The latter has obliged both EU and non-EU airlines to comply with its ambitious goal controlling aviation emissions. However, the legal framework had triggered international objections from legal perspective due to infringement towards the Chicago Convention of 1944 and the international customary law principles. Considering of the nature of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) as an international organization without a supranational law order; as well as recent developments in regards to legal framework on emissions, the future of ASEAN skies from an environmental perspective seems uncertain. However, if ASEAN Emissions Trading Scheme shall take place, they should learn from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme past mistakes and the International Civil Aviation Organization resolutions to prevent non-discrimination towards non-ASEAN member states’ airlines from happening

    Get PDF
As a global principal, corporations have the obligation to comply with national and international hard law of human rights, respect soft laws and global standards. The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (GPs) of 2011 were unanimously endorsed by the Human Rights Council and are respected as a global standard that stipulates that corporations should respect human rights when conducting their business activities. The purpose of this paper is to examine the scope and focus of National Action Plans (NAPs) by comparing the Netherlands NAP on Human Rights (2013) is compared to the UK’s updated NAP of 2016 with the aim of providing ideas and good examples of a NAP for Indonesia. This study used normative legal method. It is considered to be a valuable lesson both for developed and developing countries that for practical matters it is highly important to create and implement a NAP for the implementation of the GPs. Fortunately, Indonesia in June 2017 has launched a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP). The burden responsibility to carry out the NAP on Business and Human Rights to corporation to be implemented strongly rests on the government authorities both central government and all levels authorities, including the local level, have the duty to implement human rights obligation, including to convince corporations that upholding the GPs will ultimately be to their benefit

    Get PDF
The realization of the principle of justice in proving the settlement of consumer disputes through arbitration in Indonesia is equally important. Undeniable, there is a weakness of the consumer protection law, both substantial norms and formal law. This article is normative legal research that refers to norms and legal principles in the legislation or court decisions. The results show that the proof is one of the trials that plays an important role. In general, the verification system is distinguished based on civil law and common law understandings influenced by various proof system theories such as the presumption of liability principle adopted in the Indonesian consumer protection law. The principle of justice in the consumer arbitration system is different from the arbitration verification system that is universally applicable in Indonesia. The ultimate goal of choosing consumer arbitration is to get substantial justice that is more dignified and not just obtaining formal justice.Â

Modified Yield-Line Theory for Prestressed Concrete Deck Slabs with Interface between Old and New Deck Slabs

    Get PDF
In a technique for widening prestressed concrete (PC) deck slabs proposed by some researchers in Japan, the shear transfer between the old and new deck slabs is achieved through the external prestressing force, and the rebars extending from the old to the new deck slab. To simulate this condition in the experimental test, three PC deck slabs under a concentrated load were tested by taking the initial prestressing level as the parameter. Observations suggest that the capacity of the widening PC deck slabs was difficult to predict due to the current analysis technique does not consider the presence of the interface between the old and new deck slab. Therefore, the conventional yield-line theory, as one of methods for calculating the flexural capacity, was modified in this study. The results indicated that the modified yield-line theory showed better accuracy compared to the conventional yield theory for lower initial prestressing level. However, for higher initial prestressing level, both conventional and modified yield line theory highly overestimated the experiment

SOCIOECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF EMIGRATION IN THE EARLY STAGE OF MODERNIZATION: PATH ANALYSIS BASED ON THE VILLAGE DATA IN JAPAN

    Get PDF
International mobility of human beings is an important social phenomenon that demonstrates the degree of dynamism of a society. However, unlike many of European countries, Japanese emigrants to Hawaii, North America, South America and other Asian regions during the modernizing stage from the Meiji era to World War II were estimated as about one million at most; it might be said that the emigrants were exceptional as an illustration of labor force mobility. One characteristic fact of Japanese emigration is that home villages of emigrants are distributed very unevenly geographically. The paper deals with this geo- graphically skewed distribution of villages inducing emigrants, clarifying what conditions of socioeconomic factors affect the emigration at the village level in the early stage of Japanese modernization. For the analysis, the dimensionality test by component factor analysis and path analysis are introduced, based on the secondary data which was published by the government in 1880 (Meiji 13) and then. The analysis clarifies that no single factor but several factors simultaneously affect the emigration at the village level, constructing the complex structure formed by three basic components: natural environment, accessibility of external resources and. socioeconomic characteristics.Â

The determinants of food securityamong farming households in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria is the main focus of this study. It specifically described the socioeconomiccharacteristics of the farming households, analyzed the food security situation of the respondents and estimated the determinants of food security among the households in the study area. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 109farming householdswho were selected by a three stage random sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Food security index, FGT and Binary Logit regression model. Findings of the study showed a young vibrant farming population, relatively literate and engaged in small scale farming. The outcome of the study also indicated that majority (80percent) of the respondents were food insecure consuming less than the recommended daily calories intake of 2260kcal. Food secure households in the study area exceeded the calorie requirement by 69% while the food insecure households fell short of the recommended calorie intake by 37%.The result of the Logit regression revealed that education, household size, farm size and total household income were the statistically significant variables affecting the food security of the farming households in the study area. These coefficients have values of1.490, - 0.021, 0.264 and 0.000 respectively. It was recommended that Government should provide an integrated approach that promotes formal education among farming households to enhance their farm production activities. There is also a need to promote large scale farming in the area. It was further recommended that enlightenment programmes on nutrition and birth control measure should be directed at the farming households in the study area. This will help to check the consumption of unbalanced diets and uncontrolled child births respectively

The study was carried out at the Agriculture research field of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) from March to October, 2017 to explore rooting performance of Aegle marmelos (Bael) through clonal propagation by stem cutting under 3 different doses of IBA (Indole Buetaric Acid) and planted in the perforated plastic tray filled with coarse sand and gravel placed in the non-mist propagator. The experiment was laid out following a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 treatments and 4 replications (blocks). The treatments were T0= control, T1 = 0.2% IBA, T2 = 0.4% IBA, T3 = 0.8% IBA. The rooting ability of cuttings was significantly influenced by the application of IBA. The highest rooting percentage (60%) was recorded in A. marmelos both with 0.2% and 0.4% IBA followed by 0.8% IBA (40%). Longest root (3 cm) was recorded with 0.4% IBA followed by 0.2% IBA (1.2 cm). The maximum root number (2.25) and root diameter (2 mm) obtained from cuttings treated with 0.8% IBA followed by 0.4% IBA (2 and 1.9 mm respectively). Survival percentage of the cutlings (the rooted cuttings) significantly enhanced by exogenous rooting hormone (IBA) application. The highest survival percentage (73.5%) was observed for the cuttings treated with 0.4% IBA followed by 0.8% IBA (68.5%). Findings of the present study reveal that the plant species is highly amenable for clonal propagation by stem cuttings using low-cost non-mist propagator. Considering rooting percentage, root number and and root length, 0.4% IBA treatment may be recommended for mass production of quality planting stocks. Farmers and nursery owners can be trained up regarding this low cost non-mist propagation system of Aegle marmelos for cultivation of the species in homestead agroforestry or in fruit orchards for sustainable nutritional and medicinal supply for the poor people of agrarian Bangladesh

Even though there is high need of the excise revenue from a cigarette, but the government of Indonesia needs to take into account the long run effect of cigarette to the people. There are poverty, health and education issues relating to the cigarette consumption. Therefore, the government intervention can help people to curb the cigarette consumption. This study attempts to find the impact of the government policy through the excise tariff policy, and the rationality of the smoker to the cigarette consumption in Indonesia. This study recommends the government intervention in order to control the cigarette consumptions in Indonesia by pushing the cigarette price and making cigarette less affordable for less rationale smoker (the young and poor people). Secondly, the government can take an action in delimiting the access of cigarette advertising and educate people about the danger of cigarette to the people
