Kendari Bay is experiencing the degradation of environmental condition. In order to restore thecoastal area environment, reclamation policies have been implemented in the area. This study aims to analyzethe sustainability status of the Kendari Bay reclamation areas and to propose development strategies in orderto improve the sustainability status of the Kendari Bay reclamation areas. Assessment of sustainability statusin Kendari Bay Reclamation areas was carried out using the Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries (RAPFISH) methodbased on 4 dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, economic and legal and institutional with 20assessments attributes. The result revealed that 3 out of 4 dimensions, namely environmental, social, and legaland institutional were categorized as ‘less sustainable’. Whereas, the economic dimension was at ‘fairlysustainable’ status. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis concluded that several alternativestrategies are required to improve the sustainability status of Kendari Bay reclamation areas, with greateremphasis placed on the green economy, followed by the establishment of aspecific agency, and sedimentmanagement. The study findings recommended to apply the concept of integrated coastal management (ICM)as a comprehensive solution to improve the sustainability of the are

LAND GRABBING OR RICE SECTOR DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY? THE CASE OF WANBAO PROJECT IN GAZA, MOZAMBIQUE

    Get PDF
Demand for agricultural land by foreign investors has been increasing in Mozambique over the last years and the Wanbao project is an example. The implementation of this project in Gaza has divided opinions between the government, civil society and academia. This study aims to contribute to the debate on whether Wanbao project can be considered as land grabbing and the extent to which the project contributes to the development of small-scale agriculture in Gaza Province. Data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire in December 2019 and January 2020, covering a total of 66 household affected by the Wanbao project. The data were analyzed by a descriptive statistic and a cross-check of the Mozambican land law, the available literature on land grabbing and the information collected on the ground from the farmers affected by the project. The results show that the land concession to Wanbao was made without any consideration of customary rights, however, it was found that the contract farming program can increase rice productivity in the short term, but its sustainability remains questionable. Thus, if the Mozambican government intends to transform agriculture through large investments, it must ensure that the concession of land respects customary rights and the companies involved ensure the transfer of technologies in an effective and sustainable manner

CAPITAL MARKET INTEGRATION OF ASEAN-5 COUNTRIES : AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
The financial integration of South East Asian markets has been an important research topic. Due to the recent global developments in financial markets, the behaviours of these emerging markets are gaining much interest. This research paper empirically analyzes stock market integration of international portfolio diversification across the South East Asian countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test has been used to verify the static properties of the market return of ASEAN countries. An analysis of the co-integration among these countries' market return has been done using the Johansen Co-integration Approach. The co-movements between the ASEAN economies were analyzed through the Granger Causality test. The results of the Granger causality tests indicate the interdependence between ASEAN-5 market returns. This suggests a co-movement among ASEAN capital markets, but not all of these ASEAN capital markets were fully integrated. This study also found that the Malaysia Stock Exchange, the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the Singapore Stock Exchange and the Philippines Stock Exchange were fully integrated, but Indonesia Stock Exchange was not. Essentially, this study provides insight for policymakers, portfolio managers, domestic and international investors, risk analysts, and financial researchers to diversify their investment portfolios by combining assets from each ASEAN-5 country

Growing temperature due to climate change is one of the biggest threats in the current situation for humankind after Covid-19. Heat exposure is challenging for certain occupations like agriculture because of the combined effect of the external thermal environment and heat generated by inner organs due to heavy muscular work. A potential part of the world population is agriculture, commonly affected by heat-related illness and productivity loss due to heat exposure. We use our review as a springboard to expand the negative influence of heat stress on the agricultural workforce's health. We used CrossRef, PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct databases, and some other reverent websites to revise various research priorities related to heat stress associated with epidemiology, loss of productivity, and some effective prevention measures. We have properly reviewed selected top 35 scientific priorities associated with heat stress-related epidemiological studies on more than 5 million agricultural workers to elaborate the probability of heat-related illness in the farming sector. We divided the examined data into six categories for the effective analysis of chosen studies: author, topic of study, target population sample condition of study heat exposure recognized health issue, specific study outcome, etc. The result of the survey reveals that heat stress-related disorder among farmers is in increasing order. The increasing order of impact of climate change in the form of heat stress in the agricultural sector tremendously influences the agricultural worker's health, productivity, and livelihood. Most of earlier research priorities concluded that heat stress could effectively reduce by low-cost measures, proper work-rest Schedule, hydration, heat stress awareness, and prevention training but needs adequate implementation. Further comparative assessment of physiological parameters of agricultural workers in heat stress conditions of different geographical locations is essential for future research to develop a Policy for sustainable livelihood in the agricultural sector

The Vulnerability of Women in Dealing with Covid-19 Pandemic: Feminist Legal Theory Approach

    Get PDF
Women are one of the community groups most affected by Covid-19 because most are workers with lower incomes and unprotected financial security. Moreover, most women occupy the informal sector, which is more vulnerable in accessing social security guarantees. In addition, domestic violence against women increases in several countries during the pandemic. This article aims to analyze the causes of the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on Women and formulate the legal solution using the Feminist Legal Theory approach. The results show that there are broadly two causes of negative impacts for women dealing with Pandemic Covid-19. Firstly, due to the inequality in economic structure. Secondly is the gender stigmatized social structure. In this case, the feminist legal theory approach can be used to reconstruct and reform the negative impacts, as well as reanalysis the solutions in realizing women's legal justice due to the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic. This study offers three solution methods. Firstly, analyzing the legal methods in giving gender implications and perpetuating women's subordination. Secondly, making gender the main category in conducting legal analysis. Thirdly, considering gender specificity in achieving legal equality for women

Water is the most precious commodity that human being wanted, nowadays water is depleting due to several human interventions. In Kerala state, even though high rainfall is received, still water scarcity is faced during summer and soil erosion is higher. This watershed area is prone to water scarcity during the summer season and stream network become dry during that period. This clearly indicates that human interventions and unscientific agricultural activities may be the result. In this, study GIS and RS technologies are used to find and map the Soil and water conservation priority zones, also several action Plans where proposed. SOI Topo sheet were used to digitize the contours and DEM was created using that with ArcGIS 10.2.2 software. LULC maps were digitized from satellite image and using other parameters and suitable weight values, the weighted overlay was done to find out the Priority Zones. Cadastral Plot boundaries were overlaid for plot-wise priority zones and several conservation methods like gully plugin, check dams, vegetation bund etc. were proposed
