A Contrastive Study of Topic Shifting in Chinese and Japanese Conversation -Focusing on Topic Closing Process-
This paper presents a comparison between the conversations of Chinese and Japanese native speakers (CNS and JNS) in their respective native languages. Previous studies on learners of the Japanese language (JSL/JFL) claim that their topic shifts may be too abrupt and troublesome for JNS. In order to pin down the problem for CNS topic shifts in Japanese contact situations, it seems necessary to consider not only the language proficiency but also the influences of the norms in the speaker' s native language, i.e. Chinese. In addition, although a topic shift is a dynamic process, most of the studies have focused on the linguistic expressions that appear in topic shifts. The present research examines the processes of topic closing observed in CNS and JNS conversations with a focus on the interaction between participants. The data consist of 20minute, audio-and video-taped dyadic conversations had by 11 CNS and 11 JNS pairs.
The results show that both CNS and JNS demonstrate 3 patterns of topic closing: the patterns include (i) collaborative closing, (ii) unilateral closing, (iii) sudden (without premonition) closing. A significant difference between CNS and JNS was found in the distribution of these patterns. In CNS conversation, the distribution of (i)-(iii) is 41%, 21% and 38% respectively. In JNS conversation, the distribution is 92%, 7% and 1%, respectively. That is, in CNS show little preference for a particular topic shift pattern, while JNS show an overwhelming preference for collaborative closing. In JNS conversation, the predominant and thus most common topic shifts are collaborative.
Through an analysis of the processes of topic closing, this paper suggests where the difference between CNS and JNS concerning topic shifts lies and provides a basis for further research on problems seen in JNS-CNS contact situations.3KJ00004597797journal articl
Designing a Learning Environment: Teacher Training Course as a Learner Community
The paper reports and examines the design of a learning environment for a participatory Japanese teacher training course. The course aims to develop teachers with the ability to achieve Japanese language teaching underpinned by sociocultural theory. The design of the learning environment ensures the establishment of a learning community wherein learners are assisted by various resources, and, through participation in class, develop new understanding and develop learner autonomy. This paper first discusses sociocultural theory and learner autonomy, then describes the design of the learning environment. Then, employing the concept that learning is actualized through changes in the community in which it occurs, this paper analyses the learning environment in terms of subject, resources and artifact, objects, regulations, community and role distributions, as defined within the sociocultural theory. Finally this paper reports the outcome and expresses the author's hope that the participating teacher trainees will practice delivery of participatory teaching underpinned by sociocultural theory.10KJ00004597869journal articl
Examining the "Self-Evaluation Support System" in Japanese-Language Program for Researchers and Post-Graduate Students: The Recognition Gap between Students and Teachers
The Japanese-Language program for researchers and post-graduate students implemented by the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai, has introduced a “self-evaluation support system ”in order to support students in managing language learning and research activities through the self-evaluation cycle of setting the goal, monitoring the process, and adjusting the goal as needed. This paper attempts to examine this system through interviews with students and reflection by teachers.
The results show that the most students found that the system was effective for both language learning and research activity. During the program, students sometimes felt uncomfortable with the system, and some received messages that teachers did not intend through the procedure of the system. In one case, however, a student became to realize the positive aspect of the system by interacting with the surroundings, as well as with the teacher who changed her role.
To realize a self-directed learning environment, teachers should be careful about the method and timing of supporting students, and should know that the teacher is a part of the learning resource and it is possible to change through interaction with students.10KJ00004595628実践報告Practice Reportdepartmental bulletin pape
A Survey about the Language-Learning Beliefs among University Students in Sri Lanka: Considerations on Improvements for Japanese-Language Education
This paper reports the results of a survey about language-learning beliefs among university students in Sri Lanka. The BALLI inventory was used for this survey and the items were from nine categories: 1) foreign language aptitude; 2) the difficulty of language learning; 3) the nature of language learning; 4) learning and communication strategies; 5) motivations; 6) the role of the teacher; 7) the teaching methods and classroom activities; 8) the medium language; 9) the relations between language learning and culture. The result shows that Sri Lankan learners need teaching methods, classroom activities, and syllabuses focused on communication. Also, they are dependent on their teachers and trust the teachers’way of teaching. In addition, based on the results, this paper considers how Japanese-language education in Sri Lanka might be improved from the viewpoint of learners’beliefs.2KJ00004594787研究ノートResearch Paperdepartmental bulletin pape
Cooperation on the Teacher-Training Programs Overseas and in Japan
This paper is a report on the training program for Indonesian teachers of the Japanese language. The visiting program was designed to teach the language and culture to secondary-school teachers who have never visited Japan and have less confidence in their language skills.
One hundred teachers are, in cooperation with Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, being invited over the next 5 years.
The qualified participants are given a 2-week-long preparatory program in Jakarta prior to their visit. They are selected from among those who have taken the Ministry-sponsored training program.
This paper outlines the consecutive course design and its procedures, and shows a close collaboration between overseas teacher education and that in Japan.
It evaluates trainees’ satisfactions well as their comprehension and achievement on learning goals at the very end of the program.
It would appear to be necessary to further examine how what they have learned leads to behavior change and class development.11KJ00004595650実践報告Practice Reportdepartmental bulletin pape
