Figurative transition of the meanings of natural scientific terms : A case of Chinese words in Dutch learning (rangaku)
The present study gives a new framework for investigating the figurative transition of meanings of natural scientific terms and shows some applications to the Chinese words in Dutch leaning (rangaku) in the mid 18th to 19th century.
First, outlines of a framework for examining the transition of word meanings were introduced and several issues were addressed: the word's origin and usages in Chinese classic literature and/or Dutch learning studies, figurative transition of the meaning and its instances, the status of present use and so forth. Second, this framework was applied to a Chinese word in natural science: kussetsu (refraction), which was derived from Chinese literature. Third, the other cases, nensho (combustion) and masatsu (friction), where the words were invented by Japanese researchers for translating Dutch words were briefly discussed.6論
