Ghost sign for Marston's and an Off-Licence. This sign was painted over a different Marston's sign which is still visible at the top of the new sign. A third layer of the Marston's sign is now visible. The Crown Pub is located down the street and may be related to this sign. Founded in 1834 by John Marston, Marston's established the Horninglow Brewery in Burton upon Trent. In 1861, the brewery produced 3,000 barrels a year, but by 1898, the brewery produced 100,000 barrels a year. The company experienced several mergers, name changes and acquisitions, the biggest of which occurred in 2020 when Carlsberg UK and Marston's merged to form Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC). Not only does Marston's function as a brewery, but the company also operates over 1,350 pubs and bars across England and Wales as of 2024

Ghost sign for a family grocer on Cherry Street in South Wigston, 2024.

    No full text
Ghost sign reading: 'Family Grocer / Provisions / Greengrocer'. The phone number along with the word 'Leicester' is written below. A second layer is visible beneath this sign, reading: 'Deliveries in all Districts'. Deterioration of the sign since 2005 has revealed the names of 'Ind Coope' and 'Allsopp' written in red ovals. This indicates that the grocery may have been an off licence or beer retailer before a grocer. Starting with the Star Inn in Essex in 1708, Ind Coope went through several ownership changes from Ind and Smith in 1816 to Octavius and George Coope joining Edward Ind to become Ind, Coope & Co. in 1845 to the merging with Allsopp and Sons to become Ind Coope and Allsopp. By 1959, Allsopp was dropped from the title. In 1961, Ind Coope merged with Ansells and Tetley Walker to form Allied Breweries, and in 1992, Carlsberg UK merged with Allied Breweries to become Carlsberg-Tetley. Ind Coope acquired several breweries during their time and brewed a number of successful beers, such as Long Life or Double Diamond. In 1807, Samuel Allsopp bought the Wilson brewery in Burton upon Trent, and by 1861, Allsopps was the second largest brewery after Bass & Co. After acquiring several other breweries, 1934 saw Allsopp & Sons merge with the Ind Coope company to become Ind Coope and Allsopp. In 1959, the company dropped the Allsopp name before incorporating with Allied Breweries in 1961
