Ghost sign for 'Allard's Store' on Highfield Street, 2024.
Ghost sign for 'Allard's St(ore)', reading 'Groceries, Prov(isions)... / Wines & Spi(rits)... / Finest Quality Lo... Pr...'. The letters in parentheses are presumptive based on context. Unfortunately, part of the sign was covered over, so the full content is obscured. According to Kelly's Directory from 1904, 1922, 1932, 1941 and 1954, 3 Highfield Street listed variations of Allard's Stores as grocers and Hartopp Ltd. as wine and spirit merchants. Hartopp Ltd. likely refers to the wine and spirits advertised as a part of Allard's Store as they were located at the same location. The 1904, 1922 and 1954 directories spell Allards with two 'L's but the 1932 and 1941 directories only use one 'L'. In 1922, Edward Allard & Co. are listed as the comany name while all other directories use 'Allards Stores'
