Ghost sign for which has been painted over before 2009, making the sign difficult to read. The sign likely reads: 'Strettons (Ale)s / (Allso)pp ...tle'. The letters in parentheses are presumptive based on context. On the same building but facing Storer Street, there is a secondary ghost sign for Ind Coope & Allsopp and an unknown, painted over, ghost sign which are available to view in our collection.
Starting with the Star Inn in Essex in 1708, Ind Coope went through several ownership changes from Ind and Smith in 1816 to Octavius and George Coope joining Edward Ind to become Ind, Coope & Co. in 1845 to the merging with Allsopp and Sons to become Ind Coope and Allsopp. By 1959, Allsopp was dropped from the title. In 1961, Ind Coope merged with Ansells and Tetley Walker to form Allied Breweries, and in 1992, Carlsberg UK merged with Allied Breweries to become Carlsberg-Tetley. Ind Coope acquired several breweries during their time and brewed a number of successful beers, such as Long Life or Double Diamond.
Stretton's Derby Brewery Ltd. was founded before 1868 but was acquired then by the Stretton brothers. The company acquired a number of other breweries, including Derby Brewery Co. Ltd., Midland Brewery Co. Ltd. and Alton & Co. Ltd. However, in 1927, Stretton's was acquired by Allsopp & Sons Ltd. with 143 public houses only to be closed in 1929 and sold to Burrow, Sturgess & Severn, mineral water manufacturers

Ghost sign for Tennant Brothers Ltd. This sign reads 'Tennants / Gold Label / Sparkling / Barley Wine'. Their Exchange Brewery was established in 1820 before being purchased by Edward and Robert Tennant in 1840. The company became Tennant Brothers Ltd. in 1882. In 1964, Whitbread & Co. (or Whitbread East Pennines) acquired the company until 1993 when the brewery was closed. The Gold Label was first brewed in 1951 and originally contained 10.6% alcohol by volume, making it the strongest regularly brewed, nationally distributed beer in Britain.
The sign was repainted in the late 1980s/early 1990s as part of the Livingstone Street Brick Cleaning Scheme, which explains its excellent condition

Ghost sign for 'Burton(s) / Everards / Ales' on the end of a former pub, the Roebuck Inn. The sign was revealed sometime after July 2011. The Desford Heritage website records the history of the pub from the first licensee, Benjamin Foulds, in 1825 through many others to the last recorded landlord Mrs EH Jarvis from 1965-69

Ghost sign for Ind Coope, reading 'Always Order Ind Coope'. This sign is located on the same wall as a ghost sign for Bass & Co. and on the same building as a 'Double Diamond' ad facing Glossop Street. Each of these signs is visible in our collection.

Founded in 1834 by John Marston, Marston's established the Horninglow Brewery in Burton upon Trent. In 1861, the brewery produced 3,000 barrels a year, but by 1898, the brewery produced 100,000 barrels a year. The company experienced several mergers, name changes and acquisitions, the biggest of which occurred in 2020 when Carlsberg UK and Marston's merged to form Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC). Not only does Marston's function as a brewery, but the company also operates over 1,350 pubs and bars across England and Wales as of 2024

Formed in 1927, Parmeko began under the name Partridge and Mee before becoming Parmeko in 1935. As a leading manufacturer of electromagnetic devices, including transformers and chokes, Parmeko received a 1944 patent for the design of a loudspeaker. In 1956, Parmeko acquired by Sears Holdings to expand their business, manufacturing electrical engineers, transductors, magnetic amplifiers, electronic control gear, electronic equipment and sound reproducing equipment. The company dissolved in 2021
