Ghost sign for 'Fine Ales' from Bass & Co. advertising 'Fine Ales and Stout, India Pale Ale, Light Dinner, Bass's Guinness's & Strong Ale in halfpint bottles'. Before 2003, a window was added to the building obscuring the top right corner of the advertisement. Between 2015 and 2017, a second window was added to the building, obscuring the bottom right corner. This sign is located on the same wall as a ghost sign for Ind Coope and on the same building as a 'Double Diamond' ad facing Glossop Street. Each of these signs is visible in our collection. Bass & Co. began in 1777 and eventually became one of the largest brewers in the UK before being bought by Coors in 2001

Ghost sign for Salmon & Welch. The sign is extremely deteriorated and difficult to read, but the letters '...almon &... Ho...' can be read. The smudgy look of the sign may indicate that the sign was repainted at some point in the past. Before 2003, a building extension was added, partially obscuring the sign from view. This is one of, potentially, two ghost signs for Salmon & Welch in our collection

Ghost sign for Ind Coope & Allsopp. This sign displays the company name with the signature hand logo in the centre. Above this sign is the word 'Strettons' and below 'Off Licence'. To the left of this sign, there is another ghost sign but, it was painted over at some point before 2009. On the same building but facing George Street, there is a secondary ghost sign for Strettons and Allsopp which is available to view in our collection. Starting with the Star Inn in Essex in 1708, Ind Coope went through several ownership changes from Ind and Smith in 1816 to Octavius and George Coope joining Edward Ind to become Ind, Coope & Co. in 1845 to the merging with Allsopp and Sons to become Ind Coope and Allsopp. By 1959, Allsopp was dropped from the title. In 1961, Ind Coope merged with Ansells and Tetley Walker to form Allied Breweries, and in 1992, Carlsberg UK merged with Allied Breweries to become Carlsberg-Tetley. Ind Coope acquired several breweries during their time and brewed a number of successful beers, such as Long Life or Double Diamond. Stretton's Derby Brewery Ltd. was founded before 1868 but was acquired then by the Stretton brothers. The company acquired a number of other breweries, including Derby Brewery Co. Ltd., Midland Brewery Co. Ltd. and Alton & Co. Ltd. However, in 1927, Stretton's was acquired by Allsopp & Sons Ltd. with 143 public houses only to be closed in 1929 and sold to Burrow, Sturgess & Severn, mineral water manufacturers
